5.9 ANDY

i see these things every day, and often they are towing a decent sized trailer, or artillary piece, so, i ask the question...

how well of a tow rig would one of these bad boys make? i was thinking of doing a military auction, i hear they go for like 5K.

th only downside i have heard is that the engine that is in the (gm 6.5L).

so i was thinking that eventualy i could either upgrade it, or.. do a 5.9 cummings out of a dodge.

I'll tell ya, 6.2 is crap because its under powered and it basically kills itself, 6.5 is better but still crap, if your going to aim for a hummer get a M1025 A2, it has light armor, a 6.5 turbo, electronic trans (4L8OE i think) oh and it has A/C, im not to sure of the trans because i really havent messed with them too much, but they are 4DR turtle back MP trucks, and actually quite comfortable, be prepared for the injector pump to go, and also the ac low pressure switch to catch fire or melt down, oh and dont forget to convert the system to 12 volt instead of 24 volt (have fun with the wireing) basically im saying dont go for it, if you want a tow rig, you would be better off gettin some farmers old work truck, but i say happy hunting.

I think it would be pretty bad ass.....but I have no technical reasoning to that. It would just look cool :smt023

Actual military humvees are de-milled after retirement - they are cut up and sold only as scrap, not complete units. You'd have to get a used civilian Hummer - maybe you can buy one from the governator now that he's going green.

That is a tough call, way back, late 80's ish, we used to see them in NJ for sale in the $5k range, in perfect shape.. Now not so much, They are still available in small quantities to cerain civi organizations such as Police and Fire Dept's, other Co's with credentails.. but those are demilitarized as well, no armor radio equip. and such..
There was a guy on the west coast that got a hold of some reconditioned them and then sold 'em off to whomever, they went in the low 20's and up, way too up..

I have seen a few come up on this site, great site, but not recently.. Other site like it too, but they are all with a note as to who can buy or bid on them..

Also, other than the cool factor, why? Yeah they are near bulletproof, but they can be a lor more difficult to maintain than one would think.. Often times the work done on a Humvee was to just get it running and out, and there are more than a handful of parts that are no off the shelf..remember the drivetrain is the common part sourced from major suppliers, certain others... not so much... For me a nice Dodge would have the same if not better towing cap. acomfort factor, power accessories, oh and nicer seats,, vs. the Humveee having no insulation, no power toys, no radio or radio equip.. etc.. oh and the engine choice sucks, and swaps are not as easy as they might seem, think yes to engine/trans mating, and no to anything else being bolt in...
But hell yeah, I would if I could, it's a Hummer..

Avoid the 6.5 - it can be built into a decent motor, but it's not worth the effort... Modifications to them are relatively cheap compared to other diesels, but a 6.5TD built as can be without internal modification is still weaker than a stock, well, anything from the big 3 now days. They also have serious cooling and injection pump issues when towing.

I would get an army deuce.5 bobbed and tow with it, no CDL required most places, easy to get in CA, beastly, and when the ZJ breaks, you can wheel the duece.5!

That's a great price on the 10, ,even just for the sheetmetal, around here there have been 2 clean examples for sale in 10+ years and some junkers, ranging from $7-15k...
They where tow rigs but not offroad friendly, cool yes... My vote is for the bobbed deuce, paking might be a bitch, but you can figure something out..

http://www.army6x6.com/362.htm This would be an absolute beast! For me, it would be a hard choice between the M818 or a bobbed deuce. Either one are bad ass and either one would be a blast to wheel the shit out of. I dunno, I would have to lean more toward the M818 myself.

I want an Deuce sometime soon. I think the ability for it to run on almost anything (multi-fuel engine) along with the cool aspect of driving one would be pretty sweet. They get about 10mpg, and I could just run the damn thing on WVO. I have seen them go for as low as $450 bucks at auction in a "running condition unknown" according to Gov. Liquidation's description. They usually sell for around the 14-2500 dollar range in my neck of the woods ar, tx, mo, ok.

I saw a post on one some site about a canadian guy who got rid of the rear duals and went with wide singles but kept the double rear axle. His deuce was a radio truck or something that had the "shell" on the back. He ended up converting that thing to a full fledge camper with shower, toilet, desk, fridge, tv, bunk beds, etc. It was pretty sweet! That would be a sweet RV/Towrig when you have to go far away!

Just call your buddies up at camp and tell them to bring the camper to you since you'll have to pull an all nighter for trail repairs :)

Yeah, and there's no running to the local hardware store for many of those parts either, I'd bet.
