....dumb questions too

231 - what are the donor jeeps for this? anyone got any ID advice? I realize I need a 95 or newer (due to the gear cut) and it should be standard on YJs, TJs, XJs after that date, but are there any other t-cases that were offered on these rigs? 242s? is it only 4.0 rigs with them or do 2.5s have them too?

8.8 - models that it's available on? I gather that V6 rangers and exploders have them, but what years? also, easy ID methods? do they have a different way of showing gear ratio other than the usual tag on the diff cover? (I need 3.73s)

I'm going to start hitting the junk yards looking for suitable electric fans I can snag for the ZJ and SJ, but I want to keep an eye out for the above items too....

thanks for the help and sorry for the newb post

okay - know how to ID now - http://www.coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml

follow up question - how does an 8.8 compare to a D44 in strength?

okay, answering more of my question:

8.8s came on 5.0L mustangs starting in 86, 91-01 explorers, and rangers to name a few.

the mustang and ranger 8.8s are 28 spline though. The explorer ones are 31 spline and the right length.

91-94 explorers seem to have 31 splines and drums. 95-01 have discs and still 31 spline and right length. - these are the hot ticket......

as for d44 vs 8.8 - it sounds like the D44 has stronger axle tubes, but the 8.8 has 31 vs 30 spline shafts and a bigger pinion.....
