View Full Version : My ZJ gets new life, FINALLY "DONE"... WHEELIN' PICS INCLUDED

GetoZJ

Well, I don't have any pics right this second, but I will start to explain the story. I went from having short arms, 6.5" lift, 35 MT/R's, hp 30 w/ 4.10's and a lockrite, 8.8 w/ a minispool....kept braking shit, so I decided to sell everything off the Jeep, and start over (my T/R bumpers, winch, kevins rockers, etc). Now its all going to be "custom" made.

My new axles are a hp44 w/ 5.13's (welded ), and a 9" w/ 5.13's, and a minispool (and XJ leafs...see the suspention section, I'm debating the 4linkvs leaf idea).....And 38" TSL's on bobby long beadlocks (I'm running 6lug, i used chevy outers on the front).

I'm sure no one really gives a flying rats ass about my jeep, and how booty fab it'll be....but just stay tuned, if you care.....

For the leafs use the 7 leaf packs from the font of a wagoneer. They give great flex and are cheap.

Kraqa
07-01-2004, 09:04 PM
Good on ya man.

Sounds like a worthy set up. I'm interested in your choice of leafs. this should be a cool build up.

nice to see some more grands on 38's.

GetoZJ

I'm going back up to the shop tomorrow to do more work on it. Today, I just pulled the outers off the 10 bolt, and am going up to SN fab to pick up my newly drilled 6lug 9" shafts. Tomorrow I'll pull the drums off the 44, and I'll show everyone how I'm using front Chevy calipers and rotors to do under $100 discs on the 9".

I'm glad to see not everyone hates the idea of rear leaf springs (JD thinks I'm a "backwords redneck")....

Anyhow, I promise some pictures tomorrow, of the Jeep on jackstands, my junk axles, and how I (and the help of Ken, www.kensoffroad.com ) get this POS back together.

And another journal is born

I voted 4-link it

...mainy because I'm sick of my brother cracking leafs on his XJ.

Kraqa
07-02-2004, 12:43 PM
i 4 linked. not hard at all. love the wash board feel but the axle housing boed get crowed il tell you. It wouldn'tbe so bad if i was running a fuel cell. the stock tank gets in the way.

GetoZJ
07-02-2004, 12:57 PM
I'm still debating, anyone want to post some pics of their 4links? Axle and frame sides? That way I can rip off your design, because, when I think about it, wtf am I thinking? I'm going backwords here

Looks good, should be that much easier w/ the 9".

I didn't make it up to work on it today, I've been sick, and the 5.9's got a terrible case of death wobble (go figure, 5.5" lift, stock T/B's, arms, etc), and I dont really feel like risking my life to drive the 40 miles to the shop.

I'll be back up there on monday, I work saturday and sunday. I might be able to get Ken to take some pics though.

As of right now, I think I may just say fuck it [again] and 4 link it.

Kelly

Kraqa
07-02-2004, 04:59 PM
i would 4 link it cause its cool. and the bling factor is off the chart. But seriously. leafs and coils bothj have there ups and downs. if you 4-link it, it will de done. you could run coilovers, have full adjustemnt of your axle. just alot more flexibility in the long run.

If you build you sub frame to have multiple mounting locations on your upper arms then you can play with your anti-squat to "dial' it in just right. i knwo mine has around 95% and on the street its great. slight over stear very slight. not alot of body roll at all even with out a rear swap bar. wash board like feel on the bummpies. i'v riden in to many 4x4's with leafs and the ride quality is not that great.

but i would love to see what you come up with.

GetoZJ
07-03-2004, 08:45 PM
Well, tire choice has changed, I just ordered 4 36x13.5 IROK's for 600 shipped to my door, brand new. They're alot cheaper then the used tires/beadlocks I was going to buy, plus they're damn near the same size, and they're slightly more "bling" then plain ol' TSL's.

I need a fawkin' digital camera, bad. I won't even bother posting cell phone pics, they're worthless.

what about 1/4 elip in the rear as a possibility. you'd still have a 4-link, but you'd have leaves. not saying it's better than coils but if you want to be different.

Random pics of the last couple weeks. That YJ is super booty fab, and my friend spent over 10g's having it "built".....money don't buy you brains, look close at the steering. And Ken (kensoffroad.com) is just putting a cage in it, he has nothing to do with that rig!.

Well, I've re-registered with a new name because I forgot about this one. The Jeep has undergone alot of changes, leafs are not the case.

Since I posted last on here, I've been in, then out of the Military (med discharge), and the Jeep has just been being built slowly...

here are some pictures of everything, in no specific order....

hp44/9", duh. 5.13's, spool'd rear, detroit front, OX joints, yukon 4340 shafts.... all the links except the temp'd ghetto tractor heim'd rear uppers are off a friends old comp buggy, they've been thru 2 super crawls, so I'm not too worried about them bending . Other then that, just a crazy amount of props to Mike Kash http://www.crashfab.com....he's done all the work, and it looks awesome.

Wow, way to read....the rear upper links are temp'd until the new parts came in, it was just to get it rolling and up on the ramp to see what kind of shocks/bump stop situation was needed....

As for the rest of the rig, Mike aka Crash does one hell of a job, his welds are all 99.9% perfect.

Just make sure to try and get the rear axle as FAR back as you can due to how the door comes down--you can only remove so much til you start to cut away the rear doors.....

Yeah, I plan on cutting about an inch out of the rear door then welding it all back together. I have seen a couple of people do this on this forum. Also pushing the axle back a few inches. How did the 44 and 9 inch hold up and did you have chromo shafts? I cant decide if I should just bite the bullet and do a 60 front and shaved 14 bolt rear. Thanks

What he said....

Don't screw with weak parts--go big or go home. I ran a 44 on my rig and got tired of breaking it so now I have good diffs under it..

As for how the rig has held up--it was only ran like 3 times before it left the state (kelly if you are reading this----thanks for not paying me).

The rear 9" did fail 15 minutes out---spit the side adjuster(I didn't do the gear installs but did do the replacement diff) . But 38's and your beyond the limits of the 44

Thats what I thought. For the money it would probably be a better choice anyway. Plus, I wont have to upgrade when I decide to go bigger. Looks like its junkyard time again. Thanks for all the help.
