It's official- February 20-21 will mark the first ever Winter grand slam at Coal Creek OHV (Windrock) in Oliver Springs, TN. Coal creek has something for rigs of all levels. More info on the trails can be found at http://www.coalcreekohv.com/.

The cabin registration process will be a little more formal than usual because we are reserving a two story, fully furnished cabin as a group. Registration for the cabin is now full and will run $70/person. Your nonrefunable registration fee will get you a warm place to hang out and sleep on Friday and Saturday nights, plus shower facilities, kitchen, parking, etc. Trail fees are separate and are listed on Coal Creek's website. Please register as soon as you can so that we can reserve an appropriate amount of space. Beds will be handled on a first come, first served basis but please plan to bring an accommodating attitude regardless of sleeping arrangements.

http://windrocklodge.com/media/img/wr1/u1/full/-tmp-jpg5a5dxe.jpg

To register, paypal $70 to grandslamsoutheast@gmail.com. Please send the money as a "Personal" payment as "Payment Owed". This is so we do not get hit with the fee that is charged when selling goods and services. We will be forced to refund payments sent incorrectly.

If you want to arrange for your own accommodations, that's fine, but out of fairness to everyone, we can't allow nonpaid participants to crash for free. That should cover the official part of it, look forward to seeing you guys on the trail in February!

P.S. If you are coming and staying somewhere else, just post up with your plans so we can expect you.

Cam, swing by the shop and we will get you some $$$s for the cabin. Also start thinking about a front and rear 4 link for my truck. I think the plan is to get it done between Oct 11th (SCC in Hot Springs) and Feb 19th....Ah winter projects.

Good deal, I'll try to stop by next weekend if not sooner. I'm happy to lend a hand with your suspension if you need it. Mine will be down at the same time, but it'll be done for windrock, come hell or high water.

Everybody else, keep paypalling. We'd like to be able to get something booked within a few weeks... before someone else does, so we don't have to change the date!

Don't let these scare you off if you don't have an extreme rig guys... RR is one of the hardest trails there and is entirely optional. In fact the majority of trails there are mild to moderate.

how many people can the cabin hold?

ATL ZJ
10-13-2009, 12:09 PM
The cabin is two floors. The top floor has 8 beds, and 13 "spots" in beds (with people sleeping together in queens/doubles). The bottom floor has 5 beds and can sleep 8 total in beds. So there are 21 spots in beds if we rent both. Beds are first come, first serve, but if anyone prefers to sleep on a pad or cot on the floor rather than sharing a bed, that's fine too.

We're trying to rent the top first, and then the bottom if needed. If we get more than 21 people coming, we can look into whether the management company will allow us to go over the 21 person number.

OK we're booked. :D

11 out of 21 spots are filled. So only 10 spots are left. According to the rental agreement, we cannot exceed 13 people upstairs and 8 downstairs. So if you plan on coming, and don't want to camp, get those registrations in before space is gone.

To those already registered, if you're bringing a passenger, remember that they count as a cabin occupant and you must pay for them... Hopefully that was clear, but I don't want there to be any confusion on arrival that Friday.

Well damn, I didn't realize it was going to cost you guys extra. I read over paypal's rules a bunch of times and didn't catch anything like that, but good to know. For those registering, you might try transfering $ from your bank to your paypal a couple days ahead of time.

Yeah, it must be a policy change that happened just recently. They charged me like 2.9% + $0.30 IIRC. I didn't have to pay that back in Aug/Sep. though.

rstrucks

IIRC there are not that many spots remaining. Plus there are a few that say they are coming but have yet to register so it's just a matter of time before the cabin is full. BTW you won't get a "room", you'd get a "spot". Meaning a place to crash in a really nice cabin that sleeps 21. Cam (ATLZJ) can tell you how many spots are left as he's handling all the registration.

I drove up really early last year. (I'm in Franklin) It wasn't too bad except that I didn't remember that I'd change time zones until midnight the night before. That was an early morning!

It is an long drive for me so we are trying to get as much wheeling in as we can.

How long are folks planning to wheel on Sunday?

Like I said before, there are too many unknowns for me (mainly weather related) to commit until a few days before anyways, but just trying to assess my options. I'm giving serious consideration now that folks are talking about wheeling on Friday...

zj95maxx

I am for sure wheeling on friday. It is about 8 hours for me so I plan on heading out about noon on thursday, arriving that night (me, pat, my brother, his passenger) and camping or something thursday night.

I have talked to Cam about wheeling on friday and so far, he is down. I hope we can get some more people to come out early.

I want to wheel all day friday, all day saturday, then roll out sunday about noonish to get back to Richmond at a good time.

Weather is a big deal to me, because I don't like wheeling in the rain. But for the scale of this trip, and who all is going, and it being a new place, I dont care what the weather will be. It will be an experience that I will deal with whatever happens. If it rains, it rains and it will be cold, but there is probably a better chance on it snowing if anything.

Since Windrock is only 3 hours from home for me, I'll wheel til at least 2 or 3pm on sunday, if not til dark. As long as my rig is still together of course. Last year, some of us wheeled til mid afternoon and then headed home.

I will be getting back from an out of town trip on that Thursday. I'll try to make it there in time for some wheelin' on Friday as it's only about 3 hours from my place. I'm guessing if I wheel part of the day on Friday than I'll probably skip out on Sunday or vice versa.

Well I had broken more glass wheeling it since our last trip to Harlan and I have continually ran into alot of problems with the horrible departure angle holding me back on alot of trails. So now the tires will be sticking out past the body. I will still be able to put the doors on it when we ride in bad weather and from the front it will still look completely stock.

But I thought I would get that kind of reaction from alot of people.:D

Drake, glad to hear you're coming. You may have already seen this thread (http://mallcrawlin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21032), but there's a decent number of people bringing rigs with 31s-33s, and an equal number of people on the fence who may also bring similarly built rigs. There will be a few landcruisers, xtrerras, and of course ZJs/WJs running the mild and moderate trails.

I'm happy to hear that several of the people in the non-extreme group(s) have been to windrock and will be able to help show people around.

Drake
12-30-2009, 11:44 PM
Excellent. I'm relatively familiar with the southern half of the park but I've always followed when it comes to the trails in the northern half so I don't know them as well. I can't think of the numbers off the top of my head but there are 5 trails that you can make a loop out of in the southwestern corner of the park that's ideal for smaller tire rigs.

One thing I want to mention... even though you will see gas stations selling the park permits, do not buy from them. Only get your park pass at the snack shack. I just found this out back in October. The money made from the permits sold at gas stations is divided up and not all of it goes to Coal Creek/Windrock. Only the money from the permits bought at the shack is 100% returned to the park.

Even if I bring the zuk on 35's I'm probably running with the 31 crowd because I won't have time to test the new configuration out much before the trip. Only way I'm wheeling hardcore is if I bring the buggy, but that requires renting a truck (blah, I'm already broke!)

Drake
12-31-2009, 03:01 PM
The loop I led a group on back in October was relatively easy to moderate rated and well-suited for those with smaller than 33" tires. I had 3 xterras that were bonestock on 31" A/T's that handled most of them pretty well but there were some really nasty sections of #22 that slowed us down quite a bit but it was more of a traction issue than clearance. I ran it with a shot steering system and didn't further any damage.

Although I'm open-diff/IFS, if there is a group of smaller rigs or those that don't want to get too gnarly, I would be willing to lead them through the same loop one of the days (Friday or Saturday). But I'd like to have at least one rig with a winch in the group either behind me or as a tailgunner. The loop will take about 6 to 7 hours pending no major hang ups.

With that said, is it like harlan, Where i can follow the main trail and then watch the big boys play. Or is it like tellico where you actually have to wheel to get to the obstacle.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help on this.

To the big rig trails like Rattle Rock, American Knob and a few others, the gravel roads (G*) pass either the entrance or the exit to the trails. Rattle Rock exits onto a gravel road but I think you have to do a section of trail to get to the bottom/start. I'm not 100% on that because it's been a while since I've been around that one. I think a few of the easy/moderate trails pass a few other extreme trails like "Rail" and others up in the north end which I'm not that familiar with.

Just wondering but what trails did you take?

I take #22 from the parking lot out to where it ends at G5. Turn west and hit #35 and #36 to G6. Take it a few hundred yards north to #27 to where it meets #26 and turn east which will take you back to G5. I can't remember the exact distances other than #22 being 5.8 miles but normally when I take that loop, I leave out at around 9 and with a lunch break can be back between 4 and 5.

Here is a vid of an earlier run there. Most of the footage is on that loop I mentioned but I think sections of #5 and a few northern trails are in there too but in the last few minutes.

A couple things on the trails. Like Drake said, most of the harder trails are reasonably accessible for spectating from the access trails. I haven't run it yet, but I've heard Rail Trail is an all day commitment and is less viewable from the access roads. Don't you guys want to be wheeling rather than watching anyway? :D

About the structure of this event, we are very informal. This isn't the type of event where you show up and get your driver's bag, wristband, trail list and CB channel. It will be more of a show up, group up, and roll out type of thing... there's no itinerary. That said, it'll be pretty obvious who should wheel with who. And anyone who wants to step up and more formally organize for a certain ride level is welcome to.

I can't wait for this ride.

Yep I had planned to take off work on friday, drive up friday morning, and get a good shakedown in on my "new" rig. Hopefully that day won't turn into a chinese firedrill with me scrambling to get ready. But if everyting goes well, some big steps will be taken this week to getting me a lot closer to being trail ready.

23 days!

if youre coming here for GSSE would you be willing to let it ride along??

also if anyone wants to ride between now and GSSE, I would like to go pretty much any weekend between now and then just PM me.

I plan on heading up Friday morning too. Not sure how early yet as I'll be getting back from an out of town trip the night before. A shakedown run on my rig wouldn't hurt either as it doesn't look like I'll get a chance to any sooner.

there are plenty of hotels that are right off 40 that are less than 30 minutes from windrock, and there are a few in oak ridge that I'm sure you can get a room in. look at the holiday inn, marriott, and there's another one I can't remember exactly, all on cedar bluff and that's in Knoxville but less than 30 minutes from the snack shack at windrock.

Out of curiosity -- are there any sand or high-speed areas at this park?

Well it's 72,000 acres, so I'm sure you could find somewhere to open it up ;)

There's a TON of gravel roads and a few open dirt areas too. Might be some more areas up near the windmills, I'm not sure.

lol VA drivers in the snow.

Ryan what we do to tow trailers with skid steers in the snow with 2wd duallys is to just put on about 3000# in the bed of the truck. I can get around pretty good that way. Hell that last 18" snow I was pulling trailers in it no prob. The only down fall is when you break loose its a mother to try to get that truck stopped.

Yeah I've done that whole towing through a blizzard thing and it wasn't even close to fun. That drive normally takes 4 hours and it was closer to 6 or 7 because the first "hour" of driving took closer to 3 hours. I was in 4wd most of the way. There was literally a few inches of snow on the highway, so 2wd was just flat out scary even going 25 mph. I had to stop to refuel and I would have gotten stuck in the gas station if it wasn't for 4wd. This drive will be 11-12 hours if the weather cooperates, so we'll see.

I am mighty handy with trail break fixage:D

If I cant wheel(going to pray the titan is out..) then I would still like to go so my money isnt a waste

we are trying to be ready to wheel at 9am. meaning everyone with permits aired down, hangovers intact...

cam has posted this before but the snack shack is open from 7am to 6pm selling permits so if possible lets all try to get out permits ahead of time to avoid swamping the snack shack. its says on the website that permits are also available at the oak ridge exxon, it may be more convenient to purchase permits there as you arrive into town, especially if you are arriving after 6pm as im sure the large majority of you will be..
