well its time for regearing but I'm having second thoughts. A guy in my local 4x4 club is selling his TJ d30 w/ 4.56 gears and an ARB for $400. Is it worth it to build a LP D30 or should I just suck it up and find a HP30 from an XJ? I know the pinion is like 4" higher and the shafts/joints are a little stronger but other than that what are some advantages?

Good price for what he's selling. But the shafts/joints can be the same between LP and HP.

Moving this too BTW.

For $400 it might be worth it just to get this one bolt it in and call it done.

for $400 it's a deal, do that.

are the carriers the same HP vs LP?
buy it, then later if you want a HP, you'll still have the ARB

I'd grab it... WORST CASE SENARIO you could later on throw that ARB into an HP housing... Hell the ARB alone for 400 is a deal, I'd get on that if I were you.

If I ever get the 44 in I will have a hp30 with arb and dana/spicer 4.56's with everthing on it new including hubs and balljoints. I would like to sell it for around $600 and I am only one state above you Puma.

Also including spare shafts, hubs, steering etc.

consider it sold, that should give me enough time to recoup some $$$ from the 8.8 project. :D

yeah, but are the gear teeth stripped?

neways to answer the questions. in front applications reverse cut gears are stronger than std gears because the drive side uses the stronger side of the gear tooth or something like that

they use the same carrier as a lp
the tube seals are differnt

"shafts/joints are stronger"
what you talking bout? 297x axles came on lp30's and hp30's

btw, what gears will you be installing. with 33-35 i would go with 4.88 at least. i have 4.56 and 33's on the lighter xj and it is kinda not low enough. could go 4.88 easily. turining less than 2.5k @ 60-70 mph

i was under the impression the HP30's all used 760x's from the factory. :?

I will probably keep my plan of 4.56's because of highway driving.

There are a few guys around me that ended up hating their 4.56's on the street with 35's and have since moved to 4.88's.

I will stick with the 4.56's I have since right now I am too cheap to regear both axles, so will just leave the 4.56's in the 8.8 and get the same installed in the HP30

LP and HP are the same strength. One has a better pinion angle than the other. Buy the LP and go break it.

I'll still argue that the HP has a slightly stronger R&P when going forwd, but what's it matter? I've blown up gears and shafts in both..

And just becaues I'm stupid...I'm rebuilding mine AGAIN this winter...
