with the huge attendance at GSSE-W, people are gonna be asking about this anyday now... :smt037

what weekend should we have it? End of July might allow people who bought permits last year to reuse them without buying new. But it would break our "first weekend that overlaps into August" rule

Don't know if my vote counts since I don't have a Grand :o but I picked July cause I'm already off that weekend and won't have to go through the hassle of getting someone to switch weekends with me like I did last year.

The thought crossed my mind. That's a long drive for me to just ride passenger, though (and not drink any beer after wheeling!!). Not to mention that I have a baptism to go to the following weekend (4.5 hour drive one way) and I'm leaving for London the week after. I'll mention this to my local club and maybe I can find someone to come down.

There was a CJ-3A on 36" SXs and an orange YJ on portal axles and boggers. The Big Dogs/Rausch Creek people might recognize the rigs. I think this was their first trip down to the southeast since Tellico closed.

Well guys, I've wanted to make it to this event for a while but it never worked out while I was living in Northern VA. However, I have now moved back to Southwest VA and I'm only about 45 minutes from Harlan (if that much). So, this year will be my best chance at making it to GSSE since 2003!

My only question is: Since I'm open/open with 32's...what are the odds there will be other comparable grands there? I've wheeled long enough to know that I have no interest in being in the way of everyone else.

Last year, 35s were the smallest tires there and at least one locker. In my opinion 32s open/open would be a royal PITA at Harlan

One good thing about harlan, is you have the option to bypass pretty much every obsticle, stay with your group and spectate without having to walk all that far..

Unless I'm just not thinking of all the trails, there aren't many trails for vehicles that open/open would be much fun on.

Silverback, Being just 45 minutes away from Harlan why not come meet everyone and maybe ride shotgun with someone so you can see the trails?

ATL ZJ

If it is bone dry there are a few trails I can think of that would be really good. If it's the slightest bit wet you won't have much fun unless you enjoy winching. And without a winch you'd be hating life.

But as Trey and Jared said, coming just to eat, drink, camp, and ride will be more than worth the drive.

On topic question, has anyone bought the GSSE domain that Cody let expire?

Nope thought about it, but didn't want to spring for it personally. We should snag it though. I'm sure we could come up with some ideas to put it to good use.

We still have about 15 GSSE 2010 tshirts that if people want to buy we could put that $ toward buying the domain and hosting the site...

BigClay
05-09-2011, 04:59 PM
We could always take up a collection this year. How much does the domain cost annually?

ATL ZJ
05-09-2011, 05:43 PM
Domains are cheap. $10 or $20 a year. Hosting is a little more, unless somebody in that line of business wants to donate that...

I would just overcharge by a dollar or two for the BBQ/Shirt and let the profits go towards the domain. I thought the BBQ/Shirt costs were very reasonable last year, so I don't see an issue adding on another dollar or two. Given the number of folks that attended last year, charging an extra dollar should more than cover the domain name costs -- then just talk to Dave to get it redirected here.

I'll be honest though, I just come here for any GSSE-related info, so I know that I personally wouldn't use the domain name unless you feel like hosting payments and registration online.

ATL ZJ
05-10-2011, 09:59 AM
good idea on the redirect and thanks for the hosting offer Dave

this..

what are some of you guys ideas for a separate gsse site?

I was just trying to think of why we might want one and most of the stuff we do we can do on the forum...

The only things I can think of would be:

1. a go-to place for complete info that doesn't get lost at the beginning of a thread where no one will see it after a week
2. a way to have a more official registration, GSW-style, probably using Google docs for simplicity. then it's already in an excel spreadsheet and can be printed as a comprehensive list for check-in

BigClay
05-10-2011, 11:54 AM
I will help with whatever I can, I just don't want GSSE to be stolen. I think Dave's generous offer is the way to go. We can all take up a collection to buy the URL and then have it redirected here. Maybe just have a sticky with the latest and greatest info. Just my .02

ATL ZJ
05-10-2011, 12:43 PM
If we go to the trouble to buy a web address we might as well have a website.

take a look at the gsw site that is actually a part of MC (but not a forum page): http://gsw.mallcrawlin.com/ and see which of those ideas we could borrow. Obviously we run a much simpler event so any site we'd have would be less complex, but maybe a town map + trail map and a more structured registration would be helpful...

SirFuego
05-11-2011, 02:51 PM
what are some of you guys ideas for a separate gsse site?
Similar to what Cam said...
1) Basic event information
2) Online registration and Paypal links. Dumping the registration into a database and/or spreadsheet would probably make the planning info easier.
3) I guess this is part of (1), but I would also include trail descriptions similar to the sheet you handed out last year -- perhaps with locker/tire size recommendations in ideal conditions (I can't remember if you included that or not). That way people will get an idea of what to expect if they've never been to Harlan before.
4) Lodging information (i.e. let it be known that the "action" is going to be on the Evarts side, not the Putney side). Include links to the campground and cabin rentals. I put together an annotated map last year in Google Maps and could expand on that if you wish.

Speaking of lodging -- one other thing that I saw is that you can rent houses in Evarts as well. Supposedly, if you get the right one, there are ones with bigger lots that can support a number of trail rigs and tents. This might be a better option than the parking lot -- err campground. That way the costs can be split among everyone and people that want to live a pampered life (like myself after that 13 hour drive) would pay extra to stay in the house. I'm 100% out for this year :-(, but just throwing that out there as an option.

For those not looking to really camp, I highly recommend the Black Mountain Cabins for folks wanting good lodging -- prices are very reasonable, too (just don't drive past the church if you are towing your rig). That's where I plan to stay at future GSSE's.

ATL ZJ
05-11-2011, 04:10 PM
The parking lot is tradition. Plus I hear if you make a ruckus in some of those rental houses the neighbors and/or owners get mad. I can think of several late night shenanigans from the past two years that might not fly at a rental house. What I'm trying to say is if you're volunteering to be on the hook for the security deposit... :flipoff2:

If I can keep from totaling any more saturns with the jeep then I may be able to afford the insurance long enough to get there and back. Last friday my jeep hydroplaned in the rain and spun around backwards and tail whipped a saturn that was coming from the opposite direction but was stopped in the center turn lane of a 4 lane road (he was trying to make a left). Pretty wild. It made my passenger side rear wheel well super huge and broke the $8 stud that goes from the rear steer ram into the clevis thingy. There was enough left to re-attach it loosely so I can move it around the yard and shit. The little shims that go between the clevis and ram evaporated though. I have a bunch of plastic parts from the saturn stuck in various parts of my jeep but I think I'm gonna leave them..except for the ones between the tire and the rim. Also my rock rail, that was due for replacement anyway,is now completely under the rocker panel and smooshed. Insurance said that if his car is less than $1800 then my insurance won't go up. The car I hit used to be a 96 saturn SC2 so I'm hoping it'll be under the limit.

I contacted him because of the hours I've been working lately does not leave me with much time. I'm just too cheap to make that happen. So, it looks like I will be making time to get that done myself.

Yall have fun and get some good pics and vids for all us non-attendees this go around. Everyone wheel safe!!! I don't want to hear any horror stories, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone for GSSE-W. If I don't see you at GSMW this year first.

Me, Sean, and Jon are supposed to be at a cabin. Hows the parking there? We will have 3 F350s and trailers. We should get there Thursday afternoon, around 7 if it is like the past few years and will probably do a quick night run up to lower rock garden or something. We'll be hanging out down at the campgrounds after wheeling each night however.

Tim C
07-24-2011, 01:42 AM
Oh yea, Trey. Our buddy Jon will be there in his sammi buggy on tons and 42s again this year. I think Sean already paid for 2 people though, if not hes not worried about the BBQ, just letting you know since you seem to be the one keeping tabs on that stuff.

BigClay
07-24-2011, 09:24 AM
Cool Tim. Parking is kinda tight up there, but we can make do. Are the F350s 4wd? The reason I ask, is the road to the cabins (and especially to the ones in the back) is a PITA in a 2wd truck (ask Ryan about it). Looks like I will be the first one up there, so I will make sure my truck and trailer are out of the way.

Seans dually is 2wd but me and Jon have 4wd's. Worse case we can unload Sean's jeep and he can pull the empty trailer up there.

Black Mountain or Putney Cabins? Parking is a bit tight at the Black Mountain, but I guess Putney has a lot more room (it's also on the opposite side of the mountain where everyone else stays).

At Black Mountain, we had the bottom three cabins and the parking was manageable. There was a little area above our cabins that we could have parked extra trucks/trailers. It looked like more of a construction area for new cabins, though, so who knows what condition it's in this year. I'd recommend going up to the cabins in 4wd if possible -- it's a driveway I do not want to back down with a trailer. If it's wet and you don't have 4wd (or if one of you is towing a big gooseneck), I'd recommend unloading your rigs at the bottom of the hill. Once you get up to the cabin areas, a 2wd truck may need a little momentum (ask rstrucks) to get up to the higher cabins.

Thanks, SirFuego. We SHOULD be at the black mountain cabins but who knows what communications may be screwed up. LOL! Sean's the only one with a 2wd tow rig, but hes only pulling a 16' gooseneck single car hauler. I'll have the biggest trailer (23' deckover, bumper pull) but I've got a 4wd tow rig. Worse case they told us we could park a rig or two at the store, or maybe we can just rent a campsite to squeeze one or two trucks into also. We'll figure things out when we get there I guess.

Does anyone have any dana 30 shafts or unit bearings laying around they want to get rid of? I could use another spare for each sid for the trip.

I'll have two with me but they are going home with my brother. If you break and need one we won't leave you stranded but you'll have to settle up with him though.

EDIT - I may have some unit bearings kicking around too. I'll check this evening.

Last year I just unloaded at the campground and drove up to the cabins unloaded. I made it to the second tier/level but not without "gettin' a run at it". The gravel's just too loose to get traction - in my street tire dually anyway. The first year I had to unload halfway up the hill, it sucked.

Sounds great, I have a spare for each side so should be alright just figured id ask. Got a few more things to do to get the zj ready but real excited for the trip! Well be pulling in Friday night, hope the dairy hut parking lot isnt dead then

Also anyone have the dairy hut campground number? I just realized we didnt even reserve a spot. Summer makes me such a slacker.

Nah we missed it last year. I was the only one ready to go out of our club and everyone else bailed so I didnt make the drive by myself. I was there the year before when Ryan and Trucks filmed their episode. My roommates ZJ was the one in the episode where they said they could keep up with Jeeps on bigger tires even though theyre rocking 33s :smt082

Also I may be crazy but I remember reserving a spot the last time we went, but looking it up on NC4x4 they said its first come first serve and they just collect the money each day.

So found a little bit of a problem that might keep my Jeep from coming. My driver side upper CA mount in the rear is completely ripped off and only a tiny weld holding it on. Theres a huge hole in my frame behind it. The other mount on the passenger side is also starting to rip off. I had a thud in the rear end when I accelerated from a stop and thought it was my CV in my driveshaft... apparently not. We will be getting a rig together to come though. My roommates ZJ is currently missing a transmission though so that might be a far shot. Another buddy of mine has a 4 runner on 37s and he was gonna ride with me because he trashed his rear gears a while ago but I think were gonna try to get a new set in and trailer his up there.

better to find that problem in the driveway than in harlan, we've recovered more than one with that problem at gsse through the years.. you've got plenty of time to fix it, its summertime and you've got more than 72 hours to come up with a fix, don't be a pansie!

This sounds like it's gonna be ghey. Maybe I'll park at the bottom and ride up with Tim or Jon before I decide how much of a running start I'm gonna need to get all my giant junk up the hill. Thanks for the info though. I guess if I have to unload on the side of a mountain it wouldn't be the end of the world but it's still not something I want to do. Would suck to haul everything up there just to roll my junk trying to unload the truck, hehe.

I plan to unload the Jeep at the gas station where you check-in, then driving the jeep and truck up the gravel road to the cabins. It will just be easier to do it that way. I still may have to put the truck in 4wd... even if it is unloaded... to get to the second tier. It is just that steep and loose.

I pulled my junk on a 16' bumper pull trailer with 4wd Ram 1500 on stock tires and didn't run into any issues last year. The part that Ryan was talking about was after you get into the cabin area. The driveway leading to the cabins is relatively steep, but it's also paved. Although if it's wet, I would highly advise unloading at the bottom of the hill. Once you get into the cabin area, all of the roads/parking is on gravel and there is a flat area you can unload your rig to reduce weight if you need to get up the tiers (there is plenty of room to back down those tiers if needed).

Last year the driveway was marking with a large "PRIVATE PROPERTY KEEP OUT" sign with "Black Mountain Cabin customers only" in about an 8 point font below it. This driveway is also the driveway for a house on the same hill. So just be aware that it IS the first driveway on the right when you get on the road. Just be sure to not drive past the church if you miss the driveway -- otherwise you are stuck going up a steep paved road that keeps getting narrower and steeper as you go up it. Once I got turned around, I drove back down the hill in 4LO 1st gear.

Ohh were still coming Clay, well be in my buddies 4 runner on 37s so well be right behind you the whole time. It was either try to fix mine or set up new gears and get his going. I still had a decent list besides the control arm mounts so we said screw it and set the gears last night and gonna drop the 3rd member in today. Its a pretty sick little 4 runner.

That sounds pretty intense. I told the lady about all our huge crap and she said she was gonna save some room for my crappy 2wd at the bottom...hopefully she did - just in case I can't make it up the hill. I appreciate the info.

Everyone I knew last year with a phone with Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint couldn't get a signal in Evarts. There were folks with cell phones that worked, but I think they were using AllTell or some small cell company. I couldn't even send texts. I had to scrounge up some quarters and use a payphone for the first time since high school about 11 years ago. Even finding a payphone that worked in Evarts was an adventure :smt082 We ran into Harlan later in the weekend for dinner (which is about 15-20 minutes from Evarts) and I had a signal there.

Don't forget to hang out at the Clubhouse when it's open (I think Sat nights).
