Go for it.. Mine is still running strong and its been a long time..
It has also been completly under water at least 20 times..

And I also ran my rig off into a canal...(dont ask..) and I disconnected the fuel line and hooked the pump straight up to the battery and used the pump to pump the full tank of water gas mix out .. Only took about an hour..:smt003
I thought for sure that would kill the pump but it is still going strong..

I see you got those canister pics added, cool. Mine has been doing just fine too. I got my pump through NAPA. Another thing worth mentioning is lube the seal on the canister. Mine didn't seal right, 'cause I didn't and it rolled or pinched or something wrong.

Alot of people mention the whine, think something is wrong. I tell 'em it's the super fuel injection.

Just to be well prepared for the day "X"...

...I want to cut the access hole in the floor in advance!

If somebody could tell the exact location and dia of the necessary access hole, that would prevent me from jigsaw a 20"x20" hole in the back of my Grand...:D

Thanks a lot men!

I don't know if you've went ahead and done it yet but...I personally wouldn't go for the one big hole approach way too much stuff down there. As for a starting point 17.5" from the drivers side trim and 13" from the tailgate trim puts you in a much safer spot than 18" and 18". 18" and 18" put me right in the middle of all the hoses... Don't forget there is a pressure relief hose in there as well! I was happily cutting around everything I could see before a pressure relief hose snuck up from no where (as it was trucked right up against the floor) and got in the way of my rotozip...oops.

Here's some pics I got when I did mine: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/494992/7

I used the starting point swampy provided in his write-up. I had no problem with hoses. I decided to use the angle grinder instead of the sawzall and never even thought of the rotozip.

Another tip for the pickup screen. Clean it with carb cleaner spray. Use the whole can. The screen should come out looking almost new.

In my previous post about the canister seal, i'm talking about the seal between the tank and the canister before you put the locking ring on. I used a real light coat of wheelbearing grease on the seal.

I had a leak the first fillup after doing the job because it didn't seal right. Happened in the lot at work. Fixed it in the lot. I figured somebody was going to call 911.

How hot do these pumps run? since they aren't submerged in fuel anymore as intended? not that it seems to be a problem if they keep running, the flow of fuel through the pump must be enough to cool it. When mine dies, i'll most likely take this approach, I hate dropping fuel tanks.

The external pumps were never "intended" to be submerged in fuel for cooling.

I must have misread, i thought they were using the pump from inside the tank, just mounting it on the frame rail.... but now I see that they are using a different pump, makes more sense. durr, shoot me. my bad.

Yup, old thread. For those of us that have the top of the tank readily accessible, what advantage is there in doing this besides saving about $70-80 from the stock fuel pump?

i know its a late reply but you can move the inline pump after the filter so the gas going into the pump is filtered. thats pretty much it.
