View Full Version : Front driveshaft upgrades

I got to see one of our wonderful stock driveshaft CV joints go boom today under very low stress (31s and very little skinny pedal) so I'm considering upgrade options for mine. Ive heard these things suck anyway....

Okay, short story is that obviously anyone can call up Tom Woods or equivalent and get a double cardan 1310 driveshaft and pinion yoke, but I'm wondering if there are cheaper options that have been used successfully?

My thought was to get a stock double cardan d-shaft from another rig (say a wagoneer) that has 1310 u-joints, then shorten it and get an adapter flange to go from the 1310 to the pinion yoke on the D30. Another way to go would be to get a standard 1310 pinion yoke for the D30, since that would probably gain another inch or so of d-shaft length....

I figure $20 for a new pinion yoke and straps, $80 for shortening whatever i bring them and ballancing it at a shop, and if I want, another $40-50 to rebuilt it with new u-joints and all that jazz. So ino ther words, for under $200, I could have a rebuit double cardan driveshaft, with new spicer 1310 u-joints in the rig.....

Any thoughts on this?

Why not get a stock 1310 double cardan front shaft from a ZJ that had one instead of looking for some other vehicle and having it cut to size?

didn't know they ever came with them. What years/options?

I know '93-'95 for sure ('95 or '96 might have been V8 only or vice versa) and then I think after than they were all the ball in cage CV type.

Okay, I've got a 95 V8 model and it's double cardan 1310 u-joints on the t-case side, but the slip yoke/pinion side apears to be a CV joint, just like the broken down 97 that's also sitting at my house....

Pretty sure dave's 95 also had a CV unit since I recall him saying he went through three of them stock  Not sure if dave has a 5.2L or 4.0L but if he's 5.2 then it might be the 4.0s that have the non-cv joints....

All the 242 Tcase ZJ's have the Dshaft your looking for.

Personally I am running a XJ front shaft. No troubles. Infact it was suspiciously the same leangth as my old Stock shaft.

In other words get a XJ front shaft and a pinion yoke. install, enjoy.

...when i did my 231 swap, i had the xj it came out of in the shop. In the middle of doing the swap i layed both front and rear DS along side eachother and the ZJ DS's were both about 2-3" longer than the XJ DS's. The XJ was a 95 4.0l auto btw.

maybe certain tcases came with different DS's :dunno:

The differences lie in the 46rh and re transmissions are longer ~3" or so. Anyone with 93-95 v8 or a 5.9 has different shafts

Yeah. My 231 and TW driveshafts came out of a ZJ with a 42RE and the front driveshaft is about 6 inches too short on my ZJ with the 46RH. My front axle is about 3" farther forward then the vehicle the shaft came from so yeah, about 3" difference.
