im trying to design fender protectors/sliders- im thinking sch 80 pipe b/c its cheap and i wont fus if i mess up a bend or 2- im going to be cutting out the rockers and putting in some 2x6 or 1/4 angle- havent decided yet- anyways- im thinking about making a bent tube along the wheel arch on the front with a crossbar by the window/hood meeting point- for side load stiffness- i just cant think of a decent way to reenfoce the rear arch w/o cutting a hole in the side of the body- any sugestions?

My opinion is that ZJ's have too much body as it is. I sure as hell wouldn't go adding to it. Maybe it's different where you ride, but I couldn't ride half the stuff I do if I was any wider. Personally I'm just letting the sides get beat as far in as possible.

my axles are about 6 inches wider then stock anyways- right now the tires are the furthest out- id just like something so if i lean in to something i can slide off w/o massive body damage-

deadman,
Do you have or know of where I could find some more pics of that XJ? It kinda looks like Borton or whoever from JU, but I thought his was yellow. That's basically what I want to do with the ZJ.

Yup, Borton's... but why "was"? Did he sell, wreck, modify it? Dunno how old these pics are...

That is a very good looking ZJ... looks like it performs well too.

Soo... Do these fender tubes actually work?

i had my rears set up that way with 1.5" sch40 and they would push into my body panels when i would hit things. unless reinforced that single pipe will not take a huge beeting.

sorry I don't have a better pic of it, but look what this local guy in the XJ did:

sorta interesting how he incorporated 3/8" flatbar into the existing body lines.....

What "was" that thing in front of him?

used to be a wagoneer. Actually, it's still a lot of wagon under there 360, 727, stock AMC20 and D44, frame, front springs, etc. He has an atlas, a ghetto rear coil setup and a lot of chopping but a surprising amount of stock parts....

Here's another shot:

For grins, here's my old CJ (now long gone) on the same obstacle:
