View Full Version : Chalupa gets a bumper!

Corey and I spent most of this weekend building a bumper for the Chalupa. We basically both wanted the same things out of a bumper, so I figured the Chalupa would be a good guinea pig before we do it to mine! It's not completely done yet, still have a couple more things to do to it that should be SWEET, along with painting and the final grinding work, but the bumper itself is mostly done. Here's some pics.

Took basically everything off the front end:

Mocking up the winch mount and where the winch will sit:
http://www.mallcrawlin.com/pics/chalupabumper/82104%20047.jpg

Welded the frame rails together here for a little added strength:
http://www.mallcrawlin.com/pics/chalupabumper/chalupabumper%20001.jpg

Looked like it was gonna rain, so I had to put a tarp over my ZJ to keep the interior from getting soaked (no doors right now), check out grandpa in the background!

Test fitting the front plate:

Welding up the bumper:

More welding, Scott watching:

Stinger and everything in place:

I didn't really get any pics of the mounting system, but it kind of goes together with Kevin's radiator support. There a side piece to the bumper that slides in the frame rail and it all bolts together in there. 8 bolts per side IIRC. 2 top, 4 side, 2 bottom. It's pretty stout. The bumper is not welded to the Jeep itself at all, just bolted in. Sooner or later we'll be doing something very similar to my ZJ.

Forgot to mention, while I was drilling the air holes in the front plate, Corey's drill decided to catch on fire, and that caught my shirt on fire, and now I have a super cool burn mark on my stomach!

I tried washing it off, and got some of it, but I think some of it is actually charred skin. It's pretty sweet. It doesnt hurt at all, I still have feeling there, and there's no open wound so I figure I'm good.

In some instances, but also with ZJ buggy's the ass end is really light and they can at least help in keeping it from endo'ing.

Yea, known people to almost go over, hit their stinger, and then throttle out on their front two wheels

If you do roll they can protect the radiator most of the time too.....

Dave - you guys planning on putting lights and crap back on that thing or is it going full buggy, street be damned?

It still needs some sort of lights. We're not sure how much of the factory stuff we'll be able to use after we finish up a few other things, but the idea is to have some sort of street-legal light setup on it.

hey dave i would love to see how you make that street legal.

that or maybe my canadian laws are really sticky cause that would never pass. my front bumper is on the fine line between legal and illegal.

I've never had problems before. All's I need to do is get some lights back on it and I'll be good to go!

BTW, Brentt.....LOL!

yea, really depends on your locality. Here, if you've got a working light front and rear and at least three tires that hold air, the cops don't really care

Not to mention the Chalupa actually has to make it out of the backyard and on to a street before really worrying about it being street legal!!!!!

Yea Corey I have to agree that shit is coming from the guy who's Jeep is on the trailer in your aviator because it broke down on the country road leading to Twin Cone. He should give his recovery team a little more respect.

At least mine's made it to a trail this year! And I haven't broken anything on my Jeep pulling it off the trailer!! :D

Corey, did you keep the windshield? If I want to keep it legal, I need to mount a windshield. Still trying to figure that one out, but I'm thinking speed glass on a custom mount.

Jason, stock windshield and frame. Cut the top off about 3-4" behind the top of the windshield. You are able to do that when you start with an unwrecked vehicle. LOL!

If your WS frame is shot, I would probably just build the cage such that you can affix the speed glass directly to it.

If it's doable I think the plan is to cut the stock grill around the winch.

FYI, I saw a "chalupa" copy DRIVING down 80 on the way back to CO. It was just like the chalupa. You ever see one or hear of one around the bay area like that?

Nate, were you going back to CO around Aug 13th? I'm from NorCal and I was in the Rubicon that weekend which is when you might have seen my Jeep on HWY 80. Here are a few photos of the jeep and my similar front bumper deal. The front bumper has a similar plate welded to the inside of each rail as well as the one you see on the outside.

The Chalupa is bad ass, but stingers are still gay and useless. I don't think a stinger would help in an endo----once you roll far enough to bring the stinger in contact, your tires are already off the ground.

Call it what it is, good protection for the radiator and engine in the event of a solid roll. I need something like that because I always worry about destroying my motor.

Cody, I'll leave the endoing to you! LOL! I didn't really put it on there to keep from endoing. If it does keep me from completely endoing, great. I think if anything it probably would make me endo onto my side if anything. I personally like the looks of them and did it more for the possible pushing up onto rocks sort of thing. Plus it should keep the hood from caving in in the event of a roll.

Yeah, I mean, they have their purpose. Some people think they are some cure all for an endo. It 'may' keep you from endoing, but chances it it just pitches you onto your side (and off a cliff ;) ). If a rig as heavy as ours endoed it would take more than eighth walled dom to keep it from going over I think.

They do keep you from destroying your front clip and they do help nose up on things. If built right, they have a purpose--I think I will be sportin something similar before too long. I'm about to go into self-preservation mode-----I don't have the money or skill to go to a buggy right now, but I know my rig needs some bomb proofing to surving another year of wheelin. I'm not getting any easy on her. :D

BTW, as it sits right now, it's simply for looks. It's not finished yet. It has no bracing, so even if I did endo right now, it would probably just bend or break into the hood. I mainly was building the bumper so I could mount the winch and get some tow points.

Do you plan on closing in the sides (out to fenders)?

I had that look (without the stinger) going for a while, but I finally finished up the sides with some 1/8th sheet out to the corners, and then back to the fender lip.

Dang I need to unload some pics off of my camera so I can get some stuff written up.

Brentt, The wheels are 11" +/- (10 or 12" wheels with beadlocks added) with 2-3" back spacing! Some help I am, huh? :flipoff2:

I bought them used for $100 and they fit, so I haven't really cared about measuring them.
