Just got my gears from a member here for my 8.8 and D30.

http://www.gator4x4.com/usr_img2/Gearcomparo.jpg

Left is the 3.27 gearset the 8.8 came with.. check out how huge the pinion is :shock:

Middle is the 4.56 8.8 gear set. Notice how much thicker the ring gear is.

Right is D30, 4.56 ring and pinion. Tiny.

No major tech here, just figured I'd show a comparison for anybody who was considering the swap in the future. I believe the D35 ring and pinion is actually SMALLER than the D30 is it not? If that's the case, this pic is all the info you need to determine why it's so weak ;)

D35 R&P is a little bit bigger.. 7.62 vs 7.20 IIRC

Oh yes, in the near future it's a definite possibility!

Alright...don't make me break out the pic of my D30 ring gear sitting completely inside my 14b ring gear. :D

And we all know you're not really cool enough to drink Guinness and that you just put that bottle there for this pic....look, it's still full too! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

Dammit...if only i were old enough to buy beer! :mrgreen:

btw....sams club is the best place to buy guinness...it's WAY cheaper there than any of the liquor stores or grocery stores have it for.

NOW...back to this TECH discussion about ring gear sizes...

info from the top of my lame head (info could be incorrect, so this is not to be used for any real purpose other than general knowledge and comparison)...but i'm 99% sure it's correct:

Ring gear diameters:
D30 = 7.125"
D35 = 7.56"
D44/10 bolt = 8.5"
12 bolt = 8.875"
Ford 8.8 = 8.8"
Ford 9" = duh... 9"
D60 = 9.75"
14 bolt (big version) = 10.5"
D70 = 10.54"

now if only i could memorize something useful. :roll:

I know, isn't that some shit? I can sit around and look at Jeep parts all damn day, memorizing all sorts of stuff that's irrelevant to my everyday life, but I can't force myself to study a fraction of the time I spend looking at Jeep parts.
