View Full Version : Rear RK springs unseating

Has anybody had problems with rear RK springs coming off of the upper spring perch under full flex. I was driving up a wall on my driveway and the spring popped out. John "FriscoZJ" (on NAGCA) did this as well and we had a hell of a time trying to put that spring back in. I know the duh answer is that I'm running shocks that are too long but I was shooting for a better solution than getting shorter shocks. Has anybody experimented with upper spring retainers (kind of like what Ty did... the rock control guy with the clean buggied ZJ out of Chico, CA)? Jim "NorCalJR" is running accos f/r and he mentioned to me that he was not having problems with his springs popping out just yet. I'll be mocking up my limmiting staps turkey weekend so I guess I'll take some more pics of what I mean then. Thanks!

just weld a piece of appropriate size exhaust tubing to the upper spring post around 4 or 5 inches long and that will keep the spring from falling out and will let it reseat when it is recompressed.

Works great on mine even with the two inch spacer and is cheap and simple to do.

Tube or ACOS and/or limit strap...is your shock fully expended?

You can't see it (it's behind the tire in this pic)....but i have a limit straps so that the shock has 1/2" of travel left.

1 1/2 tube with a 1/2 fender washer welded on the end. Drilled a 1/2 hole through the post. Bolted them up with a long 1/2 bolt.

kevinsjeepparts.com has something like those home made ones, but you'd have to pay $10 or so.

Jay - That pics not from your ZJ, is it? (color)

Either way, I love it, never thought of exhaust pipe, but it's perfect.

Spring retainers = newb tech

In that pic above it looks like the shaft on the shock is bent to me... optical illusion?

The criteria around here for non newb tech is pretty steep...

Sorry guys, I've gotta agree with Dave here (not that it's rare!) - I think the argument behind newbie tech is anything that has popped up on JU and NAGCA over the years, or is kinda obvious....

If this was posted as "here is a good solution for dropping springs" and written as a writeup, it'd be different.

If this board is doing it's job, this will pretty much be the most active area of it. Suspensions and steering are for measurements, sheer strenght, and all that technical shit that I don't even pretend to know what I'm talking bout on.

What it comes down to is, newb tech isn't an insult, it's simply a "general" tech area for things that pop up several times...

ya, thats my jeep. since its from florida, it was sandblasted regularly so its pretty clean under there...................i mean was :D

I agree with matt, this is definitly a noob thread, but there is nothing wrong with it. I think there could be a lot more traffic through here...but honestly, i think some people are just scared!

my $.03, clean the bs out of this thread and keep it on topic.

This subject hasn't been covered lately on any of the Grand boards. It kinda got lost with all the BB and clear corner posts.

The guy, Jay, who installed my lift (yeah, no tools and no time) put them on for me. When I asked WTF, he just said that they would keep the springs from popping out. I never even thought about it. So, one year later at GSE, I was walking up to Clayton as he was welding his own on ZJ when some slag popped off the weld and burnt the crap out of me.

I keep meaing to take some pics of mine and use them as a standard post just for this. I get off work early tomorrow and will take some pics.

If you just weld a flat piece of strap across the bottom of your mount, you can do this:

What size tubing should I use? Or a size you might recommend...

umm...that on mine there is just 1 1/4" galvanized conduit(sp?)...and i just welded it straight up, hence the shitty welds.
