I'm curious on how people feel about 4.88 gear sets for the D30. I know when they were first introduced, they ran 1 tooth contact, and have since gone to 2 teeth.
Anyone know what the contact is for 4.56?

I'm curious why Dana doesn't manufacter 4.88 gear sets. Are 4.56s considered the reasonable "limit"?

Although, I did find that 5.38s are available for the LP D30 as well. That's got to be a tiny pinion.

I am considering going from a 4.56 to 4.88s to help my 4.0 out.

My thinking is that if you need that low of a gear to compensate for tire size, you should probably be running something other than a 30!

if you put a 4.56 and a 4.88 set next to each other i doubt you would be able to notice the difference

i would just go with a quality 4.88 like yukon or precision

my gear shop told me as the gears get taller they start making the ring gear smaller so the pinion is not so tiny

I'm looking at running 35s, so the D30 should be adequite. I'm running 4.56s and 33s right now, and I'm constantly droping out of O/D to make it up any sort of hill. You guys with the 5.2/5.9 don't have to worry about that.
I need to put new gears in the 8.8, so I figure it'd be easy to change ratio. Could swap in a HP D30 at the same time.

LouisannaZJ... the gear gear will stay the same size. The pinion looses teeth and gets smaller. I'd have to post pics of the 3.27s that where in my 8.8. Pinion was HUGE!

Kodiak Employees have driven your ZJ and you are WAY overexaggerating your situation.

But you are correct a ZJ with 35's does not have the poop like it did when it has 29's.....4.56 to 4.88 is not going to change that.

yeah, i know the pinion gets smaller with taller gears, but when you get into really high gears like 4.88+, 5.13 etc. intead of making the pinion smaller and smaller the ring gear ges smaller too. thats what he told me anyways

honestly, do you think it is all the hassel of going from 4.56 to 4.88? i mean if you had planned on doing lockers or somethin f/r fine. but i would not drop that kind cash to go .32

The 4.56s in my 8.8 run loud, and it's annoying enough that I will probably put some new gears in it at some point or another. I'm not in a huge hurry or anything.
Granted I'd have to regear the front as well, but it'd be a good excuse to pickup a HP D30.
4.88s and 35s would put me at the same RPMs at 65 that 4.56s and 33s do.

I just wanted to discuss strength of D30 gears at the 4.88 ratio. We can talk about the 5.38 ratio if anyone has information on that.
