Here is a axle identification chart. I know that when I am ass deep in the junkyard and everything has 2 inches of gunk on it and I have been looking at axles for hours on end this little baby comes in handy.

After awhile you get good enough at it that you don't need it, but it is a great tool for those of us that are not there yet.

I like that chart. It shows the 14 bolt as well as some of the toy / lesser known dana axles. Rock.

Does anyone know the difference between an M35 and a D35C other than the M35 being built while Dana was still AMC? I have heard that the WJ 35's do not have C-clips. Any truth to this?

it's true... the wj's do not have c-clips. it's a tapered somethin' somethin' don't really care cause it's crap, broke my first d35 axle shaft a few days ago takin' it easy I thought, and finding a replacement to get me by until I can swap in my d44 and 9" has been a biiotch. Anybody know where to get cheap replacement shafts for wj's? stealership wants 450$ for one shaft! just need somethin' to get me by until I've got time to swap in the bigger axles.

ok so I would like to get some feedback on axle differences and why some are better than others!
I want to run 35"s and need some good references as to:
what vehicle to get them out of?
(cause the yards close to me don't let you in to pull your own)
what combo should I go with?
which setup goes well with Clayton's?
and will I be able to keep the 5-lug hubs and wheels that I have if I go with a f 8.8 or f 9in?

my current setup is the d30-d35 limited slip of which has done well but only with my 33s I don't think it will handle the 35s! ...or will it?

Anyone running the ford 10.25, iv'e meat gazed it underneath some trucks before it looks stout as hell, maybe there just not old and plentiful enough yet? Theres a major weakness i've missed?

Plentiful, yes. Considered an upgrade from a 35 or 44a, definitely not. IIRC that is the axle that is under my bro's '89 XJ. Last time I cracked open the cover on that thing, the gears looked pretty weak.

I've seen a guy in a full sized bronco running one of those on some pretty tough trails, he beat the crap out of that rig and the axle stood up to it. That's just one example, I'm sure other people will chime in with good or bad feedback.

The Sterling 10.25 is a good axle, quite a few guys here run them. They just don't have that much aftermarket support.
