View Full Version : Replacement trans options for a 46RH

My wife was on her way to CO today to visit her folks and I guess the tranny on the grand started to slip on her as she whent up 285. Aparently she can't get up past 40 without the trans slipping.

Anyway, she made it and she's taking it in for a new filter and fluid and I'm hoping that'll get her home later this week, but I'm considering my options.

The rig has 165k on it and the trans was rebuilt at 125k about 18 months ago. It had a 36k mile, 12 month warranty so I'm hosed.

Anyway, at $1700 a pop I can't afford to keep rebuilding the 46RH and I'm wonering if there's any heavy duty swaps I should be thinking about? What about shift kits or anything like that if I have to get it rebuilt again?

What good is a list of 42REs, when his tranny is a 46RH? :?

not much seeing as how the 46RH is stronger and non-electronic
have heard lots of people talk of swapping AW4 into jeeps (of various types) not sure how it compares to a 46RH

actually turns out to be a misdiagnosis on the part of my wife and father-in-law. Mechanic thinks it's an intermittent fuel pump problem. now THAT I can handle :)

Out of curiosity though, what about a 727? They're simple, cheap, easy to rebuild and pretty stout. I don't know how they compare to the 46RH though...

Has anyone looked into swapping in a GM 700R4 ?

Seems that you can get them for about $1,000...then get NOVAK adaptors for the bellhousing and tcase $900...bingo a bullet proof 4 sp w/ OD.

Kinda pricey, but it's an option.

ZJ trans are fine, especially the 46 series, either electronic or hydra. Chrysler just shits them out at the factor for grannies to drive on and please the mini-van moms. With a little work from a shift improver kit, the correct fluid, filter, and a good trans cooler, they will last quite a while.

My OLD ZJ had a 42re with a transgo kit in her, a TCI tranny cooler, gauge, and I changed the fluid every 30k with mopar +3 and it lasted 190k with out a problem, 90k of that was on 33s-36s with stock gears majority of its life.

Gears also make a huge difference in the life of our trannies, people seem to forget that throwing a lift on, 35s, and a few stickers is gonna be it, yet, the trans still has to take up the slack for the 35s and pussy gears. Inturn, they fail even faster.

Put in the proper equipement on your tranny and it will last you much longer than what people expect.

i know this is an old thread, but if your thinking about any transmission work, definitely go with Wayne from APS. Besides the fact that Ive never heard a negative comment about his products, he is one of the nicest most supportive guys in the business and not many people back up their product like him.

well since they came stock in many CJ's and the I6 version in soem TJ's i think it shoudl be ok. definatly wont be able to do liek 120 but why woudl you want to in a jeep anyways. i think 90-100 is max depending on the gearing. But the V8's liek the higher revs anyways.

Depends on your diff gearing and tires. Remember your RPMs at a speed? Divide the RPMs by .69 to find out RPMs at same speed w/o OD. .69 is the ratio of OD in the 46RH.

If that is correct then I would be with 3.73 and 31's I run 2200 RPM at 70. I would be at 3188. I think I will pass.

you can interchange most of the parts from the 46, 47 and 48 RH because they share a common housing. So, you can build up a 46RH and essentially make it a 48 rh which comes behind dodge ram diesels. That is why I stuck with mine for the hemi swap instead of going with the 45rfe (which also has a torque limiting system) not to mention the 45rfe is rated for 500lb/ft versus 600lb/ft for the 46, 700lb/ft for the 47, and 800lb/ft for the 48 RH. You get the picture.

i've found great deals here.

i had a real bad deal from that site.

bought a trans from central ave auto parts in detroit for $500, ended up instlailng it and having it slip worse than my original. brought it back to have the guy tell me i don't know how to install a trans right...it slipped, i didnt say it didnt work, so that's crap. ended up taking him to court for my money, and i did get it. so be careful guys, just because its on that site doesnt mean its some perfect oem original part.

btw, i bought a mopar reman. trans this time with 3yr/36k warranty--very happy.

Has anyone done a nv4500 swap? I was reading about it here, http://www.nv4500.com/catalog/index.php, and it seems like it would be a good candidate for a swap. Anyone got anything on it?

Awesome trans, but it's huge and heavy. Might be tough to package in a ZJ or XJ.....

slightly off topic, but i just got a 2000 wj for the wife and the dealer just rebuilt the tranny - 42re, and i was looking on the original sticker and it says the tranny is a '4 speed auto trans with lock up torque convertor'.....
now i dont know much about the wj's - but this ones got the 4.0 and i was wondering is its just something else they just wanted to add to the list of 'goodies' or is their actually a way to manually lock it up..?

thanks
