Was just at Autozone. They carry 3 foot underbody lighting that runs on 12 v for cheap. Anyone using them for rock lights?

I thought about it, but I don't think they would take the impact very well. Not that they would get hit, but just the slamming and jolting.

I run some 12 dollar walmart jobs that work pretty well. I've had to replace the bulbs a couple times, but nothing too major.

I think it'd be funny as hell, but I doubt that it'd put off enogh light / put up with much abuse. Those tubes are pretty big targets!

I figured I could mount them on the side of the sleaved frame rail. I don't generally see rocks in the floor pan area between the frame rail and the pinch seam. But shit happens.

A four piece white "neon" kit can be had off ebay for 60 dollars shipped. This would include 2 4 foot lights, and 2 3 foot lights with a switch, wiring and transformer.

A couple of the BTG AZ rockcrawler guys are running them but I think in a LED variety. Maybe I could get some LED rope light....

I honestly think the white neons would give plenty of light, but for 60 bucks I question the value. I mean, they might be durable enough, they might not. For 60 bucks you can rock 4 smaller lights and buy an arsenal of spare bulbs.

I saw the pencil beam lights you are running. Seem like they would work better....

Changing the subject: Cody, where did you mount yours?

Petersons put some on the Ultimate Ave. They showed a pic of it and it looked weak. They they worked well and could change the colors, woo.

Was it the Ultimate Av or the Ultimate Taco that got the LED rock lights? I don't remember. Anyway, they looked good, but I don't know if the added benefit justifies the cost.

I just used some cheapies that I got on sale at autozone. I think they were like 10 or 15 bucks a pair.

I mounted my rear-facing rock light to the axle tube of my LP 30. I had bought a set of aux reverse lights that you mount to your trailer hitch, and it came with some extra large zip ties to mount them. Well, I mounted the reverse lights to my tire carrier, and decided to use the zip ties to attach the rock light to the axle tube. It works great, and the pattern couldn't be better. I was kinda scared that it wouldn't take the abuse, but its held up fine for the past 4 months. The only complaint I've ever gotten is it tends to blind the person behind you as you start down a slope.

My rear rock light (facing forward) on the other hand died on the first trip out. I mounted it on top of the rear frame tie-in of my drivers side Slider. It worked great, and was up out of the way, but the first time I went down a gravel road at speed with the tires aired down, the lens / bulb got shattered by a flying rock. For any light facing forward, you've really got to take that into consideration. On my buddy's XJ, we mounted the rear light above the axle, just in front of the gas tank. IIRC, We just used a self tapping screw through the floor pan. It gets a bad shadow from the driveshaft, but it lights up the front tires just fine. If used in conjunction with the front light, its not really an issue at all. Plus its up and out of the way, and very unlikely to get smacked.

The Taco got the leds! They looked sweet, the Ave got the ghetto lights.

You can get ones that are made of plastic tubing, with either LEDs or just regular bulbs inside them. It's almost like a clear garden hose with bulbs inside it. They're tough as hell and bright enough for rock lights. A buddy of mine runs them and they work pretty well. Cheap and tough too.

FYI walmart had those lights on sale for $9/pair! picked up a couple pairs and hooked 2 of them up to my existing fog light wires. only trouble is my headlights hafta be on to use them. But much much easier than wiring in a switch.
