Just wanted to know if anyone may have this. I saw this on either Currie's or Moser's web site and wanted to know the drawbacks of a full spool. I know with a 33 spline axle, and no c-clips, it should be a bit stronger than even a super 44, but just want some feedback. What's the real difference between a spool and a detroit?

A spool spins both tires at the same speed all the time, unless something breaks. A detroit is a locker which only maintains a minimum wheel speed, such as around a corner- the outside wheel can disconnect and sping faster.
Spools affect handeling and tire wear.

Time to start reading up on stuff newbie!!

That's newbie tech if I ever say it!

I'm curious how big of a tire you're planning to run on the 8.8. Most 8.8's are 31 spline. I'm sure there's a 33 spline upgrade, but then you're talking new shafts and everything.

I believe he has the 33 spline.

You can get a 33 spline or a 35 spline spool for the 8.8

Okay, but if all they make in a 33 or 35 spline is a spool, it's not worth it to me to have to buy new axleshafts and all that crap.

Not saying I would do it, but those spools are available, if you want to make new axles. Mark Williams will make 'em for you.

 if you really want/need 33/35 spline why not go with a 14bolt/D60/D70 etc. chances are if you are doing stuff that requires 33+spline, the c cliped 8.8 is not going to be the best choice

I believe it is strange that makes the 33 spline axles. You have to either use the c-clip eliminators or get the new housing ends. They offer a spool as well as a clutch-type limited slip for them... albeit a little costly. It was just a thought. I really don't think I'd spend the money for that right now, but it is an option for anybody looking.

I'm still looking into options for locking that 8.8 you sold me, Gabe. By the way.. I will take those gears off your hands. I got your message the other night but we were down in the pits and I wasn't able to return it.

Actually that same night some guy grenaded an axleshaft and bent his tie-rod all to hell in one spectacular hill climb
