Well I finially picked a name for my rig and I guess it's time to start my journal. What have I finished in the last month or so...

A few notes for people planning on doing 8.8s... I highly recommend re-using the stock coil brackets and sway bar mounts. If you are a little short on funds, you can re-use the stock brackets. If you need a little more beef, you can brace the stock mounts. Personally I used MORE's brackets and they turned out ok. If you have adjustable arms, this would be an awesome time to do this:

http://www.fototime.com/%7B54E1EEF5-A2C6-43B3-902C-36F90A7B39FE%7D/picture.JPG[list=]
and rotate it up.
http://www.fototime.com/%7B5ABC5B12-B85F-42BA-B3DA-06C881D29EAF%7D/picture.JPG
http://www.fototime.com/%7BEB73FFAB-4F1B-4028-B0C0-37A8570C9A54%7D/picture.JPG
BUT becareful how much you rotate them up as you will be changing the geometry of your suspension.

I also installed a 231HD from Transfer Case Express in Oakland, CA. I would have gotten the case from JB conversions but time was against me. My 231 was OK. The plug for the shift indicator was different. I also sometimes have dificulty shifting the case. Other than that, the thing is golden.

I was really unhappy with Kevin's truss so I butchered his truss and some RE arms and made these:
http://www.fototime.com/%7B938C4ED4-3774-4294-87A6-DA663FD40643%7D/picture.JPG
Wasn't a half bad process either
http://www.fototime.com/%7B5CC611BC-D481-40DC-82B1-FC560960BC6E%7D/picture.JPG
http://www.fototime.com/%7BB6FACC37-50DB-4D2D-9E7B-8960C7F65BF8%7D/picture.JPG
http://www.fototime.com/%7B79F5E5EA-97A2-4575-9C17-37B676D41FB0%7D/picture.JPG

This is what Kevin's truss looks like if you haven't seen it before:
http://www.fototime.com/%7B5CACA6C7-682F-4387-BE88-A0848F6512E4%7D/picture.JPG
And this is it chopped in two on the ground:
http://www.fototime.com/%7B5431C516-EBA7-4C32-9A46-4FBEAC4A823E%7D/picture.JPG

Then I added switches to the front consol...
http://www.fototime.com/%7BE4ECC7CA-6409-44A8-90CE-6030FFA490EC%7D/picture.JPG
Flip the switch on right and an it powers up an LED display I'm in the middle of as well as the other two switches. Middle switch will be front ARB (when I get it swapped in) and the left is the rear ARB. Not bad... I got the military style switches from summit racing and and other from Radio shat.

That gets it's power from a distribution block bolted to the rear seats. That block is wired to my optima via a 4 g/a wire. Also connected to the block is my OBA and my stereo.
http://www.fototime.com/%7B3006D73B-5B08-48D0-B745-0EB68DFA7154%7D/picture.JPG
http://www.fototime.com/%7B1D01A4A5-FB6C-40DE-BF0B-1C356FB94502%7D/picture.JPG
OBA is "puma" 12v compressor from buzzard gulch. They have this guy for sale on ebay for $180 shipped. In includes the tank, a regulator, a preasure switch and the compressor all assembled together nicely. The amp on the sub is a Rockford Fosgate 600.1 and the sub is Fosgate's new 2Ohm sub. Schweet....

And yea.... not by much but a 35x12.5 WILL fit in the stock spare location.
http://www.fototime.com/%7BC6D9DD7F-2FE9-49F0-B77C-8AC69A5C6B6E%7D/picture.JPG

Thats it for tonight... Tuesday my replacement 5150 will be coming in as are my SHORTER limmiting straps. Yea I broke another one... this one off-road... It's under warantee so I could care less. I'm also modding out my ARB... along with that I'm going to sand mine down and re-paint it. Clean up my winch. Add synthedic. all due a little alter. I'm outa here... night

original idea with the RE arms and truss stuff. I'm waiting til after xmas to get started on my 8.8. Guess your not really worried about cargo room with all that stuff you have back there.

BTW What good is a fullsize spare gonna do you without a wheel??

I have a buddy that works at 4 wheel parts in Oakland, ca. He had the tire in stock but he didn't have the rim I wanted so I picked up the tire. I'm picking up it's rim and mounting the two together on thursday.... smartass lol

You need a rear bumper though. I take it that's probably already on the list.

that rock ring is Poison Spyder's with multi-link tabs...

As for the rear bumper... I'm going to concentrate on building a sway bar system, the front axle and comprehensive limiting straps before I work on the rear. Right now I have the tow hitch and gas skid and that seems to be all that I need for the time being.

I love that pic of me on AprilzWarrior's sandstones in his ranch... I need to resize that pic at some point.

http://www.fototime.com/%7BE5E5C473-1936-439D-A226-25F63EB26DA1%7D/picture.JPG
I bought a socket set for these guys from napa for like 5 bucks. Throttle install took like 10 minutes. Noticeable difference: I would say so.

I also started trimming my ARB bumper up a bit.

I have my new fairlead for my synthedic rope which I'm going to bold dirrectly to the bumper instead of bolting it to the fairlead that use to be on the bumper.

I cleaned the hubs off...

Stillens... Bling Bling! They arived before the brake pads I ordered from Kolak so I installed some new napa brake bads that I had laying around. Way better than my old brakes.

Hopefully my new axleshafts will be ariving soon and I'll finially be able to ditch these:

Although they have held up for years of abuse so they're not half bad.

Saturday actually... Holister hills is where they host top truck challange but its nothing that exciting. I'll be going there a few times this month as well asa few other places. I'm shooting on maybe heading down to AZ or Johnson's Ranch for a weekend of wheeling in January,

Why didn't you put a flat section in your 8.8 bridege that parallels the axle tubes? I mean that thing has nothing but bend. Then you could have gotten it closer to the diff and given your self more room above the axle. Yeah your lower mounts would have had to been below the axle tube center to get the seperation from top mount to bottom mount but mounting the lowers in front of the tube is a fad.

Because it was free in my scrap pile. It was a screw up bend I had already made for something else, and he made it fit. Free=Good.

Well.... That is a Poison Spyder Ring... BUT they Fucked up and welded the Ring Guard on the WRONG side of the Bolt Plate. Nice ! So I got it for free, cut off the Ring Guard and welded it down in the correct spot.

Hows the floor pan clearance near the control arms and on top of the diff? Mine hits with 6 inches of lift and my arms are lower.

Why did you trim the "wings" off the ARB bumper? You do know those are structural right? Helps support the bumper so the winch doesn't make a V out of thing when doing some serious pulling.

The trail was alot of stop and go. We took turns with the 3 grands and 1 TJ to make progress up the trail. I don't think the pics really do it justice to the trail though; we had one flop, alot of tire lifting and a mountain of near flops. Getting out of the trail, I broke my radius arms. A gentleman out of a Santa Cruz (sp?) Jeep Club lended up some 6013 rod and we got me fixed up but the resulting DW from trying to baby it home caused all sorts of damage.

A couple things to ALWAYS carry on the trail with you... 6013 rod and atleast 1 set of jumper cables. I never considered bringing rod with me when I go places but after this trip, it's coming with me everywhere I go.

I don't really want to fix my gheto radius arms... If I did, I will have to buy new RE uppers, fab some new brackets and re-weld everything together. What broke on the arms was the material, not the welds or the RE joints so I am kinda hesitant to re-do what was built before (even if it was beefed up). If money is OK, then I'll look to RE, Rock Control or Clayton for new radius arms up front (and simply have something bullet-proof). But I gotta get this thing fixed as this is my DD.

The shocks broke from the DW... I'm not replacing them anymore. I'm going to weld the eyes on and call it good (even if it cooks the shocks). It's un-fucking-believable how much I have broken these shocks. PEOPLE DO NOT BUY 5150s TILL THEY FIX THESE THINGS. PEOPLE EVERYWHERE ARE BREAKING 5150s AND IT’S A DESIGN ISSUE.

I’m also going to plasma my ARB up. I’m really disappointed in it and even if I take it apart to the beyond the point of reasonable re-sale, atleast I’ll trim the thing till I’m happy.

Perhaps you can brace that ARB on the inside with a welder and some stock to make it stronger?

Forgive my ghetto diagram. But would something like that increase the strength? That trail looks SICK... pretty similar to some of the shit we've got around here. Sorry to hear about the damage.

The tires were rubbing on the bumper and thats why the bumper bent. I'll be trimming the bumper at first to clear the tires and then later trimming will be for me to add clearance for things.

if the material of the arms broke, i'm going to guess it broke near the welds. this could mean a few things. im proper welding EI to hot. or the material ou used was just not thick enough.

I'm guessing it was just not thick enough... one side the material literally ripped in half. On the other it broke right above the welds which made it easier to repair.

How thick was it? 1/8"? I suggest you look at a clayton kit to see how a upper radius arm should be spaced away from the lower. I suspect it got streesed in that area and bound up. Hence the upper arms MUST be mounted in the proper location to prevent binding. Why didn't you go with two long uppers? Easier to design. Anyways here are some pics of long arm setups: http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4290332795

Dont blame the Welder... http://users.pandora.be/IMS/smileys/mad15.gif

This is a material issue... The Upper Arm needed to be boxed, rather than just scrap thrown together... from what I can see, it broke where the bolt hole was... am I wrong ? Thats still pretty shitty, and I feel bad.

At quad wrapped, they should reach maximum stretch just before the shock maxxes out. I'm going to zip tie these guys up so they won't end up being eaten by tire tread.

Originally, I was going to just weld these guys back together and call it good but at this point I am getting rid of my 5150s. I spent some time on the phone with Nick Inuzza and I'm going to test out some Rubicon Shocks up front for now. They're made by eidelbrock and RE has yet to make something that hasn't impressed me so I figure they were worth a try. More updates soon.

UPDATE!!! 1/30/05

Amazing what bordom and a welder can come up with

http://www.fototime.com/%7B927F6CDE-9CE3-491B-AB79-A51275D77DC3%7D/picture.JPG

Bumper remounted with the fairlead off. I need to weld some bolts onto here for my fairlead (which'll have to be later).

http://www.fototime.com/%7B8A14E623-B0B7-4448-AE13-553F4E8D89DD%7D/picture.JPG

Acos and RK springs on all 4 coners

http://www.fototime.com/%7BFDE67EB2-4C1B-44E4-B536-A8496EF3DB26%7D/picture.JPG

I also ordered some slightly longer RE shocks to replace my wasted 5150s... they're OK shocks but I don't think I'll be ordering any more of these. After I get my suspension, springs, mounts and everything ironed out, I *think* I'm going with pro-comps new remote resavoir shocks.

New RE trackbar bolten then welded in

Kevin's trilink modded.

http://www.fototime.com/%7BB4EC27E5-CF50-4972-8A39-01338C52904F%7D/picture.JPG

What was happening is that when I had my tools in the back of my rig (floorjack, highjack, jackstands, air tools, sockets, wrenches, etc. etc. etc.), my suspension would cycle and the trilink would smack the driveshaft. GREAT!!!! Brand new driveshaft that's been lathed down a bit. Well I cut out the support and then welded a 1/4" plate ontop of the trilink for support. I'm iritated to hell that the trilink hit my driveshaft so it's modded for now. Another problem I'm having with it is that my rear-end is wandering. Like I'll hit a bump or make a turn and te rear end springs out. I haven't figured out how to solve the problem yet.

Radius arms 2.0

I need to grind the welds down, do some bracing and reweld a couple parts but after a few weeks of beating my heep, I think this will work.

Tomorrow I order parts for speed yway engineering parts to make a currie style swaybar. I'll include a FULL writeup and parts list later this week.

Did you use a coat hanger to weld that track bar bracket on?

Nordic1

lol .025 flux core wire... it's what came with my welder. Midweek I'm picking up a bottle of gas and some solid core wire.. and at that point I'm going to reweld everything I welded with the flux wire.

Um, welding over your flux, which by nature burns hotter than solid core isn't going to change the flux weld. Secondly the flux has a tendency to fuk with solid core process. What welder you using? Seems WAY to cold. So switching to solid isn't going to do sh!t.

Remove the bracket, grind the string cheese weld down and reweld with your flux core wire, because I am going to assume you are using a 110v welder. Or better yet leave the practice welds to some flat plate and have someone weld in your tbar bracket. My second question is: what is wrong with bolts?

I would bolt in the trackbar bracket and after a couple weeks, the bracket would become loose... I didn't want to locktite everything and having a loose bracket every few weeks seemed problematic in my mind so welding it on was just the next step.

Thanks for the input about hte flux vs solid... I guess I'll grind everything down next weekend.

If it isn't moly filled it will seize when pressure is applied. i.e. using your winch. Look at the lubrication specs under the specifications section under any warn winch.

We went through Gate Keeper and Granite Bowl friday, Walker hill, Old Sluice, Big Sluice, Slab and a few others Saturday and then Wentworth Springs and Cadilac Hill (IMO the hardest... especially since the whole thing was wet/swamped) saturday.

Breakage:

I wasted a shock eye on day 1... Fixed it with 24v stick/battery welding. 3/32" 7010 (I think) rod

http://www.fototime.com/%7BF972F232-6F13-49AB-A113-4A6DE42BFABC%7D/picture.JPG

And some seriously wasted control arm bushings, I was able to drive home no problem

Matt bent an LCA mount which Jerod welded up and ended up working out fine

http://www.fototime.com/%7BA56DE574-1234-4559-BAC5-3D4066AF5F82%7D/picture.JPG

That and his Trail Ready went fubar

Jerod ripped an LCA mount off of the body... which was rewelded 3 different times, broke every time and ended up getting ratchet strapped/gheto'ed to get him home.

We didn't have issues with them but the world famous Rubicon DUI mobile

I didn't loose it, I left it at home (I was in a rush to leave the house)

And thanks for being a dick Dirk... For somebody that wins the intard award for drilling holes in their tranny (actually redrilling because he stripped the pan bolts from over tightening but drilled to deep into the trans), you sure are quick to make fun of other people.

Jerod didn't need my winch to fix Matt's jeep... He used a ratchet strap or a ballpein hammer or something... A winch would have been overkill. The ONE time we could have used the winch is when Jerod got high-centered in the marsh past Cottage Springs... He "lost it" then because he was getting water in his floorboards or something. We tried dragging him backwards with two jeeps and made no progress (so its not like the winch would have helped anyway). He ended up getting pulled forward by a Yota buggy that was right behind us.

Chase,
tell them how you puked your track bar bolt and just quit "Im done didilly done" and Matt saved you with a spare bolt...

I used his grade 8 spare bolt that he had.... had I not used that I would have pulled off one of my uppers and used that. He was generous to let me use it, but he didn't "save" me. And after 30 miles of wheeling, I was "done didilly done" and I wanted to go home. This happened after Cadilac hill, after we waited 2 hours for Jerod to fix his jeep and after I smashed my finger trying to tighten a bolt.

or the drive shaft puking, no biggie but still.

Yea no biggie... I spit a cap on my way home

Yea you guys racing up the hill, breaking down ("stopping") whatever and then I catch up and pull over for you. Then you guys speed off and we repeat. Not my fault I don't want to do 80 on the freeway. Oh yea which reminds me... The 5 of us waited till early afternoon for YOU to get off of work, so don't run your mouth about "waiting".

Your right Chase, I'm sorry I was just messing with you. And for the record I don't think that I stripped the pan bolts by over tightening them I think I cross threaded them. And the one spot that I drilled a little too far into the tranny does not appear to be the place that is leaking.
