You can move this to Members Rides if you want, just thought I could show off more here in General. :D

Finally got my ZJ working again, the swap is finished. Minor details to take care of like lengthening of the front driveshaft and some other little quirks. Swaybar and SS are now hooked up as well. The details:

-'94 ZJ V8 Limited, Flowmaster exhaust
-37"x12.5" Goodyear MT/Rs, 15"x8" Bling Bling rims
-Claytons 4-link Long Arms w/ RE 4.5" springs and 2" BB
-Bilstein 5150 shocks, 29" front, 26.7" rear
-Addco swaybar, JKS Disconnects, JKS trackbar
-HP44 from 1977 F150: Chevy flattop knuckle conversion (75 Chevy knuckles, brakes, caliper brackets, spindles), Partsmike histeer arms, custom brackets, 4.56 gears, Lockrite locker
-HD 1 ton Chevy steering with 1.375"x.188" DOM tubing
-Ford 31 spline 9" from 1977 F150: Custom brackets, 4.56 gears, Detroit locker
-231J from '97 TJ with AA SYE
-Tom Woods custom CV driveshafts front and rear

Things that still need to be done:
-cut out rockers
-bolt up skids
-weld bumpers
-install stereo
-install winch

Just thought I would share. Despite the steering angles being a little off, she has no bumpsteer and doesnt drive half bad even without an alignment.

Yes, very nice!

Can I ask you how the 4.56 are with the 37s?
I want to go with probably a 36 tire, and was thinking about 4.88s.

BTW: Thanks for your long PM about claytons on NAGCA, helped my quite a lot with my decision.

Hey. Originally I was going to run 4.88s or 5.13s but I decided 5.13s were to much for the D44. Im moving to alloy shafts and CTM u-joints very soon and I was afraid that that would move to much stress to the ring and pinion; especially with the V8 and all the weight a ZJ has. But then I came upon a built 9" 3rd member that had a Detroit and 4.56 gears for $400, and considering my Detroit alone had cost me $400, then add $200 for gears and installation kit, then $100 for gear setup...it seemed like a good choice. I was also trying to make GSW.

Anyways, the 4.56s feel fine. I havent put many high speed highway miles on them yet but in town there is way more power and the transmission acts a lot better (doesnt kick into overdrive all the time). Ideally I'd like 4.88s but I dont think it will be bad and itll give me a couple extra mpg on flat highway. I have a Mopar ECU, intake, exhaust and Im doing a couple other power mods so hopefully they can take up the slack.

Looks good. Time to trim that rear bumper! Looks like it would rub alot?

I havent trimmed anything yet. ive got a full pack of new consumables for the plasma torch; shes gonna get a lot of use over the next week. everything metal in front of the front wheel is getting cut out and plate welded in. everything behind the rear wheel gets the same thing. the bumper is getting removed, so i didnt bother trimming it. swing out tire carrier/bumper is in progress, done in the next month or 2...

nice looking rig man.

Does your 77 D44 have the 297/760 series u-joints or those 560s (or whatever they are) like the CJs? I think the switch to the larger u-joints and shafts was around then, just curious.....

came with 297s, I put in some new 760s. Pretty sure the switch was like 74 or 75, maybe 76 when they went to disc brakes. but like I said above, Im putting in alloy shafts and CTMs very soon. I might take out the Lockrite until I do that. Or Im going to check out that D60 conversion. Something about a 35 spline ARB, 60 shafts and 60 u-joints; can you say drool?

PS. I think Ill weld up the rest of my caps for now. one of my ears is bent so I had to TIG the cap since I could not get one of the snaprings in. Seemed to work pretty darn well, plenty of grease left.

Max,
It "looks" good, but thats stupid tall with 37"s. in the pic with the Driver tire flexed up, the body is wayyy to the right... add off camber=flop for sure.

For those who have not seen it in person, GoingOffRoading's ZJ (Black one in the pics) is HUGE TALL. 8" SJ up front.

Id be really leary about being that tall and floping now... IMO.

I dunno why it looks so tall, its just RE 4.5" springs and a 2" BB, I didnt raise the spring perches in the front and only a 1/2" in the rear. The axles tubes are wider but thats only like 1/4" difference. You cut the D30 spring perches out yourself (thanks again). But the 37s do look a good bit bigger then Chase's 35s. I need to install a rear swaybar and get new shorter limit straps. With the

Oh, and the driver side front tire was bottoming out on the body (where the bumper used to attach), so thats why the front is not flexing and making the rear do all the work. http://www.fototime.com/{130A0649-6407-4AB8-B3A0-778C2A996C24}/picture.GIF

PS. I drove home to Santa Cruz today totally laden with heavy shit. 70mph the whole way (except for highway 17). I didnt get it aligned. No bumpsteer but I need to adjust the pinion angle a little. Had some vibes over 70. Oh and the front wheels arent even balanced. Was smooth!

You got some Balls driving down 17 without ever getting an Alignment on LA'ed ZJ on 37"s. DAMN.

Also didnt know those were 4.5" & 2" Pucks, those 37"s are huge !

I do have the isolaters up front. I think I'll take those out so it will drop the front a little. They were like pressed on there so I didnt bother removing them.

Oh, and HWY17 was very chill. The ZJ confidently goes the speed limit on it and easily goes above. No wandering, maybe just a tiny tiny bit of correction. The Addco swaybar really evens things out. With a rear bar I expect itll be much better. But 4.56 gears and 37s wasnt too great going up the long steep hill. I could easily keep my speed, but accelerating to pass someone wasn't too easy. However I was loaded with the equivalent weight of a couple bumpers.

But the craziest thing is, I got about 18mpg average on the trip. Not done with the overhead, but I do have a 35" tire speedo. The trip is 80 miles exactly, and I used 4.5 gallons of gas. Thats $10 of gas around here. Im confused...

Damn, thats better than my almost stock V8 DD.... :x

you guys also gotta remember... 37" spare on the back, steel bumpers front and rear, the rocker protection, my exhaust/transfer case skid (3/16" plate), and the winch up front. Then add the tools I carry for wheeling... Gonna drop it down a little.

Raacerx, "get r done"! I'm going to the Rubicon on the weekend of Sept 24th with a few rigs. If you are free that weekend you should come with. It would be fun to get a few ZJs together... kinda a mini Grand Slam Rubicon.

Definitely Northern, I'd love too. I really only need to cut out my rockers (got the steel), lengthen the front driveshaft (doesnt even fit anymore), and come up with some sort of front tow point. Its gonna take me awhile to finish my bumpers since school has started again, so I think I'll fab a temporary fugly front bumper to hold the winch and some tow points and just keep the rear hitch for a rear tow.

My only other concern is that Im still on stock shafts and 760 u-joints with 37s and the V8. Theres no way Ill have my alloys and ctms before the end of September, so would it be a good idea to remove the Lockrite until I get that taken care of? Im just worried Im gonna snap an ear off like 100 feet into the trail.

Sweet! Send the front shaft to High Angle Drive line in Paradise. They are right next to Chico and all the guys are real good people. Jesse did the front and rear shafts on my jeep and I can speak for the quality of their work.

As to all the fab work you've got left to do you should be cool with just rockers and tow points. I really wouldn't worry about the winch if you don't get time. There will be a few rigs and somebody to pull you out if you get stuck.

I wouldn't worry about the 760s. Tack weld the caps in place and bring a spare joint. I'll keep you posted on details via email or PMs. I've got class on Friday 'till 2pm so I'll be getting there at about Dark. We normally camp on the Wentworth Springs enterance and 'wheel though the old side to the main trail.
