Okay I weld with a mig on all my junk at home. Need to know what welding rod to carry with me for trail battery welded repairs. I was thinking 6011 1/8" but I read posts on Pirate saying they aren't for structure welds and such. So now I am thinking 6013 1/8". What are you guys using? 7013? 6013? 6011? What?

I know it easy enough to carry a few sticks of each but I'd like to know what would be best to carry most of.

Discuss....

lol sorry Family Guy came on and I zoned out... When I toasted my Radius arms in Holister Hills SVRA, I ended up using 3 batteries in series with a 6013 1/8" rod to weld the arms back together. The welds were super strong and held together even through gnarly DW.

I'd say a 3/32" or 1/8" 6011 rod would be the best all-around rod to carry.

It's good for dirty / rusty / painted materials - so its good for the conditions you'd typically expect during a trail repair.

It's also relatively fast-freezing which makes it good for out of position welding.

I don't do a lot of stick welding, but all of the stick welding I've done was with either 6011 or 7018. I personally prefer 7018, but it is designed for big 220V welders. (Had the opportunity to use them when I took a class at my local CC)

The only complaint I have with the 6011 when battery welding is it tends to stick a bit more than I like, but that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I was only using 2 batteries.

I agree with the 6011 3/32 rod. It will work with 2 or 3 batteries. To me one of the bigger issues with stick welding with batteries is the arc is all over the place and as stated the heavy flux on the 6011 will help metal bead stick to the metal easier especially with the dirty conditions of trail welding.
