i was told that 44s out of 78 broncos are different lengths than other 44s and the only spare shafts i could get would have to be out of another 78. i'm thinking this is incorrect but figured i would ask.

well, mostly right.. the stub shafts are the same on most D44s, but the short and long shafts are pretty much different length in every damn axle out there.

Now as far as donors, similar vintage broncos should have them, so 78-82 or whatever that year was they stopped the full size bronco in favor of the bronco II. Even if you broke an axle and couldn't find a replacement, currie, mossler and some other folks will make one for you for a pretty reasonable amount.

I blew a front u-joint on my wags D44HD and of course it took the ears with it, I had a replacement lined up from another IFSJA member in state in less than a week for $50 for the pair or something like that. Don't sweat it, if you break it, you can deal with it then.....
