I thought it was originally coming from the oil pan, but no. I've looked a lot harder at the leak and I think it's coming from the 'side cover'? It's on the driver side of the block, towards the middle of the motor.

I know it's a crappy picture, but if you can imagine the side of the block there, there's a lip where two pieces meet that forms a backwards Nike swoosh almost - that's where it's wet.

And in that last pic you can see where it's draining down the side of the bell housing. I opened the inspection cover and it's dry in there, so I know it's not the rear main.

I've read about tappet covers, side covers, vacuum pumps, etc.

Cummins aren't my thing, have you posted on a diesel/Cummins forum?

Search there. I'm sure the fix has been documented by someone.

A quick search turned this up;

Yup just replaced one last week UGH. It is a relativly simple cover basically a rectangle but you will have to remove the injection pump, lines etc to get at it. The injection pump is timed to the motor and you will need some special tools and knowhow to get the job done. Not trying to scare you just want you to know what you are up against. HTH

ed: Its hard to tell from your pics the exact location of the leak but its a likely candidate. Sometimes the vibes from the diesel can work the bolts loose so you may be able to GENTLY snug them up.

I've been watching the videos on youtube that everyone recommends by that Diesel Dan on R&R on the VP44. It doesn't seem too-too bad. Just a lot of work to get to the tappet cover.

Also, like that link he posted above says, it could be the seal on the vacuum pump too. I've searched and searched and can't find anywhere where it talks about where that is. Suggestions?

Your truck may be too new for a vac pump. IIRC they did away with it at some point.

$750+parts to change the tappet cover gasket. Wow.

I think the leak maybe have sealed itself. I haven't noticed any spots today and the bell housing doesn't have a leak down the side of it. I'm hoping it did.

Depending on the weather it can happen. My valve covers on my 4.7 started leaking after several 30-40* days here in Fl. Of course they never resealed themselves after that.
