Looks great. I recently did something very similar but I just left the clamps on the battery cables for easier on/off. I repainted them so that the red was always + and the black always -.

I was thinking of picking up a welding clamp like yours too as it is a little tough to hold the welding rod in the standard battery clamp.

Don't forget eye protection, I picked up a cheap set of the flip down googles with a #10 glass.

Why would you want them always black and red. Some welding rod calls for reverse polarity and some do not. Colors only confuse the issue. The only wires that are affected are the ends but just an fyi. Secondly the terminal clamps are only hand tight, come off and on easy. I hate the squeeze clamps on bare terminal posts. It chews them up. I am thinking of switching the ground clamp to a true welding ground clamp with less spring and a wider jaw.

The clamp you are refering to is called an electrode holder.

Thanks for clearing me up Chad.

Needless to say I am NOT a welder. The reason I painted a few of the clamps was it was very confusing when we were on the trail and trying to get Chase's Jeep welded up, so I thought if it was a little more straight forward it would make it that much easier.

I was also thinking of getting a welding ground clamp along with the electrode holder, and now that you mention the chewing up of the battery posts I think I will be switching mine out, that is a really good point.

Thanks.

here is a link to my welding kit. It works a little better than what you have put together there. You may want to look into it.. ..

It's not bad at all. I have it setup in my garage with a tank of 75/25 and 2 Blue Tops.

I figure $500 for a trail and shop welder, not too bad. I know an expensive MIG machine would be more versatile, but for the stuff I weld, the Ready Welder works perfect.

I Picked one up used for 260.00. I have seen them new for 400.00. I played around with it and it welds pretty nice. I like the case that comes with it because I coluld fit a couple spools fo wire, gloves and a cheap dremel in it. I put the cheap Lincoln hand help shield that came with my Mig under the rear seat ,

I have seen them on ebay in the $250-300 range and was thinking it might be the way to go as both a trail and home welder.

This is one of the first beads I ran with the Ready Welder. Overhead position. You can see at on the bottom part where it melted the 3/16" It runs HOT compared to a regular MIG!

Aww christ, another freaking forum to keep up with.

Don't sweat getting the nickle - probably useless as a trail fix. Just stock with 6011 and 6013 (lower penetration) and git er done. Nobody said that you have to just carry ONE size rod - get a pound each of 6011 and 6013 in 3/32 and 1/8.

Bob did a great job ... trail leading and welding. If I remember correctly, he wound up welding three of our rigs back together that day ... and still got us all back to the trail head before dark.

Next time, Bob won't have to use the "multiple battery" approach if The Geezer is around. Thanks to the discount certificate I won at the GSW 2004 raffle that Saturday night, The Geezer now has a Premier Power Welder under the hood.

Thanks to a welding course at my local community college, I actually know how to do some basic trail welding. But I certaintly will defer to Bob if he is around to help. I'm definitely not in his welding skill class yet.

Man, this wheelin' is getting to be some serious stuff. :D

You didn't happen to put an ammeter on that, did you? Every SMAW welder I've ever used had a current adjustment, but I never put a voltmeter on them to know what voltage they used. What was the amp rating of the batteries?
