Nice house.. wish I made that kind of $$$.

Kraqa
01-29-2005, 10:47 PM
BC does get much snow. maybe one snow fall a year. the mountains get tons tho. we just get ALOT of rain.

the house is my parents. it is nice.

and the 38's will be soon forgotten. with the 70 in the rear and a 60 in the plans for the frnt at least 42 will be in the plan.

as for the cage. it will be mostly 1-3/4" .120 wall ERW and i will be using sone squar tubing. for those of you who think i;m retarded for using squar. well i'm very confident that what i'm planning will do just fine. but cage ideas are welcom.

Do you plan on running a rear bench seat? if not, why not cut the "frame" off more towards the front and angle tube upwards toward where you currently have the top bars coming to? hopefully that makes sense. if you're not running a rear bench seat, i think you should have plenty of room for the fuel cell, tools and cooler even with doing it that way and you would have the best departure angle possible, plus i think the lines would look really good.

also, as far as inboarding the springs you will definitely loose a lot of lateral stability when doing so (more body roll). it will help with flex, but in my opinion, stability is the biggest priority, especially on 42's.

also, do you plan on keeping that portion of overhang on the roof. i think it would be interesting to see what you could pull off and still keep it. would definitely help keep the rain out a little better. run the tubes to where the overhang is then bend forward from there.

Just some of my thoughtsand comments. I'm really interested in seeing how this turns out.

keep having fun!!

i am 45* in the floor boards after the drivers doors right into the fram rails. I am not keepingthe rear bench. and i have some ideas on how to use that roof section. i left it long for a reason. today is my moms b-day so nothign more will be done till tonight or tomorrow..

How thick are the frame rails at your cut? I plan on making a U hoop sliding into the frame rails and some reinforcement pieces on the end of the box frame rail. This is how Cody's is done and mine will be similar. Although I plan on tappering mine up to get it out of the rocks. I would have left your c pilar in place.

the frame rails are ~0.700 i measured then with a micrometer. neer the end of the frame byt there the bumer is they are super thin with no reinforcement. if you look at the pic of where my frame is cut right now DC runs a reinforcing plate by there the CA's are suposed to mount. mine will be similar to cody's rear but i'm doing it with 2x4x.125 HSS>

I'm curious to see how you're gonna put square and round tubing together to make your cage. A friend of mine is working on a cage for his Taco and used both, I think its not a bad idea when its inside the cab. Outside may be another story.

Didn't you just finally get that thing in wheelable condition and now you're taking it out of commission again? You'd think you'd at least want to get a season in on the new setup. What made you decide to cut it up?

Oh and you going to run exo or internal on the front half?

Kraqa
01-31-2005, 08:48 PM
hmm front will be exo.

i did just get it to wheel but the body got in the way of the tires and in order to stop that i had to run super long bump stops it would bottom out all the time off road and was terrible. i don't care what you do 38's on a grand will never work RIGHT with out extreme rear fender mods. and if i'm goin gthat far i'm going to buggy it. obviously as you'v seen.

plus i'm not a big fan on snow wheelin. and tyhats all i got right now the mountains are covered in it.

Kraqa - I am really interested in this build, but doing it to fit 38" TSL's just doesn't seem right. I'm running 37"s IROKS which are only 0.9" diameter smaller at 6.5" lift and don't have any issues. That's with 13" travel shocks in the rear w/ ~5"/7" up/down travel and some cushion built in.

Keep the updates coming. this is going to be an interesting thread. this definitely gets the juices flowing in my brain as well.

msvance

definitely looks like good progress, but I have some questions/comments -is your new "frame rail" higher than the old "frame rail"? if not, it seems you could have achieved the same thing by leaving the unibody to that point in tact along with the existing floor and just added tube from there for the cage and structural support. this way you do have a better foundation and you can do it your way, but seems like you would have went for something "different" or "more" if you are going through the hassle.

I guess I visioned that you were going to just continue the tube at that 45* angle to where it basically interesects with the tape that you have layed out on the 1st page. I personally like that idea better, but it's also your buggy and not mine. You gain a little extra room this way i guess, but the way it looks now, you should've had room for the cell just behind the seats then if you continued up at the 45* then you could have built a rack for a cooler and tool box area. I think it would look a little cleaner and more buggish to me anyhow. but i am sure you have plenty of ideas in your head as well.

just my 2c. later.

Kraqa

This frame rail is 2" higher then stock.

My reasons for doing it this way is that the old frame rails were cracked and separated front the floor boards in some locations. They were just a pussy hair over 1/16" thick. and they had a bunch of crazy support brackets welded on to them from the factory that made it look like crap. If you look at how the frame is constructed it is a U shape with two tabs at the top spot-welded to the floorboards. Not very strong. It gets most of its structural values from the rear lift gate and C pillars. i guess i could have re-used it but the point of this project is to use the ZJ platform as a buggy and get rid of allot of the turd aspect of it.

as for the tank it will sit on top of those frame rails. i want to keep it there in order to balance out the weight of having a relatively light rear end with a monsterly heavy front end. The more i look at this im thinking i might wana have the spare go oger the rear since the spare tire is a consistent weight where the fuel tank will get lighter as you go. so puttig the tank behind the seats might not be a bad idea. this is why i'm askign your opinions. thanks man, this board is great.

ever since the x-games wereintroduced the popularity of skate boarding has skyrocketed. look at performers like avril lavine and stuff tones of punk bands are out now. i don't skate i snowboard in the winter and skim board in the summer but the skate deck is for a balance board for the off season and part of my re-hab training from the accident.

as far as the hammer i dont' knwo what your talkign about but LOTS can be done with a mallet and a big sloted screw driver.

why would MT/R's not be a good rock tire? have a fairly decent knobby sidewall, they have good contact area for rocks (like a harder core all terrain), and you can air them down to just about anything without deforming them.

MT/Rs? A fad? Are you kidding?

I do agree that the Iroks haven't been around long enough to gain a solid reputation as a tire of choice. But so far, I'm hearing mostly praise about them. Their only flaws seem to be chunking and quick wear from onroad use. I doubt the kraq-rock will see significant street mileage now that a DD/tow rig has replaced it for the pavement duty.

the cage that happy drew is what i was talking about earlier. i really like the way it looks by following that angle up to where the cage meets instead of making it flat like the existing rails and the way you have it now. you do loose some space, but if you put the cell behind the seats, and mount a tire between the supports that angle down, it looks like you should still have room for a cooler and tools.

anyhow, the progress looks sweet.

Kraqa

i liek the look of that BUt. i see no real reson to have the rear end up so high. maybe i'm missing something but my rear tires extend past my rear "bumper" so departure angle is nothing to worry abotu and this way i have more room for storage. and i have now changed my mid the tank WILL be going behind the seats.

oh ok..You definatley have a good design going by making as much storage space possible..is it goint to be somewhat dovetailed? I guess where u angled the floor behing the front doors is the start of the dovetailing right? thatll be sweet

i so can't wait to see it finished. Its gonna be sweet.

oh yeah how do u plan on keep mud and crap out of the cab? is this thing gonna be street legal?

look at this toyotas rear end....it looks like hes got a vertical standing fuel cell right behind the rear seats then hes got the cooler or storage box at the top end..

I just did that in photoshop with my ZJ:

I left a little more space inside, so you can put stuff like batteries behind the seats, and not outside on the bed. Outside, I think a fuelcell and a spare tire, thats all. (maybe airtank?)

Kraqa - I've seen 1/4 elip work and work very well. The good thing is that ithey make it fairly easy to change ride height and also spring rate by adding/subtracting leafs. This is going to be very interesteing to see how it turns out for ya!

Also, i have some questions about your rockers. how did you have your old ones welded in? just to the parts of the "body/frame" that the tube contacted? this time you added support braces. Did it not work well the way you had it before, did you just want more support or what? Did it require cutting away anything (supports, etc.) to put the tube flush on the underside? Also, it looks like the support braces dig in to the undercarriage a bit. are they actually exposed in to the floorboard? Basically, I'm trying to figure out how i want to do my rockers and the way you have them is about perfect. I think i would like to use 2x4 instead, but pretty much the same idea. however, mine is still full bodied so i need to keep it clean like the rest of the vehicle for now.

thanks.

can't wait to see the 1/4 elip!!

:?: Ok, somebody tell me what 1/4 elliptical is? I haven't heard of it before.

Nordic1
02-11-2005, 03:10 PM
you chop a leaf spring in half, bolt the middle of the spring (where it was chopped) to the body and then bolt the end to some kind of swivel deal to the axle. The neat thing about 1/4 eliptical is you can have truely progressive spring rates. There's a team in jeepspeed that did 1/4 with something like 36 spings... each one being very thin but add them up and every 1/2" of suspension travel allowed for a different spring rate. With 1/4 eliptical, he's still going to have control arms and everything, just not coils.

Kraqa
02-11-2005, 04:39 PM
well generally goingoffroad got the concept. but i'm doing mine a bit difrent.

i'm going to cut the spring in half then bolt it inside a peice of hss tubing and have a heim joint at the other end of the hss. that will be connected to the frame. i will use a sheckle at the axle end. then the hss will have a bump stop on the frame so at rest the spring is "leaning" on the bump stop and carying the weight of the vehicle. but under articulation the srping can pivot down as the axles drops in the same motion as the control arm. essentially i will have unrestricted down travel and a variable spring rate on the up travel. thie only thing i will have to do to make this work right is run a rear swap bar to ballance out the rear end and then limiting straps. shoudl allow for stupid flex that i will mostlikly not use half of . but i can chage the ride hight and articulation as i please.

i didn't get the springs last night i will progress on the cage for now and do the springs at a later date after i'v reaserched it some more.

msvance

my old rockers worked fine i welded them to the body only. although once the body gets a dent above the rockrer HSS the slider will eventually torque its way on a angle and making it the body hit the bottom of the doors. not cool. and yes the a & B pillars must be modified inside the rocker to work correctly if you want to gain anymore clearance then stock.

and i though ti included a pic of how the first support go's through the floor. it would not be the best option for a DD IMHO>

i hope this helps if other pics are required let me know.

Drivers side is easy, you can just remove the bag out of th esteering wheel. I"ve had it out (When checking for problems with the clock spring).

Never messed with the drivers side though. Keep those intact, they're like $400 new, I'm sure you can sell them.

Talking to Tim last year at GSSE his method IIRC was cut one wire at a time and if the Jeep didn't run, reconnect it and go on to the next one. ***This may be an abreviated version of his actual method, it's just what I remember.

Another angle
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Kraq-Rock%20Buggy/100_1305.jpg

This is the final roof cut the main hoop out of the squar tubing will be fully seam welded to it so that i dont have any leaks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Kraq-Rock%20Buggy/100_1312.jpg

Then i got motivated to do the shocks. I'v wanted Triangulated rear shocks ever since i found out how they worked. I got soem cheep very stiff shocks and having them mounted Vertical the rear was Very stiff. now this shoudl sofen it up a bit and allow for some MAD flex if i chose to use all of it.

This is a 5/8" bolt weled to the axle
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Kraq-Rock%20Buggy/100_1306.jpg

Then both shocks in

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Kraq-Rock%20Buggy/100_1308.jpg

Another.

You can see the coiled air line i'm using for a rear dif breather. at rest is is 6" long and full streatch it is 12' so this should be nice with a really flexy rear end i wont have a bunch of breather hoze all over the place.

and the best part is the fact that i can have a tru progressive spring rate and i can adjust the ride hieght at any time. this is what i have to play with if i find that the springs are to soft.

Kraqa

Thoas pillow blocks were 5$ and they are for a standard application nothing special got them from the local farm supply store. i'm going to carry two spares incase one breaks they are suple to change and the price is right.

yes the leafs were 20$ then pillow blocks were a total of 10$

and having somehting that i can completly customize the spring rate and ride hight at my demand for 30$ is far better then going out and finding coils that woudl work.

Thats tight :supz: :supz:

but thats really to complicated. Roll bars are stronger if you can make all of the radius's with one piece of tubeing but still have all the triangles. that cage is only as strong as the weakest weld and would probably have a lot of matainance if it takes a hard roll and you have to replace a bunch of parts, but i've seen a couple of your welds and they look great so i dont think thats much of a problem.

Love it so far and cant wait to see more. I heard you were sick and i hope you get better soon so you can do more because i think we all want to see this thing done. :smt035

the build is looking good.

as far as square ds go, i built the front ds for my cj using farm implement stuff. i found this to be much better (stronger IMO and much less noise). it's basically 1.25" solid stock that slides inside an "adapter" that has a ~2" round OD and 1.25" square ID. the adapter mates to 2" 0.120 wall tube to make up the rest of the shaft that is mated to the yoke. another benefit is the adapter has a zerk fitting used to apply grease to "groves" that lube the square center of the adapter. it's kind of hard to explain, but hopefull the pics help complete the story. i got everything from the local tractor supply store. it makes NO noise at all and I get NO vibes from it at the speeds it sees anyhow (which isn't fast). has all the slip you could ever use and seems plenty strong! just thought i would share.........

adapter/female end

I like the lights. It definatley looks good but I could see you tearing them up on the first trip. As for the square driveshaft... why square? Wouldnt it be harder to balance and if you smash it on a rock one corner take all of the impact instead of like a round ds spreading the impact over the exposed part.

Kraqa
04-05-2005, 12:16 AM
oh those lights will get smashe no doubt about it. but they are cheep and easy to replace. so that make em good. as for the drive shafts. because 2x2x.250 wall i think will be able to habndle the abuse. and i really could care less abotu balancing my DS this will nto be driven on the street.

A friend of mine runs a square driveshaft on his Yota.. it's tough as hell. His isn't 1/4" wall either.

learn from my mistake, if you're going to run a square tube ds, definitely go 1/4" and use 2x2 and 2x2.5. I tried running a little smaller stuff due to space constraints and twisted the ds like it was a pretzel and it wasn't too much smaller either. 325+ hp and getting denied on a vertical wall didn't help either

I went to the design I posted above because it provides the strength, is more compact and is a much more smooth operation and less noise than your normal ds. oh yeah, it provides all the slip you could ever want/need (more important on my leaf sprung CJ of course).

just my input. a 'yota would probably never have that problem, but it's always better to lean on the safe side.....

Kraqa
04-08-2005, 09:50 PM
i think it should be fine. i mean if i was to get a "1 ton" drive shaft made up it would be at least 3" in diam. 2x2 is not that wide. so i think it would bea benefit. and i never plan on balancing it, plus it is cheep.

ok the post you'v all been waiting for

Fist off i never claimed to be a experty at bending nore will i ever become one. so if you do things the way i did it and fuck up alot of tube dont' come bitching. Everything i learned is from bendign 101 on POR.

First of all this is what your going to need to do this right

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Cage/Kraq-RockCage0001.jpg

mark your measurement on the floor with soapstoned like so.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Cage/Kraq-RockCage0002.jpg

then bend up a 90* and mark where the bend starts and stops. also mark where the bend starts on your bending dye.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Cage/Kraq-RockCage0003.jpg

you will be able to tell where the bend starts and stops by feeling the inside of the tube for a small indent.

then use this to mark where the bend starts and stops on you tube from the outline on the floor.

one side of the bend
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Cage/Kraq-RockCage0004.jpg

then the other
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Cage/Kraq-RockCage0005.jpg

measure the total length of tube your going to need frm your outline. then cut it and mark center of the length. from the center out mark your first bend.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Kraqa/Cage/Kraq-RockCage0006.jpg

then insert in the bend and line up the two marks( the one on the tube and then one on the dye) then start bending.

that wasn't detailed btu if you want more tech i'l post the link to the bending 101

so here is what it loosk like.

thnx. i still need ALOT fo bracing and gussets. some nodes and a few X's but the major bending is almost done

chadjans
05-01-2005, 11:50 PM
Just some things I would have suggested:

Your b to c kickers should have come to the same node as your a pilars.
I would have had your a pilars hug the body more.
Run fenders. Looks better. Besides your tires stick out beyond them.
Your windshield bar deserves more bends. Get it closer to the wind shield.

One thing I have been dreaming of is how I am going to one use the stock fuel tank for the fuel cell. I will proably build a basket some how into the new frame rails I am buiding. Secondly I am wondering how I am going to inclose the passenger compartment behind the rear seats. In your case the front seats. You going to run doors? Take them off and make some door bars. Looking good.

Lookin' sweet! Is it just me or is that b-pillar to b-pillar bar behind the front seats a bit too high up? Looks like its about head height...I always thought you wanted that below the shoulders, assuming you are using it to mount shoulder harnesses off of.

the shoulder bar is high i read that if the bar is below your shoulders then in a forad impast it suckes you down to the ground. above your shoulders and you spine stays straight. i will be mounting suspension seats higher up off the floor at a later date. for now i'm useing stock seat belts so that mont matter.

OMG it looks sooo sweet now...way better than before, and yes it is becuz theres no square stuff now. looks alot like a yota flatbed buggy. now just put an x behind the rear seats and maybe cover the bottom end behind the seat with some sheet mettle and the top with plexi glass. also i agree that the front section needs to come closer to the body...and put ur fenders back on just for looks. i think ur idea of do the rear frame the way u did worked out alot better now and looks strong...i wanna do u same main idea but with coilovers.

Move your c piler horizontial up to your fender bars. Make the pink go to your center of the x brace. The red make horizontial from your b to the x. You are not bring things together to nodes. Your x brace should meet at one node with your a pilers and the b to c pilers. Your roof v bars should also be going to the a piler nodes.

THINK NODES AND TRIANGLES ON SUPPORTED SPANS NOT UNSUPPORTED SPANS.

aight well i started the sheet metal today. i need to get that in because the whole floor and the shiny sheet metal will be covered in truck bed liner. then i will paint. so here is the rear wall.

a one inch return lip riveted through the floor will get caulked on the other side and then the whoel thing will be covered in truck bed liner. you can see there the UCA mounts get extra support from the cage.
