View Full Version : You long arm guys, how did you run the rear brake line?

I know I need an extended length line but wanted to know what length some of you guys are using and how you routed it down to the axle.

Thanks.

Flex line frame side, flex line axle side, hard line driver lower control arm.

See it hanging on the LCA there. Now that the rears triangulated, I'm going to run it along the upper and redo the lines so I stop breaking the zip ties that hold the line in place

Thanks guys.

Would there be any harm in mounting the hard line to the control arm permanantly with some clamps or something, not keen on the zip tie route.

Anyone using braided lines at the frame and axle ends?

I think it'd be better on both accounts, the rubber was local at a shop by my house, and the zip ties were there. I did the breaks the day I left for GSW, so I was a little tight on time :)

So Chad,

Does the brake line run through the hole or is that just an attachment point?

I have ordered one of their catalogs also.

Thanks

The shank of the hard line ends threads fit into them.

What braided lines did you use for these?

the line running from the body to the rear is a extended rear yj line. the caliper lines are "street legal 9" straight -3 universal brake lines" the fittings for the rear at the caliper are "10mm banjo -3 straight chrome" (black is the only other color ) fitting from flex line to hard line is a -3 to 24 something i cant remember. they are in the russell cat for like 7 or 8 bucks.

Thanks Speed.

Looking on the Russell site I am a little confused but there is a speed shop just down the street from my office so i think I will just make some measurements at the house and bring in one of the calipers and have them help me order up the right stuff.

i can get you some russell part nos tomorrow at work if you want. i can order everything but the hard to flex line fittings which i could get for you also.

Speed,

If you could work something up for me and give me the big MC discount that would be awesome. Then all I would need to get is the hard line right?

How long is this yj line? If you don't run them off the arm you have to have a super long line from frame to axle, no? And then you have a chance of ripping the brake line apart if the axle artuculates too much. Iw ouldn't use a break line as a limit strap which could happen if you route them that way. I think the advantage to running them down the arms is they travel with the axle. Requiring small flex lines and some super cheap 3/16 hard line. Run them forward along the upper or lower. I run a "skid" on the bottom of the lower arm that the hard line is mounted to, works nicely. And I am using the stock ford 8.8 caliper lines and t box on the housing.

Chad,

I agree I think I would like to run the lines down the top/side of the upper arm to the block on the 8.8 then hard line across the axles then braided lines to the calipers. Doing it that way I think requires a few more flex lines (frame side of arm and axle side of arm) but I think that will also make for a cleaner install.

Run them down the side, you will have floor pan interference with the rear upper arms. I promise. You don't want to kink the line.

Braided lines are a waste of money. Go to a NAPA store that can make you some hydrolic lines out of rubber. Supper cheap and just as good as the braided crap.

I agree with the lines. I have found they pull apart real easy compared to rubber. Rubber ones are around $15-20 a line for most lengths here in Anchorage.

I ran mine down one of my upper 4 link arms. Rubber lines on both ends. Why would you run them on the lower arm vs the upper?

chadjans

stock 8.8 line only alloweed me to travel the upper. The rubber from the tblock was too short.

see that brass T fitting in the pic. We picked that up from the local auto parts store in livermore. The single flex line goes into that and then up to the hardline along the body.

That is what I thought actually just was not sure if you ran a flex line to the body or ran hardline along the control arm or something.

What length flex line are you running there?

Im not sure that was so long ago now  a local shop near the ranch made the SS flex line. Its atleast as long if not longer than RE's line. I'd go out and look, but im up in Ukiah till friday and the heep is at home.

No problem at all. I am NOT in a hurry at all as it will be a few more months til I have all the parts and stuff anyway just trying to make sure I have my eyes open for any deals for sale is all.

I hand machined that Brass fitting...

The rear brake line is like 48" Long for Jim Jeep. Thats about as long as all of his "wheeling" stories.

Its actually like 20"
