Here is my plan for the Grand:

http://home.comcast.net/~jlavy/images/jeep_cage1.jpg

The green tube is going to be 4x4. The rest of the tubing will be 1.75" round with .120" wall.

My plan it to run some sort of side al la PSC when it is cold:

Do you guys think I can hinge the tubes (in blue and the one above) and still maintain the rigidity? Do I even need the tubes? Alot of wranglers and such have no triangulation there...Initially, I plan to keep the rear fenders, but will evetually be trimmed for coilovers/air shocks/bags.

Any comments are welcome.

Remove those Horizontal A to B and B to C pillar braces. Just keep the Shoulder to ankle brace.

Turst me the Chuggy is a PIA to get in and out of with just the shoulder to ankle brace.

Looks good other than that.

Are you going to keep the rear seat or turn it into a storage area? If just storage I can think of some other designs that will be lighter.

Right now, I'm planning to keep the rear seats for the dogs and possible kids. I am curious what you have in mind...if you could post a pic.

Eventually, I see the rear being used for storage and shortening the whole thing.

Dave: I'm glad you approve. LOL

I'm posting a pic of my cage. This is of the main part of the cage. In my opinion the straight bar that you have at coming across at the shoulder is too much. Getting in and out of that MF will be tough.. I have a removable door bar that is diagonal from my shoulder to my calf. And the bar that comes down in front of my dash works as a leg/foot bar in case of a nasty roll. I also have an exo cage that goes through the body and mounts to the inside cage...

What are you planning for triangulation behind the front seats? Rotate the overhead bars from the b to c around so they form an x with the a to b overhead bars. Otherwise your b to c spreaders are pushing against that unsupported area on the c section. Think nodes. And run the a to b overhads to the a corner, not that unsupported span.

I have a seat bar that runs behind my front seats and crosses below, and a bar that runs the length of the floor as well.

I would flip the spreaders between teh B and C pillars so that they all meet in the center.

Also, I think solid rockers are the best platfrom. Hack out those rockers and boatside it or weld in some solid stock like mine. I would go more boatside-ish if I could do it over.

I don't feel competent to advise anyone on building a roll cage. But here are a couple of links to photos of mine. It was built according to NHRA standards for an "enclosed" vehicle, not an "open top" vehicle like Brentt's and Cody's ... or your ZJ if you chop the top off it.

When I was doing my research to learn as much as I could about roll cages, I found that the SCORE requirements for BAJA racers were cited often as among the most stringent. See the link below.

http://www.off-road.com/race/andataco/andataco.htm

I believe their specifications are detailed in the SCORE Manual, which you can purchase for $22.50 at the link below.

Might be worth the investment before you go any further.

Good luck. And stay safe.

UROC specs are childs play compared to SCORE. Those guy have to survive rolls at 100+ mph.

UROC is tough though, you compare UROC cage designs to some of those Scandanavian rigs....I can't believe some of those crazy Fins survive.

Cool. It looks the same as mine except for the rear portion. I just ordered the cage they have that you can order. I wanna say risko's was the first one.

oh, I didn't order some of the extras like dash bar and stuff, because that's stuff I can do. I just lack a bender.

Couldn't tell ya. Did you put your ceiling stuff back up, or just leave it out? I'm thinkin' overhead console and everything is just gunna get left out.

Yep.. No overhead anything.. Mine is closer to the roof than Risko's so all that had to go.. I'm 6'2", and I'm using Baja SS seats--Not adjustable..

I actually plan on dropping mine off at EOR next week to get a few things tweaked before GSSE @ Tellico. Going with some A-B and B-C shoulder to floor kickers and a few other little things that I can't do without a bender.

GSSE is August 6-8 (Friday - Sunday)

Had a few too many bad experiences with Crown... I ride the rum boat with the Captain every so often though. ;)

gin/tonic or vodka/water when the urge strikes me.

Henley.

The guy I used was Bob Warren of Bob's Race Car Chassis. The address is 101 Hilbia in Conroe, Texas. That's about 50-60 miles north of Houston and about 5-10 miles east of I-45. His telephone number is (936) 441-3636. I'm sending you a PM with my home phone number. Just give me a call and I'll provide you all the details you need.

The Geezer's cage is the shit. I really like the way that it was done.
