Here's my front bumper, it's not a very good pic of it but it is the only one I could find right now. It is a spin off of Alaska ZJ's bumper and no I didn't build it, I have never even learned to weld. I'm sure there are better looking ones out there but for the price I couldn't have asked for more. :D

That's about the best armorall ad I've ever seen.

Love the bumper though. Do you have some specs on it? That's about perfect for my application and I really would like to duplicate :D or at least base my bumper off that one.

Built the winch box first, mounts using the stock tow hook plate that the nutt are welded onto (but not the two hook brackets), also mounts thru front metal "bumper" (perpendicular to the stock tow hook plates), got the bends by scoring the metal, bending it via a press and then re-welding the backside.

Are there any "in process" pics of these bumpers? I want to see the backsides and mounting.

Some of them look like plate cut into funky shapes and welded back together, are these ones braced in back?

waterjet/plasma is cool and all, but all I have an angle grinder and a bandsaw.

this isn't even a bumper, more like a winch mount.

did you lower that stock bumper? i am definatly going to cut those oval holes out so i can fit a 2x(6?) piece in there and bolt it from the radiator suppor bolts on the bottom in that hole, and any edge i can get through the frame rail, and to the front of the factory... for 2 points on the front edge anyways... prlly more points twoards the edge if i can find them, i want to be able to knock over an 8" tree easy, MI is all woods :) well mostly  trees

chad i like yours best so far... but,, ,wouldnt 2x6 be stonger than putting 2x4 in that round hole. i mean cut it out so the framerail is on all sides? and how did you get it to mount to the framerail? was i wrong in assuming i ccould do it from the side? i was just looking and im not sure how i would do that....

Here is a rear photo of my jeep. I really love this little truck bed and as you can see it has been really handy durring the build to hold tools and shop towels! The gas tank will be mounted in the back for a little while. I'm hoping to fab a custom tank to hide somewhere. Anyway. It is a 2x4 welded to the back frame rails and sheet metal lip. There are some 2x2 runners into the rear uni-body x-member. The jeep is cut off flat right behind the gas filler area. I've got the rebulid mostly done now just driveshafts and prep + paint + hurculiner interior.

yeah, thats something i was also wondering, it seems that you would want to at least put a tac on there to make installation easier... is that the way to go? template and weld the bolts on the inside then insert and bolt up?

KevinM
07-17-2004, 08:19 PM
Yeah, I welded the HELL out of those nuts. If one broke loose I would be in a "world of shit".

What I did for that mount was take a 2x6 piece of cardboard, and use it as a template to cut the mounts. Then mount up the main bumper piece, get it positioned right and level. I drilled holes in the mount through the existing factory holes, which are there for the tow points I think. I then drilled holes through the frame rail and into the mount. I have 6 holes on each side. Welded grade 8 nuts inside the mount and used fender washers under grade 8 washers on the frame side.

so what do you think about oooooo.... so thats why your piece of steel that goes into the frame rail is not square tube anymore... you cut off the side of it so you could weld the nuts in... i see... well what baout running the bolts from inside to outside of the FR? or doesnt that make any sense? cuz then you could tighten them down if they got loose, if they go loose now you wont be able to get to them right? or would you have to take the whole bumper off and reweld the nuts?

thanks for the good info here keep it comin :thumb:

i was in the same boat as you, get some scrap and just start making beads cut it up and make something neat just "artwork" whatver do as many welds as you can on a 20$ sheet of shit and thats how you learn, cut and weld,...

not sure if what i have is the best idea but it works. I dont' have a bumper, but it mounts somewhat like the above bumpers. Sorry about the suspense, what i'm running is a set of shackle mounts, with a hitch in between. here's the final product:

http://www.tcnj.edu/~macock2/stuff/pines/pines23.jpg

IIRC it's a pice of 2X3X1/4 slid into the "frame" rail. it uses the existing bolts and one aditional on each side i believe and to secure the bolts the tubing was just drilled and tapped. seems to work just fine. i can get shots of the mounts if you would like.

so you only have 2 1/4" pices slid in there.. and then just welds on the ends of it? just 1/2" total going into the frame rail? interesting

chopshop
07-18-2004, 07:35 PM
just 1/2" total going into the frame rail?

? there are four bolts there on the side view, the 1/4" goes past that.

That way you wouldn't have to mess around with the rad support bolts. Leave them stock. And it would be easier to level/line up the front part of the bumper during construction.

Alaska ZJ
07-18-2004, 08:56 PM
Yep that is how I have done it. I have hung the entire ZJ off that bumper more times than I can count. I hit a tree doing 10 mph or so (dumb manuever don't ask). didn't budge at all.

Chad's rear bumper is the coolest ZJ bumper I've seen!

Seriously, I copied his design like the punk bitch I am, and I get more comments on it than anything else I've done to the ZJ. The only differences between his and mine are:

I used 2x2x.25 box for the frame rail mounts (not sure what thickness he used)
2x4x.25 for the bumper - did this bacause I integrated tow points and a receiver into the bumper.
No swing away tire carrier - I want one, but I have a problem with Carolina pines. They seem to jump into my way when I put the jeep in reverse. Maybe if I can figure out something that could take a hit I'll build one.

On my unfinished front bumper, I have a Warn winch mount that I cut up and modified the frame mounts on. I took 2x4x.25 tubing and cut it in half on a diagonal (making two pieces of 2x4 angle) Then I notched the frame rails, slid the angle pieces in, and marked my holes. I drilled two holes in the bottom of the frame rail, marked those, drilled them on the angle pieces, tacked on the nuts and tightened them down in place in the frame rail. That way they were cinched down in place before the four side holes were marked. I ended up with a little less material than I wanted for the very top hole on the frame rail, so I only used 3 on each side, and two up from the bottom on each side.

Now I just need to trim some stuff off the front end, and case everything in on each side with 1/8 sheet. I'll post a pic of the front when I'm done with it.

what about viewing out the rear window, isn't the tire gonna sit dead center? or is it low enough...if it's low enough not to impair vision, won't it hit on ledges and things?

Awesome as usual...

I have a question for you on that swing away:
What kind of hinge design is that? It looks to be either the trailer spindle type or a tubing/round bar setup. I just finished up my swing-away (using a rubber bushing for the hinge) and I love it except for the way it sags when you open it. I mean its quiet, it allows enough movement to keep the fatigue levels low, while still keeping it steady and in place on the highway. I was considering the trailer spindle, but I started seeing a lot of failures being reported in the fabricators section on JU (yeah yeah - that's about the only section I visit anymore). With all of the concern w/ single shear vs double shear, material qualities, and effects of heat, I just felt a big bolt through a bushing was my safest bet.

Have you been having good luck with this new setup?

Again, sweet bumper!

JH

chadjans
08-06-2004, 03:05 PM
It is a hinge I sourced from Kevin off road. I beleive he gets them from Toys by Troy. It is not a trailer spindle. Basicly a 2 inch .125 wall tube over a custom machined spindle that has a grease valley and a threaded section that gets welded to the bumper.

That's a bitchin rear bumper.. I like it. I'm in need of some more durable bumpers myself, but all the aftermarket stuff is *SO* expensive. I like the Protofab prerunner style bumper, but I can't bring myself to pay like 600 bucks for some tubing.

Most of this is copied from another post on NAGCA, but it's relevant here...

Just ignore the headlights. They were an experiment gone very wrong.

I knew what I wanted in my front bumper, but I don't have the tools or skills to put one together. So I had my buddy make a stubby bumper for me and couldn't be happier.

This is how it was started -- removed the front crossmember.
http://www.wnyoffroad.org/thegallery/data/media/18/030808_17101.jpg

If you use an air chisel to take out the nutserts at the bottom of the "frame" rail, and grind the tube a bit, you can get 2x5 to fit in there pretty snugly.
http://www.wnyoffroad.org/thegallery/data/media/18/pic041308_1.jpg

I wanted it to be pure function and didn't care about my grill, so the idea was to push the winch back as far as possible and maximize approach angle:
http://www.wnyoffroad.org/thegallery/data/media/18/pic041308_2.jpg

The idea was to make the bumper a single piece that acts as a rad protector, lower rad support, front crossmember and winch mount. The front skid is gusseted for additional strength and ties the crossmember into frame sleeves and the bottom of Kevin's rad support. The side plating is welded to the crossmember around the top of the "frame" rail and welded to the mounting brackets for Kevin's rad support. The sleeves were 3/16" and everything else was 1/4". Eight grade 8 bolts per side are used for mounting. Here is the final product:
http://www.wnyoffroad.org/thegallery/data/media/18/DSC00250.JPG

http://www.wnyoffroad.org/thegallery/data/media/18/rc_rock_creek.JPG

The only downfall I've found so far is that it can be a mud shovel, but it's easy enough to clean out.

And most recently, it's been tied into the tube from the A pillar to the bumper.

Nothing earth-shaking here, but I'll play. 2x3" tube for mounts bolted in single shear for now (gonna change to double), 2x3" tube and some plate for sides, large section cut from 3x6". Timkin bearing ring for trailer plug protector. 1/2" rod bent up for safety chain fixins and step.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm256/geesaw/DSCF0088-1.jpg

What would I change? The sides are a little high, add D-rings, tire carrier (in the works). Now that I tucked the tank 5 1/2", I wish the rear portion was 4", instead of 6" tall.

atl zj copy...except mines 3/16 instead of 1/4inch...sorry for the small pic. design lacks rad protection, but with a kevins style rad support and this bumper, you cant get a better design. no tow points, no time to make them yet. i just strap/winch around the mid section of the bumper. did i mention its only 70 lbs? look at atl zj's build page to see IMO the best most simple design. boxed steel mounts inside the frame rails are a bitch to make but you cant do better for a mount.

Took a lot longer than I guessed it would and still have a bit of work to complete on it. Gonna bend up a bit of 1.25 tubing to protect the radiator support and put some hooks at the ends of the winch, but I think it turned out ok for a first shot.

Mounts sandwich the rails with 3/8 plate and 3/8 extends all the way to the front of the bumper. Used a winch plate as the base which is 1/4, the front plates are 3/16 and the top plates are 1/8.

I have no idea how much more I will play with it before I label it "complete" but for now, it has taken far more energy than I originally thought so I am gonna bang it on a tree or two before I do a lot more to it.

No it doesnt sag at all. I used a hardened 3/4"id bushing welded in the 2"x2" then a pair or hardened 3/4"-9/16" reducer bushings so if it does wear I can just replace those. :supz:

It is close I have a 1/2" rubber bumper between the upright and the handle and the top of the License plate opening. So it actualy just touches the hatch.

All of the lower angled and the outside pieces are 1/4". Tops, back and uppers are 3/16" :D

Fuck! Chad you always make me rethink my plans! Probably for the better though.

My old carrier used a drop in pin as a latch and the rattling drove me nuts! So I used a bolt with a "T" handle that screwd tghrough the swing arm to a nut on the bumper, but it takes a while to unscrew... like 4 seconds. :D

I want to use one of those toggle latches, and also use a drop in hitch pin as a backup/failsafe.

Learn from others mistakes.

1/2 grade 8 cap bolt running horizontal welded to the bumper that goes through the crossmember of the carrier. A piece of rubber between the bumper and the crossmember and a wingnut / t handle to secure (old ujoints and a coupling nut make really cool t handles).

Even cooler is the bumper drilled for the bolt and the hex welded to the backside of the bumper. Adds no height like using the stupid ass latch.

Either way simple and secure.

Chad,
Why do you say you don't trust that type of latch?

Mine has been working fine for the past 4 years. It has even been reformed after getting backed into some rocks out in the White Tanks. And that has been about two years ago.

Because the one I used rated to 2000 lbs fell apart in my hands. A wing nut and bolt work just fine.

Looks good as well. I really don't have the time to mass produce something, so I'd rather spend my spare time using them than building multiples. I think the only way I'd be a part of selling something was if a shop wanted to latch onto them and hired me for some side help and design (and I'm sure that ain't happening). Really, the main reason I post stuff is to hopefully throw my ideas out there for others to grab onto and have a starting point for their own creations, rather than just buying something and bolting it on. For me, its just great to see it does occasionally work.

The sides, tubing, skids and some built-in-lights are to come,

Corners will be rounded like the lights.

Charcoal condenser canister. I tuned mine 90* on its ear, and shoved it up bedind the headlight.

Yep and shorten or reroute em. But I have heard not to cut the hoses shorter than a foot. Dont know why. Heres mine before heard about the length issue.

Runs fine
