View Full Version : GSSE Checklist

- Pick Jeep up from shop with a new tranny
- Wire up the full gamut of lights
- New trailer tires

Nothing too crazy, so hopefully I won't be scrambling last minute to get ready, but I'm sure something will crop up. I have 1 (possibly 2) local wheeling trips planned before GSSE. They should be "easy" trips, so I figure anything I break on those trips would have broken in Harlan -- just filtering out the weak links!

Test

rebuild front shock- check
gusset front upper link mounts- check
brace driver side airbump pad- check
swap axles under trailer- check

drain front diff and retorque ring gear bolts- check
install speakers and amp
install PVC ring inside H1 lock- check
mount second fire extinguisher- can wait
install front limit straps- check
lube driveshafts- check
cut out hole in skid for oil changes- can wait
buy bailey a new solenoid- who are we kidding, bailey doesn't wheel

Did you get a chance to talk to FOA? Was this the reason that the coilovers took a shit?

Did you get a chance to talk to FOA? Was this the reason that the coilovers took a shit?

no I don't think FOA would really give a shit anyway. I've been using my semi-tight winch rope as a front limit strap and it took a toll on my fairlead mount. I straightened and braced that up last night but I need regular limit straps too. Gonna take the shocks apart probably this weekend and see what's up.

and damn I knew I had stuff missing from that list...

You were actually the inspiration for me going with a new trailer vs a used one, figured it was safest to go with new. As for the Tahoe, I know it will be no speed demon, but hopefully other than that it will be OK.

Just make sure you check your trans often. If you going to have an issue, that would probably be it. You don't need a turbo diesel power to tow a grand. It is a bonus for sure, but I think your Tahoe will be fine power wise.

As for my checklist:
- replace all my bushings in the long arms and tracbar.
- lower it down about 2" front and rear
- replace the bulbs in my gay assed ProComp 130's
- move the welder, generator, air compressor on to the gooseneck
- finish my skidplate
- pack my spares and tools in the jeep

Trans temp gauge and a aux cooler might be your best friend. Heat is the killer.

When we were there a couple weeks ago it was a little less slick than it was last year at GSSE. It rained a lot the week before we went but it wasn't the slickest I've ever seen it. Of course there is still plenty of time for the place to dry out or get completely soaked between now and then...

Wired up some old fog lights to the low beams last night. Planning to finish the rest of the lighting over the weekend. Gotta rewire the brakes on the trailer, too, because they got pinched and they ripped in half inspecting them when I was getting my tires changed. I guess that's why my brakes haven't been working (well) for the last couple trips!

The key to the dust is to be up front, so eat my dust :smt065 Well at least till you put your windows up and turn on the AC:smt044

Finished fabbing up the new track bar bracket last night. So all i need to do is mount it and put a final weld on it. I gained another 1 1/2" of up travel before it smacks my truss.

Also I forgot I need to remove the lug nut stud that I was using to replace the bolt that fell out of my rear caliper on the last trip.

Update: I've just got the easy stuff now. I did have to replace the Cranshaft positioning sensor again. It was my fault. I some how pinched the wire when I raised the crossmember and trans back in place. No biggie though. I'm a seasoned pro at it now. only took 10 minutes.

As for my checklist:
- replace all my bushings in the long arms and tracbar. DONE! The johnny joints are pretty easy. But the stock style bushings in Claytons LA's are a bitch to change out, but I got all of them.
- lower it down about 2" front and rear Done!
- replace the bulbs in my gay assed ProComp 130's
- move the welder, generator, air compressor on to the gooseneck
- finish my skidplate
- pack my spares and tools in the jeep

1) Fix leaky valve stem (I think it's being pinched by the internal beadlocks, so I need to break the bead and adjust the beadlock to hopefully fix it). If I can't do that, I'm probably going to need to borrow some air in the mornings to get it back up.

actually wasn't that bad, just HOT. started at 1, worked mostly at a casual pace and I finished up around 11. High steer arms were OK, had to space the tie rod heim down a little for him to have any uptravel at all, but that is how mine is also... bent frame sounds like classic will exaggeration

Haha. It's only been in the 80s up here (for like 20 straight days -- which is I think a Buffalo record) and it's too hot for my northern butt to do anything.

I think 10-15 degrees is about my limit for working on the Jeep in the winter, though. The worst part about the cold is usually the wind, so even a non-heated garage isn't too bad if you keep moving around. You can always put on more layers in the cold ;-)

OK got the reverse lights and turn signals working. Couldn't get the brake or tail lights to work though -- the two most important ones. I looked at the FSM and I mis-read the schematic and wrote down the wrong color for the brake lights -- so that should be easy to fix.

Note to self: Look at which connectors I cut out since Jeep conveniently changes wiring color from one side of the connector to the other.

It looks like I fuckered up the taillight wiring somehow because I can't find the feed from the light switch on the dash in running to the rear quarter. There is at least an ignition-on power feed I can directly wire the tail lights into as a quick fix to so that I at least have rear lights -- per Evarts requirements from what I read.

The magnets I got for mounting the rock lights also weren't as strong as I was hoping, so I don't think I'll have any rock lights if we do a night run.

SB406
07-28-2010, 04:41 PM
Jared, The wire for the taillights may be there, but you can't find it with a test light because the fuse may be blown. Check that.

zjeepin

07-28-2010, 09:36 PM
I got it working. There was a jumble of wires I "threw aside" the other night and didn't even bother to look at them. Had both the wires I needed.

Got the tires aired up for the trip and made sure all other tire pressures were good. She's ready to go! Wake up, get some Tim Horton's and ship on out!!

Probably going to relocate some of the lights, but it'll do.

I've got a slight problem. The two other jeeps I was planning on driving up there with arnt going anymore. So it would just be me on the 4 hour drive, no trailer or anything. Im really not liking the odds of something breaking and not having a way home. I'm going to try and still go though, well be riding 4 deep down there now too :smt095.

Don't worry man... Back in my Tellico days that was the norm. I remember one trip I drove 4 hrs back to school with two busted out windows and a dying transfer case in the rain :D But there should be a ton of tools in the campground if the carnage monster does find you. ;)

There are a couple of Clemson guys coming up Fri morning(Turbo Steve and 1 other rig). Chris(Simo) has been doing all the communicating with them, so I don't know any of the specifics. I dunno if you know Steve or not, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind you tagging along.

Oh and I'm finally done working on my shit. I had to put a booster and master cylinder on the Dodge. I've just gotta load onto the trailer and pack all my shit up after work tomorrow. I don't have a clue when I'll be rolling in tomorrow night. I'm always running behind. I can't see getting there any later than 10. Evarts bridge whores...here I come!
