What does everyone use for impact guns around here?
I've got the brand new Ingersol Rand Carbon one. (I work at the dealer so I need a good one) Daaamn does that little bastard ever work wonders. Its got awesome torque. If I cant get a bolt off...flip it to foreward and it'll break the head off :D

Ingersol at home and Mac's version of the Ingersol at work. Wouldn't recommend anything else.

...I'm cheap and broke... I only have the harbor freight "thunder gun"

Haven't found anything yet it hasn't pulled right off though, or broken the head off of if I go forward.

If you're referring to this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=46085, it too, is an Ingersol Rand impact. Mighty fine impact, cheap or not!

Oops, got them mixed up. I meant the Harbor Freight EARTHQUAKE which is a cheaper knock off of the IR thunder gun... Seems to do an excellent job, but I don't expect it to last and take quite as much of a beeting as its "brand name" predescesor...

Dad uses a big Mac in his job, basically holds up to industrial work.
I'm still working on getting an air compressor that has enough air to burp a gun more than twice.
Probably go CP or Mac.

Yup, I'm in the same dilemma. Haven't found a worthy compressor in my price range. I really only have 300 bones or less to spend, so it narrows things down.

Sears Compressor (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&fromAu to=YES&bidsite=CRAFT&pid=00916734000)

Check this one out. I use the same one in my garage, have had for a year and a half or so and it works pretty well. Kinda loud, and it kicks on a little more than I'd like, but for that kind of price I couldn't really find anything better.

Just an FYI - I bought the Campbell Hausfeld 5 horse 20 Gallon compressor kit from Lowes back in June of last year. I've already burnt the thing up. The warranty is still good, so I guess I'll see what kind of service I'll get on the thing, but It shouldn't have given out on me that quickly. The bad thing is I was using it to power a small air chisel - wasn't switching on and off very often at all.

Next time around I'll be going with a belt driven compressor. The recent HF catalog I got had a US general Compressor advertised for $480.

230V - 6.5 Horse, 130 PSI, 60 Gallon, 13 CFM @ 90 PSI (Item # 03848-4UZA)

Pretty good specs for a really reasonable price, but I didn't see any warranty information.

I've had mixed results with my CH stuff - the impact wrench works pretty well, the die grinder I have is good enough, the air chisel is great, I hate the "Iron Force" 3/8 drive air ratchet I bought - it's ok but there's not nearly enough torque. Then again, if they warranty this compressor for me, I'd probably buy their stuff again.

Just some input from a home hobbyist / weekend warrior.

When my dad retired from the steel mill he gave me his 1/2 Ingersol, father-in law gave me his old Dewalt electric. Both work very well.

I got dad's home compressor when he moved to Atlanta, Sears brand that was bought in the mid 70s. Does everything we have needed it to do. I just need to buy or make a longer hose for it so I don't have to wheel it around the garage with me.

Sears has some decent craftsman compressors and Lowes had a Campbell and Hausfeld for $700. Get a two stage. My dad just gave me and 80 gallon sullair called "The Sulley". it was originally three phase but I have since converted it to 220.. That bitch is heavy.

If you are looking for some cheap tools, i bought a 125 piece set from Lowes made by ingersol and rand. it contained air hammer, 1/2 impact, 3/8 ratchet, and a grinder for $89.00.

I use a Porter Cable gun. It's a little cheaper than the IR but does the job.

I've got a few of these
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00 919127000&tab=spe#tablink
Craftsman Companion brand 230ft/lbs @ 4CFM

I also just picked up a:
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00 918874000&tab=spe#tablink
Ingersol Rand 425 ft/lbs @ 4.2 PSI

But now that I have this sitting in my garage:
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00 916870000&subcat=Portable+Tank+Compressors

I need to go out and buy one of those ultra powered impacts for home

I want one of those IR Titaniums. 1000 ft/lbs of torque!

By the way... when you're looking at the specs on impacts, it often gives two numbers for torque. One is like "maximum" torque and the other is something like "Torqe range" which is usually much less than the maximum number. What gives?

Nordic1
02-26-2005, 05:58 PM
Probably air preassure... Max might be at like 150 psi

LouisianaZJ
02-26-2005, 07:32 PM
that is probably sustained torque.

Snap-On... Heaviest of them all, Most Reverse Torque for 1/2" Drives...works where others wont... and constantly breaks shit.

Mac...worthless save your money.

IR... I have like 3 of them, heavy and wide. Hard to get positions are a tough one...

IR Titianiums... LIGHTS of them all, perform VERY well under every day use, ie Dropping sliding. Lots of power from somthing so light.

anything else is pretty much crap, unless your talking nascar tools ; )

I love my SnapOn... it gets it done, now mine has a header on the handle and I use it seldom and I know thats what relieves the torque.

you guys have too much money.

I have a 15 gallon Craftsman compressor (~200 bucks) pushing a CH impact wrench (27 bucks)... 275 lt/lbs.. but I haven't come across anything that it couldn't take off, i've removed/worked on my tranny, rebuilt the head, and done some minor suspension work (BB's). I guess I might need a bigger one when I get into the 6" lift, but so far its done everything just fine.[/code]

$27  yeah mine was like $200. It's 650ft/lbs and I've had some bolts it wouldn't take out.

I know the day will come when my little CH won't get the job done anymore, but as of now i've definately gotten my 27 bucks worth!
