I got the approval from the land lord to put in a 230v outlet in the garage, so on Wednesday I'm going to have an electrician buddy help me install one. I'm gonna pick up the Hobart 187 from Tractor Supply for 599.

What else do y'all suggest picking up at the same time? What's a decent mask? I work at Lowe's so I get a discount from there. Any Kobalt mask that's decent? I'm going to stay flux core to start just to keep overall start up costs down. I'll pickup a tank in the next few weeks depending on hours at work.

don't go flux, why get such a good welder to weld with flux. Save and get some gas and .30 wire.

make sure to get a bunch of extra tips.

I'll get it just as soon as I can, hopefully this week or next. It comes in from TSC next week. I had them let me use a 10% off coupon on it.

Next question. Wiring.

It requires a Nema 6-50R outlet. At peak it requires 21ish amps. I was told by numerous people on the Hobart Forums that running a 30 amp breaker to that outlet style is alright. Do I need to run a 50 amp breaker? If I'm doing 30 amp, I'm going to to do 10-2. If 50amp, 8-2.

Found a guy selling a bunch of them.

160 cubic foot tank, 100% full Argone/CO2, in certification - $170
160 cubic foot tank, 100% full Argone, in certification - $180
40 cubic foot tank, 100% full Argone, in certification - not for sale
20 cubic foot tank, ?% full Argone, - $35
20 cubic foot tank, empty CO2, out of cert - $10
40 cubic foot Aluminum tank, empty (Nitrogen), out of cert - $40
~240 cubic foot tank, empty (Helium), out of cert - $40
~300 cubic foot tank, ?% full Nitrogen, out of cert - $60
80 cubic foot, ?% full unknown gas, out of cert - $20 (silver, tall, narrow tank)

I'm thinking the 80 cubic foot tank. Unless y'all think recert plus gas on that would be more than the 160 cubic foot tank.

So can y'all critique my welds? I'm buying a 60 cuft tank next week, so these are with .30 flux core. All four were with different heats and feed rates. And yes, I know, I should have prepared the surfaces.

Both of those were 1/4 steel to 1/8. I'm just playing around with scraps.

Went and got that Hobart mask that everyone recommended as well.

Your heat is too high (undercut). Your wire speed is too low (visable pattern) and you aren't moving fast enough (just a hunch).

Where do you live now? Looks like you moved out of U-House haha

try hitting the macro button on your camera for starters.

CLEAN clean substrate is like half the battle. flap wheel everything before you weld to shiny clean metal. wirewheel is NOT enough.

don't see much sense in critiquing til you've done everything the best you can, including surface prep.

congrats on the new tool.

Just realized I never replied.

I haven't had much time to play with it this semester, so I've only used it a couple times after those pictures.

I'm out of U-house but that's at my parents. They've got a garage vs. my apartment without one, haha.
