My 02 WJ 4.7 has the 2 precats and 1 larger cat. Has anyone removed the 3rd catalytic converter and passed the Emissions test?

I probably would be banned over at JF if i posted this question....

technically you would fail since it's missing a cat, but few inspectors actually look under the vehicle, so I would say as long as the computer is getting signals within spec then you should be good.

what is the point in removing it? performance? there is not much gain as the newer ones are the honeycomb style and flow well. it was the much older BB style that was restrictive

Well there are 3 different setups of cats on the 4.7

Not 100% positve on the dates:
1.) No pre-cats, one big cat 99-00
2.) 2 pre-cats and one big cat ~01-03 --> my setup
3.)2 pre-cats, No big cat ~02-04

How are the inspectors going to know what how many cats mine is supposed to have since its an '02 which had 2 exhaust styles?

I chose to install an 04 unit on my WJ when I redid my exhaust since it hangs waaaay low and I would get hung on it from time to time. Mine is a 00 but Cali emissions so it had three cats. Maybe that is why he wants to get rid of it. IIRC mine hung like 4-5 inches below the unirail.

I would like to upgrade the exhaust system to a 3" starting after the Y-pipe to a Flowmaster 50 delta or suv and if I don't need the 3rd larger cat to pass emissions I wont bother...
