Everybody get your shit working early, then don't break it before moab!

I WILL make it out next year. All I gotta do is re-gear the axles, add an aussie or two, finish my rear double tri four link, add some UHMW skids, and maybe some new tires. Then I'm set! Fourlink is first on the plans, It's almost ready to go in!

GSW here I come!

Sure. If you drive out from Maryland I can make a trip down. I haven't been going to moab but maybe 3 times a year now because I got tired of the crowds and wanted to check out some of the thousands of miles of other trails that are out there, but I can make a special trip ;)

We don't check for health insurance, that's on you. We do check for auto insurance.

My buggy had a re-issued VIN and was licensed as a 2002 Grand Cherokee ATV. I never drove it on the road (nor was it licensed for such) and at the time they didn't offer any insurance for this type of vehicle--and believe me I tried. Wheelin without insurance is stupid--especially in a buggy where the possiblity of a rollover injuring yourself, passengers, or spectators is much greater. Luckily there are a few agencies that do insure buggies now so it shouldn't be too difficult to find them and get it taken care of.

But, there are still those cheapskates that refuse to get the insurance and put themselves at risk. Probably the same people that build a trailer queen and then bitch that they can't drive it around on the streets without getting a ticket and whine when they have to shuttle back and forth to get their tow rig

You should totally get your ham. its so nice to have. 15.00 for your license (10 years) and a single band mobile is about 140.00. I was on a trail run in a canyon 20 miles outside reno, and I was talkin to a buddy of mine on simplex (which is like cb) 35 miles away crystal clear. :D

Cody

A lot of the guys I go wheelin with have them. We typically have 6-8 rigs on our overland style trips and each rig covers ground at it's own pace. Often time we'll be spread out over 5-10 miles, and the CB just doesn't quite cut it--especially from front to back.

Just need to get it done.

I would like to move to a HAM radio as well, I wonder if we could have everyone convert. Less overtalk or stepping on each other and better if there is an emergency and people need parts of help.

Think, we could have had Matt off the trail way earlier in '06 or was it '07.

out this way the only rigs that have insurance for the most part are ones that are streetable or started life as a street rig and still have tags on them. I would say about 60% of the rigs I come across on the trails have no tags on them (granted I would probly see more tagged vehicals if i ran easyier trails) i'm guessing about 99% of those with out tags have no insurance. Most insurance companies im familiar with at least on the east coast will not pay out if they find out the vehical was damaged or damaged someone else while offroading. Case in point I new some who got stuck in a field and left to go get some help. While he was gone his muffler set the grass on fire and burned his rig to the ground. Once the insurance company got wind of how it happened they refused to pay. Ive heard of atv/motorcycle insurance but i'm not sure if that would cover a jeep/buggy. I may have to look into that.

One good thing about owning two green zjs close in years is that I can switch tags back and forth giving me insurance on the trail rig for what its worth.

Do they have courses you have to take then? I've never looked into it, but it would be nice to have for sure.

The best way to study for the Technician class, is to go to qrz.com and take the Ham Technician tests.. there are 100+ questions to study (multiple choice.. as is the main test) and there are only 35 main questions. They are pretty much all common sense questions.

study for the test, log on to arrl.org, check to see when the next testing date is in your area. The test/license fee is 10.00 and that grants you a license for 10 years. :supz:

Also out west most of the roads we're on are actual county roads or USFS roads, so technically we are not actually "off-roading." I know many people who have had trail damage covered by their insurance.

nope not unless your trying to get your vehicle fixed in the process, with liability only they usually just take a phone statement because there's no need to look at the vehical.

....and insurance fraud is fun! :punish:
Again I guess its how you look at it, i payed them to insure one jeep zj, whats the difference if its got 32's on it or 36's with alot less sheet metal. They never run at the same time so i'm only driving one jeep zj which I payed them for. And on top of that they will only pay to fix the other persons car, so its not like i'm getting any more money for one jeep or the other.

technically by not telling some insurance companys you own a modified vehicle would be insurance fraud because they would want to charge you more.

Care to list any of these companies? Things may be different out west where wheeling is much more common, but here in the east, I don't think I've ever come across a buggy-friendly insurance policy. There was a lengthy thread on Pirate a few years ago about insuring a buggy, but it seemed that only the west coasters had any luck with it...

My ZJ has the bare minimum insurance coverage that NY allows, but I'd feel better about finding a buggy-specific policy.

curious, i did a quick search (local)

found an Allstate agent minutes from my house

Allstate, Boat Insurance, Business Insurance, Car Insurance, Home Insurance, Life Insurance, Motorcycle Insurance, Off-Road Vehicle Insurance, Renters Insurance, Snowmobile Insurance, Teen Driver Program

not sure what his ORV insurance covers, but i think i could pick up some basic liability coverage for a buggy if i had one

think about it from an insurance standpoint - what's the difference between a quad & buggy? wheelbase?

Not at all. Perhaps we're talking about two different things. Good chance of that.

I am saying if you take a 4000lb buggy 4-wheeling and it rolls over and hits 3 people, or a cable snaps while recovering, or etc...it'll do more damage then a 500lb ATV. Because of its ability to more easily cause more damage, it would have a higher insurance premium.

Cody
01-04-2010, 01:59 PM
No, other vehicles & people.

bingo.

I've seen a half dozen or more injuries related to rolling over on trails, and lots more in competition.

Say you have a random person riding along with you (it happens) and you put it over and they stick their arm out as a reflex, crush their arm. You're liable. I've seen fingers and arms smashed against the ground and roll cage, I've seen concussions (I had a guy riding with me get a concussion on an endo I did at GSW 02), I've seen major cuts that required stitches, I've seen a buggy hit an ATV on a back road, I've had close calls with motorcyles and mtn bikers, and other vehicles.

Do you want to be personally liable for any of those damages?

The insurance is out there, it's just a matter of finding it.

FortCollinsZJ

Anybody camp out for GSW?

It sure would save some $$$ if a guy could just stay in a tent.

There has to be some good places to setup a camp right?

Cody
01-04-2010, 02:42 PM
Depends. There are a few KOA style camp grounds in the city that have tent pads, or little cabins. the 'canyonlands" campground is actually right next door to the Redstone where a lot of people stay.

If you want a little more primitive but still convenient, you can stay up at Sand Flats which is about 5 minutes from town. It's more primitive, but still a developed camp area in a recreation area.

If you want primitive, there are some options, but most of the nice scenic ones will be 30-45 minutes from town. Kane Creek, dubinky well road, barlett wash etc.

It can get pretty hot though in june. By my guestimation a tent would be approximately 1,829 degrees by 9 a.m. ;) Being able to shower after a hot day on the trail is certainly a treat. My recomendation would be the Canyonlands camp ground as it will be less expensive than a hotel, has lots of shade trees, public showers, and is still in the thick of things.

Get back from a long 12+ hour day of wheeling in the hot ass sun, covered in sweat and red dust, there is nothing better then a shower. Actually if it is hot out, there is a creek just a few minutes outside of town that is awesome to relax in.

I'm not disputing the need for insurance! - My point was that it shouldn't be impossible to get. How the Fuck did this conversation get turned upside down?

Insurance rates are based on STATISTICS not "I saw this or I saw that or my buddy's rig is a POS and he might roll over", etc.

Compare the total number of insurance claims for accidents and deaths from busy urban roadways against the actual number of off road buggy accidents. Insurance rates also take into consideration the number and $$ amount of claims.

And of course don't forget the individual's driving record. Should there be a requirement to pass additional driver testing (something similar to getting a CDL?)

If I were to insure a buggy, I would require some type of standardized vehicle inspection or certification (something similar to automobiles in most states).

It sure would save some $$$ if a guy could just stay in a tent.

There has to be some good places to setup a camp right?

Damn I feel down. Freezing rain outside, gray, had to put the Beagle to sleep.

Normally this is the time I start looking forward to GSW, but due to lack of funds I can only do this once this year. And since my oldest will be in Afghanistan during GSW, I told him I will wait till he gets back and try to go in October. He is out spending the last two weeks in intensive ground combat training, probably at Ft Bragg in preparation. So we hope when he gets back they do not stick him in the base Nuke rotation because then he cannot come out till next November-December.

So here I am burnt out, at least 9 more months before I can go Jeeping and its freezing rain outside. Good thing I dont work at a post office. Maybe I can find some flies to pull their wings off. Yeh thats the ticket.

Way to go, Tyler!!

No more strapping down the body on the trailer for me, just the axles. There were all kinds of cracks in the unibody (just at the front and back) where I had tied down the tube bumpers - with some separation, driver's side rear, by as much as an inch!! We welded the larger ones up - now the spare tire carrier doesn't bounce so much. :D

I spent the last 5 weeks trying to get the dang thing through emissions. NOx, CO failed the first time, so I did the additive thing and ran through the tank of gas that had been sitting in it since last fall - and it failed worse. Replaced the cat and 02 sensors, and did a tune-up/fluids and finally passed.

That was the easy part though - because the VIN and selector in the cab indicate I have all-time 4WD, the emissions station people in Broomfield kept wanting to put me on the all-time 4WD equipment - this thoroughly confused one lady in particular. "Sir until I understand the modifications you've done to your vehicle I don't feel it safe for us to test it". I said I had a different transfer case, and her eyes glazed over. I pointed out that I had been there two weeks earlier when she was there and it went safely through, this didn't make any difference. I asked her what had changed - turned out she had been promoted to manager. She gave me the card for some inspector and said I needed to go get a "form" first.

15 mintes later I was at the testing station in Thornton - they saw I had 35" tires on the front and 28" tires on the rear and realized I couldn't be all-time 4WD - and they put me through.

I do like the Broomfield DMV though - as in the past, there were no lines, a kind lady said "may I help you" and I sat down, and literally two minutes later I was out the door and SCAMPER was registered once more!

Anyway, I now have a new waterpump too - I started it up in the driveway last week and the green/yellow started dripping dead-center from the oil pan. Glad it happened at my house and not in Moab later this month!!

Which is better than losing control of a trailer due to a bouncing/swaying rig on it ;)

If I remember correctly you have a pretty set up tow rig so that helps out a lot, but when I towed a lot I would only strap the axles when pulling from trail to trail, and I would pull the suspension down in addition to the axles when towing long distances. I could notice a pretty major difference between the two.

SCAMPER ZJ
03-14-2010, 06:03 PM
Which is better than losing control of a trailer due to a bouncing/swaying rig on it ;)

I agree!! However when I tested it out at highway speeds, even going around some turns and hitting bumps it seemed to do fine with just the axles secured. I use the the flat snap hooks, so I'm not really worried about anything coming undone (just picked up a new set too), and the trailer itself is pretty beefy (3,500 lb dual axle PJ) so I don't feel the ZJ throws it around that much.

I reserve the right to change my mind though, and I'll be bringing extras to cinch down the body if things get too bouncy back there, or if I'm trailering in slick conditions. The 5-mile road tests I did aren't necessarily representative of the actual mountain miles between here and Moab!

All I can say is, I'm glad Glenwood Canyon is open again (http://www.postindependent.com/article/20100311/VALLEYNEWS/100319973/1083&ParentProfile=1074) - that would have been a LONG detour to get to my pre-GSW Moab run!!

It's not the normal situations that I would be at all concerned about. It's the 1.2 seconds of a emergency maneuver that I would worry about. 99.98% of the time with a tow rig like you have you'll be fine, but when you really need all the control you can get......that's when it makes a difference.

At least you're conscious of it. That's better than most.

You would think thier management would have to take some kind of a class so that they could understand basic aftermarket upgrades - especially given that 4-wheelin is so popular around here and just about everyone with a Jeep has done something to it.

So are you going to be moving to AL too?

I think I will have to work Thursday until 2 or so. As soon as I get off, I will have the jeep loaded and be heading out. Could only get Friday through Sunday off but I am happy I could get that.

Let me know if you need help, I am going to Denver the weekend of the 8th but should be pretty free after that.

And a side question, if I add a passenger last minute is that ok? Could they sign the waiver at GSW on Thursday or does it need to be done now?

Patience please. I know Dave has been extremely busy lately, but I think his time should be freeing up shortly, he should be able to start verifying stuff soon. If he needs my help to get him over his busy period, I'll pick up the wiavers and payments and start verifying stuff myself.

Maybe I missed it with all the disucsions of insurance fraud and beer cheese soup, which is pretty good by the way. What are the trails your running? I may come out Fri and Sat but would like to know where the runs are going.

Bob,

I was probably a little too aggressive in setting the cut off date. If you can get your waiver and payment to Dave within the next 7 days, you're in. This goes for anyone else who's been on the fence but can now commit. Get your stuff in by May 10 and you'll be welcome.

Cody
05-04-2010, 04:32 PM
...and these dates aren't just arbitrary things set by the planners to be difficult. We have to finalize permit and insurance issues with the BLM and STLA prior to the event, and order food for the banquet.

GSW is no longer limited to a specific number of Jeeps because we get BLM permits and insurance. The missed deadline is the bigger issue.

It would have been better to register and cancel than to try and register 2 weeks prior to the gathering date. I'll let one of the other planners weigh in and answer your question.

Do you have to choose the trails you want to run before you get there? I was hoping to talk to a couple of people before choosing since I've never been to Moab and the trail names mean nothing to me.

CrawlerReady

You should be fine choosing the morning of the trail-ride. They give a good explanation of each trail each morning so people can decide then.

After getting back from a 400 mile (total) trailer pull with the Heep, discovered that the parking brake shoes were blitzed - right side fell right off the backing when I pulled the rotor to check out a noise.

Replaced the shoes, better run them for a few miles tomorrow to let the smoke out.

Tomorrow, making 1 last bolt check and loading it up on the trailer. Heading out Wednesday afternoon after the wife and I put in a half day at work. Should put me in Moab around 7-8 pm.
