View Full Version : 4 Inch Drain Pipe Drainage Covers as Hood Vents?

chadjans

Was wondering HD today. Found some four inch pvc drain pipe covers. Was thinking of using them as hood vents. Drill a 4 1/4 inch hole, insert, done. Am I crazy? Don't answer that. But where is the most heat build up under the hood. Over the engine or near the area where the 5.9 vents are?

Mods: Move if you think this is gay

It's pretty easy to do, myself and Nate off this board did to mine with Lowe's heater vents. Total cost about $6 or something. I got the idea from Alaska ZJ when he still lived up here. They look good and they are functional too, you can see the heat pour out of them when the motors really warm. Just make sure you figure out exactly where you want them before you start sawzalling the hood. There are pics of mine somewhere on this board but I don't remember where. I'm at work right now but when I get home I'll try and remember to post pics or if Alaska sees this maybe he'll remember where on this board he posted the pics of mine and link you to them. So to answer your question... No you not crazy, it's a great idea

I found the thread on them that Alaska posted, it's on the third page of general grand talk. Title of thread is "meat let's go of some heat" Don't ask.

Would PVC be able to handle the heat?

Would PVC be able to handle the heat?

Good point....i think PVC melts at around 240-280 F.

So, who's got a thermal gun?/How hot does the hood get?

I made my FIPK-style intake out of PVC. 3 years and no problems yet. It's painted too if that matters.

Not that hot. Besides at 1.98 a piece, they can be easly replaceable if you go without the morning latte.

Saw your install. But I was looking for something a little smaller and no offense but better looking. Not that PVC is a finished piece lol. Going to attack this project in two weeks....

Better looking? What are you talking about it doesn't get much better than that  I'm happy with it but I'm not building something to take to a ZJ customs show in Cali either lol. It's gonna be an ugly mother when I'm done with it anyway

Damn that is an ugly grill on the ZJ in the pic above. I don't see how those 5.9 hoodvents do much good, they look to small and they are placed all the way over to the side of the hood. Just cut a big square hole in the hood and don't cover it up at all for maximum air flow and increased horse power

Damn that is an ugly grill on the ZJ in the pic above. I don't see how those 5.9 hoodvents do much good, they look to small and they are placed all the way over to the side of the hood. As for the vents, they are not the 5.9's if you re-read my post
They measure (about) 14"x5"

and please cut a big hole in the hood  Id love to see some pics. 8)

No problem I've got plenty of love to spare :D

I already did cut two big holes in the hood 8) works great!

When I mentioned the 5.9 vents I wasn't talking about yours I was talking about the actual 5.9 vents. They aren't very big and they are placed too far to the side for my liking.

the 5.9L vents suck air out at speed

the lewvers create a low pressure system over them which draws hot air out

nate
12-10-2004, 03:45 PM
Low pressure system? Am I on weather.com? ok, I thought it was funny.

Gary's Home Depot vents did turn out pretty darn good. He came over the house one day and said, "hey want to help me install these?" I'm thinking ok this is pretty damb ghetto, but hey, it's not my Jeep, so sure I'll cut up that hood for you :D

Oh, BTW Gary... I think it cost more than $6. Remember you had to buy me a new pair of safety glasses after you smashed mine? And the sawzall blades you broke... and the cut off disk for the grinder?

That's true but the actual cost of the vents was like $6. The other stuff wouldn't be a cost involved for anyone else trying this unless they were as mechanically handicapped as me :(

I bought a new hood at Certi-fit for $67 and used a set of Pontiac Z34 vents.. I put them directly over the headers.. You should see the heat coming out of there at red lights...

On my dad's 5.9 we took the box thingies underneath off, now we see the heat coming out of them as well.

I agree they would work better over the headers but where they are they do work, we have never had any probs. with the 5.9 overheating with stock t-stat, radiator, and water pump...i really like yours too AW

More than enough hot air comes out of them. I'd be wlling to bet they flow the same amount of air as 5.9 and GTP pontiac vents because they have no louvers blocking them.

Chad

I'm wondering if the louvers actually direct the air flow better which would cause a higher pressure differential which would suck out more air.

Hell if I know. I have since added two more vents (four in total) removed the cowl plastic, front underhood weather stripping, windshield and windshield wiper crap. So it all flows good.

AerodynamiX:
lol if you really want people to stare at you with the WTF look on their face:
Tape 5" pieces or yard all over your hood to see where the low pressure areas are at speed. I did this and ended up with where they are as kind of a compromise between low pressure area and not having to cut the hood supports. After I installed the vents I put some yarn on the vents and there is some good air flow out of them at speed now. So since there was a low pressure area in that spot before, by putting vents in after it encourages the hot engine air to flow out of the vents when at speed.... or at least it did on my with my ghetto wind testing:D
