my 4.0 just started doing something wierd.... if you let it idle for more than a couple of min it starts to smoke and the exhaust will make your eyes water. It smells like im running carb cleaner through it all the time...it will literally take your breath away and you have to walk away. Also the gas mileage is horrible, like 6 or 8 mpg on the hwy!
Any suggestions?

Also i just did a tune up and that made it run smooth but it still does this.

Not sure about the 4.0 but the Air charge temp sensor on the V8 goes out and makes the computer choke the hell out of the engine.. Which pretty much pumps straight gas thru . When mine went out I was getting about 4 MPG .. Like I said .. I dont know where its at on the 4.0 or if its even a problem but its here on the 5.2

the IAT for the 4.0 is on the drivers side of the intake manifold by the throttle body. the sensor looks the same as the one above

i sort of have the same problem too...mine shoots out alot of black soot out out of the exhaust...the engine is running extremely rich...and shuddering really bad and has no power.

i pulled the spark plugs and plug 2-3 were soaked in gas...and plug 5 looked like it was brand new (running really lean, no gas at all probably getting to the plug)

just wondering if this could be my problem....

IM pulling this back up b/c im currently going to attempt to fix it. Mine will run 'ok', then after a bit, it starts to miss and cough and blow black smoke and make your eyes BURN! This all happens with no check engine light.

I am hoping its the IAT sensor (doesn't make sense to me, but i'll take swamp boy's word for it and go get that sensor. I also bought an o2 sensor thinking it could have burned out since i run an open catalytic converter all the time. We'll c what happens.

Could be bad rings...

Some Rislone Ring Seal will do the trick.

I have my fingers crossed for you...

Hope its not to late but if you have the V8 you can get the IAT for a dodge truck for much cheaper than the Jeep part..

The Dodge truck IAT was $20.99 and the Jeep one was.. $65 Or something like that..

Hope It works..

If it's burning your eyes it is lean, look for an air leak
