anybody know the spline count on a 249 where it goes onto the tranny, i dont feel like pulling mine off to count it, just yet.

ok heres the thing, i picked up a 242 t-case today and from what i understand some of them are direct bolt ins and some are not. i was wondering on the 249 count so i can count the 242 splines i have to see if they are the same, so i can just swap them, or if i am going to have to change the shaft over from the 249. thanks.

oh, i forgot to add that the 242 t-case came out of a grand cherokee with a 4.0. it is either a 94 or 95 year.

Both will have 23 spline input shafts, however the lengths may be different. If they are indeed different, you will want to take the one out of the 249 and put it in the 242. They're interchangeable, BUT you need to make sure the gear cut on them is the same.

what year rig are you swapping into? there was a gear cut change around 95, so if it's later, you're going to have some fun.

Dave's writeup on the 231 swap in the FAQ section is pretty much the same for a 242, and I'm pretty sure Swampboy has a 242 swap writeup somewhere..........

ok how do i check just the length, the length of the part coming out of the t-case where it bolts to the tranny? give me the measurement of the 249's and i will check it against the 242 i have.

it came out of a 94 grand cherokee 4.0 and its going into a 94 grand cherokee 5.2.
i read all of the write ups on the changing over the shaft, i just want to make sure i have to before i do it, in other words if this thing will just bolt in then HELL YEAH i am golden. let me know on the length of the 249, thanks.

you won't know the length until you pull it. 94 to 94 though, you'll most likely be able to just swap the input (well, actually the whole planetary assembly is easier, that's what I did). Basically, you'll have to pull the t-case, then swap the input gear/planetary assembly from the 249 into the 242....

the gear cut change was mid 1994

I'm sure they used parts into 95
anything around that time frame is a crap shoot.

I have swapped older inputs into newer cases and vis versa, with some I swapped the input and sun gear others I had to swap input only each case was a bit different, but if you have both cases you should be able to pull it off

Have a 93 witht he 249... and my buddy offered me a quadra trac II out of a 00' WJ for free.... is it worth the drive and hour and a half away?

Most likely have to change it. The V8's need a longer input than the I6's ..

But its simple... Here you go...

probably not, I assume this is a 249 you would be getting vs a 247? the 247 would be an interesting swap I suppose.

You will most likely run into issues with the inputs gear cut.

When i did mine, I got the 242 out of an 89 XJ I believe. The input was longer than the one on my 249. We swapped the whole thing.
