LOL, I don't even know what all's on my jeep any more.

Great pics Chad! You forgot to mention "custom parking lot repaired front spider gears" ;)

Is that "flip open tool box" mounted/built in? If so any pics?

How do you like the speed bleeders?

And side gears.

The tool box, I just finished. Alhough it was a project I didn't take any pictures of. I'll get some finished ones.

Speed bleaders are super nice. Open valves, push pedal and close valve. No open close crap.

I have liked that since the first time I saw it. .Great work..

3 Seats.. Are you centering one in the back??? Thats actually what I was planning on doing..

I was going to take out the seats and cover the entire floor with a panel and put in just a single seat in the back.. My daughter rides with me and I want to do what I can to make sure she is safe...

OH yeah... I like the red..

Couple of questions Chad, but first, I love that cage.

Now, did you build the box dimensions for a specific reason? I mean, is there a reason you left a certain amount of space on the sides open or built to that height? (obviously you didn't want to go over the seat backs)

Any specific tools, parts, or recovery gear you had to fit? I ask because I saw the Safari cargo boxes in a Rubicon Express catalog a while back, and loved the idea (just not enough to pay over $600 for it). Then, when I started designing one myself, I ran into all kinds of considerations I never even dreamed of before. (ie where to put a spare axle shaft, what order is the stuff going to go in - biggest first or least used first?, Do I want it to ba all drawer - 1 or 2?, Do I want a hatch towards the back seat?)

Also - How do you like the Power Tank? How much use can you get out of it? Like how many tires can you fill, or can you possibly use air tools? If you could do it again, whould you still go that route or go to a full OBA setup?

Thanks for letting me pick your brain for a minute.

JH

3 seats: 2 front, 1 rear on the pass side. I am going to bob it and tube behind the rear doors, so I'll need tool and spare parts storage so one seat has to go.

Power tank is not a power tank. It is an aluminum tank from marinedepot.com. And a fixed 130 lb regulator. Works great. Fills up tires for three runs and still allows me to use air tools.

Box is built to the dimesions to fit in the area and still open. Cost me on sheet of 1/2" mdf and a day to build. Cheap and effective.

Keep up the good work, Chad. And keep on posting photos of what you are doing. I like the approach you are taking to building your Grand. And I'm continuing to get good ideas from you. So keep on sharing them with us.

I'm even starting to like the all-red interior. Not enough to copy it. So I will be staying with mine. But I am getting used to it. :D

And if anyone has a problem with an all-red interior on a Grand that's as well-built as yours ... then THEY have a problem ... not YOU.

I like the idea of the tank... did you save a lot of cash going that direction? And where do you get it filled?

I see one on this site for 220 bucks including the regulator.. seems like a pretty good deal.

Thanks for the kudos Jim. I just question people for their focus on the red interior and not the things that hard work have gone into. Like the bumpers, cage, long arms and all the other crap. People nit pick. I know its the internet, and I am over it. ------> Moving on.

If you like the subtle build so far. Close your eyes for the next stage.... 14b, d60, d300 and TUBE. And I am keeping the red interior dash and some plastic. And just to make you all happy red PRP seats.

 Hey - Don't they make a red Herculiner or Durabak spray in / roll in bed liner?
Hell - it beats black any day of the week - esp if the suns shining.

Anyway - thanks for the cargo box and tank info. I've got another completely unrelated question for you that I came up with last night:

I keep looking at the skid you built for your 8.8 - It seems like its almost a requirement with the big lip on the bottom of the diff. Did you just weld yours to the diff or is it removable? If you could do it again would you do anything differently? I was thinking about just having a piece of plate welded to the bottom of the diff housing (either by preheating and MIGing it, or just paying someone to stick or TIG it on there.)

Is there any benefit to making it bolt-on / removable that I'm missing?

i liek those lights. The roof ty in looks kinda sketchy to me. IS there a plate on the other side? I kwo its not suposed to be a super structural cage moutn but still. That thin sheet metal will eventually tear away from that, over time the roof will flex enough to fatigue on the corners of that plate. I would have used something round to weld to the roof. At least it makes it harder for a crack or tear to form.

It is just there to keep the roof from flaping around in the wind. Not structural at all.

Got the front turn signal harnesses done. The ground on the rear running lamps becoming disconnected accidently threw me for a loop. Thought the new bulbs I am using wouldn't work. Ended up removing the factory splices to simplify the wiring and shortened it up a bit. They turned out really nice. Also had to add a ground wire since the new housings are self grounded.

They worked before I hard mounted them and introduced my ground fault issues. Two of the three bulbs are the same size as the OEM setup. Just the major turn blink bulb is smaller. I am thinking I may have to go with the two bulb version of the same housing of this light. You use the single or two bulb versions?

I thought you were cutting out the rockers and making new ones? also I can understand how you tie the roof to the cage to keep that sheet metal from flapping around on the road but why the pillars also? it doesn't look to be anything structural. also why not tie the cage in by going through the floor and to the base of the sliders?

Nope. Too much to loose. Meaning the rockers are pretty strong as is. When cut out and not replaced right they fold up like tin cans. Look at Clayton's roll on Adam's DVD.

Who knows. The seat belt ones were originally put there during the build of the cage. I know the a piler tie in really helped though.

Cage goes through the floor and is tied into the rock sliders and frame rail sleaves which are both welded in.

i can second the folding rockers. my first cut outs did that. but my second attempt whith the cage works VERY well.

i dont' liek the crazy hoops comming otu of the doors but it might look better in person. Around here those things will get cause on tons of stumps and trees. i guess not so much on the rocks. but hey, here douve noze really helps. so to each there own.

i think fenderless looks way better IMO. And i can see where yoru goign with the front tube lines. i'l bet the fenders mount of that crazy hoop you put in from the a pillar.

VERY cool work Chad! Puma's on crack...i don't see that getting caught up on much at all unless you're trying to fit that jeep in places that it really doesn't belong or it's almost laying on its side. And I'm looking at Puma's rig right now in the MC calendar and his rockrails look like they'd hang up on a lot more stuff than any part of your cage.

The door-bars look to me like they protect the B and C pillars and do so while still allowing you to get in and out of the seats relatively easily. Plus they look like they'd keep the interior cage behind the front seats from folding in half if you had a very hard rollover. I seriously like it a lot...as long as your seats are bolted down really well I think i'd feel pretty damn safe in that thing.

Not sure how much more you have planned, but have you thought about putting a bar that goes from about 2/3 of the way back on the front fender-bars down on an angle to somewhere near the front of the rockrails? And possibly one that sits just below where the back-side windows used to be that extends from the back-seat door-bar to the back of the jeep (probably to where you might put a bumper?) to protect the rear quarters. Just a thought....i'm sure you've already considered those already though and are either planning on adding them or have reasons not to add them.

Keep it up...looks super cool and original.

-Ron-

BTW...you need to cut your grass in your yard!

chadjans

Puma is always on crack.... Won't know till I start wheeling it. The seat frames are welded and bolted in. There doesn't seem to be any movement in them. It was a tight fit, for they are wider than stock seats and there is some tranny hump clearence issues. They are a little tall but they will have to do.

There will be some more tube in the front, just not sure where yet though. I am placing an order for more tube to be delivered Friday for the MLK weekend. Not sure what will be bent. No tube is planned for the rear 1/4 yet because I will be cutting directly behind the C piler following the same lines of the piler vertically. I will be shortening up the rig and decreasing the overhang. Probably won't be till after GSSW.

I don't see any fing grass. Grass is for the east. Thanks all for the kudos.

i don't think it "overbuilt" since its getting hacked up and no more doors or liftgate it needs more structural. most people dont' realize how much these things flex untill you get right in to the structure of them. I think it looks so busy is because he is putting tube aroudn existing sheet metal. if the B and C pilars were removed it woudl probably look alot cleaner and be easier to run your tube.

Existing cage doesn't match the sheet metal lines. If I cut the existing sheet metal the existing cage would look worse. Since I am not redoing the entire cage this will have to do. Doors and tailgate don't do shit for structure, The structure that they do provide come from two hinges each and latches to a 1/4" pin. Things bend.

I guess I should say neither the doors nor the latch and pins do nothing for structure. I would have to say my door bar tubes add more structure than the sheet metal doors, hinges and pins.

Chad the build looks good. But Ive got a question, why not cut the rockers out and well your sliders in there? You can tie your cage in with some stringers to the uniframe (which Im sure yours is all re-inforced) Heres a crude drawing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't cut out the rockers because I don't think there is much to gain. It was easier to tuck the sliderz to the pinch seam and run some kickers into the existing cage. The cage 4x2 box feet are also already welded to the pinch seam. So I guess I took the lazy way out but I just want to get this done and go wheeling.

Uh, not sure how you would come to that conclusion. The lap belts go to the floor in all locations front and rear. The shoulder belts go to the shoulder harness bar behind the seat. Although, I have seen shoulder belts bolted to the floor, only after the wrap behind the shoulder harness bar, changing the approach. That is how Cody's were done.

Well condsidering I gained two inches of lift by removing all the doors and it hasn't seatled back down two inches with all the new tube I sumize that it is lighter.

And the new seats are WAY WAY lighter. It is also very light in the back. I did a few burnouts the other day. I will be relocating the battery to the back also.

I won't use a seat that wasn't originally designed to be used with harnesses. When you roll hard (and you eventually will) the soft seats compress then spring you back into the belts/harness. Trust me on this one, it sucks. If you take the time/money/effort into building a safe roll cage, why put seats in it that can potentially cause you more harm if you roll?

Even the cheap hard plastic seats with seat covers aren't that uncomfortable. I used to sit in them for 10 hours a day and never felt uncomfortable.

lol, what? Come on Chad, you don't need to resort to heresay.

Kinda like what happened to Standage (at least I think it was Standage)when he came off of the Matterhorn and compressed 2 of his vertabrae rendering him unconcscious. But he was in a suspension seat....just like Ryan Goeller and Parker Garret were knocked unconcscious and had back injuries on the same obstacle----also with nice suspension seats. I was within 10 feet of both of those rigs when it happend. I'm deffinatly not saying a hard seat is better than a suspension seat cause it's not, but I am saying that if you're rolling hard enough to shove your fuckin spine into your brain, then it's probably going to happen even if you're sitting on a bag full of swedish albino dove feathers.

I've rolled in all three types of seats so I'm just speaking from experience, not heresay. A good suspension seat is ideal, but my skull cavity will take it's chances with the hard seat and seat covers as opposed to a stock seat out of some other vehicle. If you can't afford a nice suspension seat then at least spring for a different aftermarket seat that is designed for harnesses. Keep you harness tight (like you can't get your head even close to the steering wheel or roof) when you're attempting anything that could get ugly (ya it sucks but so does death). If you have your harnesses propperly fastened on a nice cushy Caddilac seat then when you slam into the ground it's going to give you whiplash.

Are you going to trailer that rig around and actually wheel it or is it going to just get worked on all the time? I think it'll be a fun rig for you to start doing some more cool stuff in--and you have Brian to pull you out if you get stuck ;) ;)

Got a new trailer. My last two weekends I have been doing some things that they don't do when you buy them new. Like painting the underside, wraping the wires, welding on a spare tire carrier, sealing the deck, welding on some D rings, welding on some tail markers and putting in some wheel stops for loading. On to the pics:

How much did the trailer set you back? New or used?

I'm still looking for one myself.

Your not coming to GSW anyways. Work smurk. Dusty I have to go to Europe instead of beating my Jeep on the rocks...

I should have bought a two car trailer to tow Halfdoc's rig to GSW.

I was convinced to keep the cowl bar simple. So two 90* and a center vertical, that was scrap laying on the shop floor the dash and windshield area is done. Was also convinced to add yet more tube to the fender areas. Have to add one more vertical.

After GSW I found out I couldn't stand where I put the door bars. So I spent the weekend moving them and getting rid of a few pieces of redundant tube. Also got rid of the rear seat. Don't think I need it for I could use the storage more. I think I will build a big basket back there...

ya he did some freekin amazing work on his rig. don't even try to ask me how he did it. I would never try that. although i'v taken my doors off and never put them back on even when i was wheelin in the rain so door bars are commign up and that means the B pillars are comming off and ...........possibly.....possibly the windsheild.

For guages I am going to use the Autometer roll cage mount guage pods. And for the tach I found a clamp that also allows one to use the cage as the dash... All the guages will be mounted to the cowl spreader.

After moving in my door bars I am really glad I did. Makes things look much simplier and narrows it ALOT. Maybe some day I wll redo the rockers.

Going to try and start bobbing on Tuesday.

Just got an emissons test Friday. Boy was that fun pulling up into line with the rig. Flat tires, no sway bars, doors or windshield.

Narrowed the front bumper more. I think it help a lot with the looks of it. It also strengthened the corner where the fender kicker meets the bumper. I ended up stacking two 3/16" plates and a piece of 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 3/16" tube on the back of whats left of the 2" x 4."

Anyone see what is wrong with the front axle? Other than it being a D30.

Added a "Poopy Pipe" or a nipple pipe or whatever the hell Kris called it....

And my Blue Torch fuel cell ring came. Ordered the cell and it is on a three to six week back order. Called Summit and told them to drop ship from RCI. RCI said, "we take care of our drop ships before back stock orders." Hopefully I see it sometime soon. For I won't start the bobbing until I can get an idea of how the cell cradle will interact with the new frame rails.

Those massive front tires you have are going to rub, you will need to remove more sheetmetal :flipoff2:

all joking aside, it looks good... You've put a ton of work into it and I'm sure it'll pay off. And it's always nice to see the little design changes when you figure out a way to make something work better..

Got an RCI 2151AS. No sump with sender. Have to have the BTF ring welded on along with a block off plate for the sender and a filler neck along with a vent to use the stock filler tube and gas cap. Need to have one in AZ to pass emissions. The cell measures: 18" L x 20" W x 10" H and is 15 gallons in capacity.
