Been looking at the 231 swap to get rid of the shitty 249 in my 95, but wondering if there's anything cheaper and easier to do? what about a 242 or a newer 249 w/o the VC in 4LO? other options? I really want to have something that's cake to install and cheap, that's what I'm after. Can't afford to throw a lot of money at this right now, freakin' in-debt up to my eye balls.....anyway, really just want to eliminate the VC in 4LO, since mine is shot, better gearing, durability and 2wd are gravy, but not my main concern. Any thoughts?

The easiest swaps would be either a 242, a 231, or the new rock-track 241-J (out of the Rubicons).

One of the recent Petersen's has a writeup on swapping the 241-J into a Cherokee. I would imagine it would be pretty similar for us, and not too terribly involved.

In terms of cheapest, you could probably find a 242 or 231 in a junkyard for a pretty reasonable price (4-500 bucks).

If you're looking to buy new OEM stuff - I'd say you'd be best off getting the 241-J since you'll be getting 4 to 1 low range for cheaper than a 4 to 1 conversion in a 231 (not even considering all of the labor involved in the 231 rebuild), and stronger to boot. Edit: Just checked the 241-J price from Advance Adapters: http://eshop.advanceadapters.com/commerce/catalog/product.jsp?product_id=2532
$1,980 is still a little rich for my blood  , so I guess I'll go back to suggesting a 231 or 242

just curiouse, why would you not want to run the 242 or the 231? i mean you can flip a d300 and convert to twin sticks and the whole shibang, but i'm just wondering why not the 231. i have broken numerouse 35c and 30 parts aswell as drive shafts and u-joints and have yet to rattle my 231.

Like was mentioned you can easily swap in a 242..
Like this....
http://jeephorizons.com/tech/tcase.html

But I destroyed that 242 the second time I went out.. I subsequently bought a 231D (dodge Truck case) and it has been fine.. SOooo I agree with Kraqa.. go with a 231.. Its much easier to work on and very strong...

242 is complicated and the dual planetary setup that allows it to work in fulltime.. Only makes it more difficult to work on..

Good luck..

203 and D300 fit like a glove. You only have to remove most of the floor.

ROTFLOL  well, considering that and the compexities mentioned with the 242, looks like I'm back to a 231....thanks guys, just thought I'd ask...

The complexities with a 242 are mostly in how it's internals operate- not in the swap.

Go with a 205 8)

yea, but i'm expecting to have to rebuild whatever I get, so I guess it's a factor. We've put over 40k miles on this pile this last year alone! gotta keep it reliable.....well, as reliable as a Heep can be

Is it true that the 231 is actually a little bit longer than a 242? I'm still trying to figure out which case I want to swap in. I could have picked up a 231 for 150 bucks a little while back, but for some reason I was under the impression that it would be more complicated to do the 231 swap and might require that the driveshaft be shortened as a result.
