Any words of wisdom before I collect parts and replace the filter on the tranny?

Get the Mopar gasket you don't need RTV and you can reuse it. Also install a plug on the pan. The filter... the one I have is a reusable metal screen. Just carb clean it out and reinstall. Got all that from John at IPT (importperformancetrans.com) along with my shift kit.

As long as I'm under there, should I install a shift kit?

I would since you will have it apart anyway would not be a bad idea.

But do be sure to install a drain plug. Might even consider adding a bung for a tranny temp sender, even if you don't add a sender right now.

Shift kit is $100. If your not comfortable working with your trannys valve body I wouldn't do it. I got a new VB, electronics and shift kit from John... was $$$ though.
