View Full Version : Slow page loading

Apparently I'm not the only one that has experienced slow page loading over the last couple of weeks. There are times when I have to stop (red X) the page and refresh it to get the page to load. The site seems to be doing a lot of "thinking" before moving on to the next page. This happens both at work and at home but other sites I visit load at normal rates.

Is there something I can do on my end to help speed things up?

I've had the same issue throughout the day on various computers FWIW.

Same here, gotta stop the page and refresh for it to pull up. Does it on my home laptop and the computers on campus.

It's been doing it to me at work for a long time, just figured it was our craptastic internet at work, as it's always been fine at home for me. I'm thinking it's something to do with our host, since the short time I had ZJO up and running on this host I was experiencing similar things where I don't have that issue on other vbulletin forums, even those running vb4.

I've only run into the problems when other sites have been running slow, too, so I didn't think much of it. The major difference though is that in those instances, it seems like the auto-redirection that happens when it's compiling the search results quits working, but works fine once I "Click here if the browser does not redirect you" -- whereas the auto-redirection seems to work on other sites. I unfortunately don't have any more specifics than that at this time.

I'm seeing the same slow loading issue as described above.

We're never going to have the same performance we did over a year ago when I had the site with only 3 others on a dedicated server, but over the last week it's definitely been hanging on requests occasionally, I'll look into it.

Deffinitely seems like something is wrong. I have to click 2,3,4 times sometimes to get shit to load. How am I supposed to squeeze my MC fix in at work when it takes 10 minutes to load a page?!

I often run multiple tabs at a time and will click on "New Posts" and then change to another tab. If I do that, more than likely it'll be stuck either on the main page still (never redirect to the "working on" page) or it'll stay stuck at the "working on" page. If I don't change tabs/windows, it is a lot more reliable in going to the proper page.

I haven't noticed any major issues the last few days, but I haven't been on the board much. And when I have I've been tethered or on shitty airport/hotel wifi. Matt is going to try and dig into the database a little bit to see if thats where the problem lies. Thanks for putting up with this for a bit guys, I've been in CT visiting Pam's family so I haven't been able to do much.

Matt did find a few issues in the database and repaired them, so we should be set. If you guys do notice any hang ups still please post up.

So far it seems completely fixed. I was having to refresh a half dozen times to get a page to load like the others, but it seems to be back to normal now.

Thanks!

I'm still having problems.

The biggest issue for me is when I click reply with quote, then I type my reply and click post, it sits and loads for a bit, then tells me "Are you sure you want to leave this page? Navigating away will cause any unsaved information to be lost" So I click leave page anyways, and then it posts.

I still get stuck at pages sometimes. Sometimes I have to completely navigate away from MC, then come back. Just re-clicking on a link will result in a "hang" if the original clink hung up...

We're looking into a few other things, it might be part of the shared hosting we're on now, still could be a database issue though.

I can see if I have any spare servers.. this way instead of running shared, you'll have your own.

No thanks - I have plenty of spare servers, hardware isn't the issue. Time and resources to maintain an infrastructure properly is, not to mention connectivity and redundancy. The sites database is now at roughly 500MB, definitely pushing it for shared hosting, but I'm not spinning up a web server on one connection.

We're working with our host and vBulletin to try and get this nailed down. Hopefully we won't have to put up with it much longer. Matt's been handling the brunt of this too as it's beyond my knowledge level and most of my computer stuff is all packed up already. So  to Matt, or flour and water if that's your thing. :flipoff2:

OK so I have narrowed the "slow loading" down to two things:
1) Searches (mostly the "What's New" and "New Posts" searches, but I honestly haven't done much searching anywhere else.
2) Clicking on the "Go to first new post" icons next to the thread. This seems to be more prominent with picture heavy threads.

FWIW, when I view my search results, I typically open up a new tab in the background for every thread I want to view (if it's a list of the New Posts, I'll middle click on the "Go to first new post" icon), so I am sometimes loading multiple pages at once. It seems that once I get one page to load, the others almost immediately finish loading, too.

Unfortunately, mine is still hanging up. Took just under 45 seconds to load this page after the initial click from the main forum screen.

Keep clicking away. I average about 1 million clicks a day on this site alone. It only seems to happen every 15,571 clicks -- give or take a click or two.

I've spent about 10 hours on this issue over the last week. The issue isn't exactly vbulletin's, and it isn't exactly the datacenter's either, but in a way they interact in regards to crap I'm not going to bore you with. A fix is a dedicated server, but I don't believe it's in the budget, nor do I want to take the time to maintain it, this doesn't exactly keep a roof over my head.

BigDaveZJ

Would putting MC on a virtual private server all by itself at hostgator make it any better?

OverkillZJ
07-28-2011, 09:57 AM
Yes and no - I made a lot of tweaks that'll alleviate this issue hugely, we should talk in the next couple of weeks, but you're closing on a house, I'm closing on another deal, the forum is 99.9% happy so let's talk in a week or two when I have more time to think about it a lil!

SirFuego

The site was probably slow for the last half hour... I worked with a database administrator (this is over my head at this point) converting and optimizing the tables so that it should be more efficient in this shared hosting environment to buy us a lot of time. I expect the issue to happen rarely, if at all, for quite awhile.

As payment - someone buy my Effin Samurai!

I thought I noticed that too. Been spending most of my board time on IE6 (stupid work computers) that don't have favicons. I did the update during a fantasy draft the other night and must have written over the file somehow, or the new version of vb includes it's own or something. I'll try to peak at it tonight, should just be a quick upload.
