I was under the heep trying to figure out why the driveline vibes were so bad last night and found the rear output on the t-case was able to move up and down a little. I thought WTF, that ain't right! So tonight I started tearing apart the case. I was thinking the rear output bearing was toast, so I had one from an old 231 ready to put in. Pulled the tailcone off and I noticed I could push and pull on the mainshaft and it would move about 1/2" in and out. If I pulled it all the way out and jiggled it up and down I could walk the output bearing a considerable ways out of its race.

Here's a few pics of the different positions:

This is the bearing out as far as I could get it

Shaft pulled out all the way, bearing came a little ways out

Just the shaft pulled out

Everything all nice and snug the way it SHOULD be

From what I can tell I could just be missing a snap ring somewhere, need to pull the rest of the case to find out. I planned on rebuilding here once the snow hit the hills, but may have to bump that up a little bit. I've had this case in for the last 15-20k miles maybe, always made a weird noise, think I may have finally figured it out! If this is the source of that noise though, I'm very amazed that it held up this long.

that makes me want to check mine. What kind of driveline vibe was it?

It was a nasty almost shudder like vibe over 45. It was smooooooooth until then, after that just nasty.

Found out at least part of the problem! A guy on another forum pointed out the snap ring on the back end of the main shaft. TOTALLY not in the right spot! It had worked its way out of the groove and was causing everything to go everywhere. Hopefully it didn't screw anything else up too bad. Just gonna slap a new snap ring in there and call it good for now.

Pickin up the part manana. Gonna slap it in and call it good for at least the rest of this wheelin season and then rebuild it sometime this winter.

whats involved in rebuilding one? Ive never done it before but I know for a fact my case could use a rebuild and I need to install my Tera 2-LO. Got any links?

Ive got a super nasty vibration that starts at 55mph and goes to about 58mph, then completely disapears to 63mph and starts up again. And its like a really fine vibration, not something big

Not sure if that vibe is related to your t-case or not, but rebuilding one is pretty simple. If you had to swap input gears to get your case in you've already done most of the work. I plan on getting mine from www.jbconversions.com

The Master Kit replaces every part you see here that is shaded red.

The part on mine that went is #19.

Yeah, what kind of crappy rebuild kit doesn't come with a chain?!

A master rebuild kit is usually around $100 and is just bearings, shift pads, seals and snap rings like you see in the pic. The chain is another $60 or so.
