It runs my pnumatic grinder no problem.... I will upload pics of my setup later. 299 and comes with some cheap tools

i usually run a 20 gallon 4.5 HP CP oiless... it's hardly enough sometimes when I'm REALLY wrenching (like running the cutoff wheel)

Save yourself the PITA, get a 30gallon 6 HP oiled 2 stage. My buddy often "stores" his in my garage, couldn't have finished the jeep without it..

I got the same kit a couple years ago. The tools are worthless, but the compressor works well for me.

My point is for $330 you can get a big upright oiless from Home Depot with a 100% duty cycle :D

aren't oiled compressors quieter? I'm going to be adding oil to my oiless compressor on a regular basis.

oil type compressors typically are more HD units, higher duty cycles, more CFM, longer life (when maintained), better motors

I run a 80 gallon, Sullair, I think it is 175 psi max. Replaced the three phase motor with a 220 and put a plug. It is as big as the compressors my Dad runs at the shop, but it is in my garage. It is way overkill but nice, you want to get a two stage if at all possible. Or it may tend to run more. But that really depends on it's size I guess. A budy of mine had a single stage form Sears, it ran all the time, and was loud as hell.

Oil less compressors suck. Noisy and generally shorter life span. By the way, Home Depot is running a similar deal on a compressor with better numbers. Look less at horsepower and more at what CFM it puts out at 90 PSI. I'd look for at least 6 CFM at 90 PSI. Running cutoff wheels will use some serious air, and a big impact will too. Check out what Home Depot has to offer. I think they have a compressor that puts out 6 CFM @ 90 PSI, 20 gallon, for something like 269 bucks. I was there Sunday checking it out.

I'm going to research it a bit to make sure it won't harm the compressor but I was going to add a lubricator to the intake of the compressor... That way A: the valves and everything would stay oiled and B: it would oil all of the guns and tools I use

Question about draining the compressor.

Do you guys drain it after you are done working for the day or do you leave it presurized all the time?

Nordic1

I have an air compressor at my workplace... it works at 6 cfm for about 2 1/2 hours a day. I drained it for the first time in a year and maybe a drop of water hopped out. Although we do keep the compressor in a pretty dry place.

I drain mine maybe once a month or so, whenever I think of it. Not really something I worry about.

Nordic1
11-30-2004, 02:11 PM
I don't think its something any of us really need to worry about... I guess if you were working with paint (like with one of those "low preasure high output gravity fed" paint guns or whatever) or if you dodn't oil your guns on a regular basis.

It's mainly to help the tank from rusting out. That being said, my Dad has a compressor from 1960 something, I don't think it's even got a drain. Tank still holds pressure just fine today.

I was told it was to keep the tank from rusting, and that it should be drained everyday. it sounds like that is just one of those old wife's tales, or in this case a husband's tale as I am sure it was NOT my mom that told me about this.

when you say oiless are "loud" how loud is "loud"
like as loud as a lawnmower or as loud as a flowmaster on a ZJ?

i saw this at harbor freight. is "central pneumatic" a good brand

Enh, only 12 gallon, and 3.5 CFM @ 90 PSI.

Not that great. Might run an impact okay, but nothing high consumption like a cutoff tool.

LouisianaZJ

i would run another tank in series with that one. (i think you can do that, right?)

Personally I would not run that compressor. I'm sure its whisper quiet and everything but it flows just a little more CFMs than my OBA (3.2 at 90psi is what I got I think).

Lookin better IMO

What it's going to come down to is simply how much you want to spend and what kind of longevity you want out of it.

If you want something that is going to last a lifetime, get a OIL type - BELT driven compressor. Be sure to look at things like duty cycle and pump type. Shitty compressors have low duty cycles, both on the pump and the motor. They don't use cast iron pumps, etc.

You can ask Overkill from expierence, he has a oilless direct drive. It vibrates like mad, is loud as hell (and an annoying loud, mind you. Like a hive of bees) and seems to be slowly dying. And due to the low duty cycle, it needs to stop and rest for a while.

I bought the Husky a year ago and he's used my compressor more than I have. Rightfully so, as we do all of our wrenching at his place. During Project Phoenix, it got used, a lot. It's extremely quiet, will last a LONG time if well taken care of and puts out quite a bit of air for it's size. And it can run non stop without having to cool down (both 100% duty on the motor and the cast iron pump). This is a big deal when painting, sandblasting and using high CFM tools like air ratches and especially cut off wheels.

Seriously, spend the extra coin and get a good compressor, it's well worth it in both the short term and long term.

Also, don't go connecting a secondary tank on a cheap compressor. Due to the extra volume the compressor now has to fill, it's sure to run it over it's duty cycle.

As for GoingOffRoading running a oilless compressor w\ oil, I'd love to see the pics.. Most oilless compressors are cheap aluminum cylinders that are sealed. They are "oilless" for a reason...

Close up of the compressor (the price has since gone up to $399 I believe)

http://www.lordathens.com/Jeep/compressor.jpg

And a pic of the compressor at Overkills, with it tied into his compressor. Note, his compressor was simply acting as a storage tank. You can do this well with a compressor with a decent output and 100% duty. (Excuse the horrid quality, it was Overkills camera and compression "techniques" ;) )

Loud like have to yell over loud. It's annoying as hell. I have an older horizontal version of the Craftsman one on the first page. I rarely have to wait for it to catch up, even with a cutoff wheel or whatever. Just it's loud as hell.

to go back to the draining topic i work at a bodyshop and the compressor automatically drains all the crap out when its turned off but yet you have to remember that there is painting involved the compressor I use at home is just a cheap 30 gallon craftsman model and its about dead noisest dam thing cant wait till it does die im gonna get myself a husky 60 gallon from HD.

More like a Goped Scooter (Oil less) they are just plain loud...

Trust me get a belt driven, plus you can oil it.

What happens to pistons and connecting rods that dont have oil... you pay more when it comes time to replace them... I know.
