This year's Grand Slam Southwest will have a different "feel." Because of the land use issues some of you may be aware of and the paths our lives take we as a planner's group decided to hold an event this year but in a different perspective.

This 2009 the event will be held the first weekend of October (October 2, 3 and 4, 2009) in the Sedona Arizona area. Similar to last year's event.

We will have a broader trail list than last year. For my rig is running for the most part.

Meeting location will be the Safeway parking lot in Sedona at 8:30 AM, found at: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=safeway+sedona+arizona&sll=37.439974,-95.712891&sspn=35.749336,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=34.866215,-111.79872&spn=0.008644,0.013733&z=16&iwloc=A

We will not be holding a raffle for prizes. And our "banquet" will most likely be a simple dinner with friends. I will work on a getting a group rate for a hotel after a simple count of those who are thinking of attending.

So with the dates and location above. Who would be thinking of attending? Please post your interest below...:welcome:

I would like to attend depending on if my rig is built enough for the trails you are running.

Well, slight change of plans for us. My wife has gotten to the point she does not trust my ZJ to make the 1000 mile trip to Sedona.

So we just pulled the trigger on an 05 Hemi Limited. It was one that my son-in-law bought and we upgraded it with a 3" lift and some Rubicon JK wheels & tires.

I'm thinking that with a little more undercarriage protection that we could still do the Sedona trails with very little problem.

What do you guys think?

chadjans
08-04-2009, 06:59 PM
Are you bringing the ZJ or the JK? Either would be fine for the area.

I have been thinking how much all the new round-a-bouts are going to suck pulling my trailer around.

Chad may be busy. You should have no problem with the trails that have been offered in the past if they are offered again this year---mostly scenic with some optional "stuff".

Skids and rockers would be needed. But a WK will be fine.

Trail options:

Brutal, Smasher canyon, Broken Arrow, Cliffhanger, Greasy Spoon, House Mtn, Soldier's Pass, Smiley Rock, and maybe a few others here and there.

No specific itinerary yet.

Previous years we have paired trails to allow two shorter trails to be run on the same day. Brutal, smasher canyon, and Smiley rock most likely will be full days.

Weather is finally starting to approach less than surface of the sun hot, so we should be on track for another comfortable trip.

I will be making it this year, but will be rig-less. My WJ is being transitioned to its new owner.

So, I may be riding with ZJ Vato (Mark) for part of the weekend (if he comes), or be looking for a passenger's seat.

Well, there will still be one in the family... just not owned by me. I recently picked up an 86 CJ7, sprung over with a 350 Chevy and a 96 Powerstroke crew cab, so the WJ has got to go. Yes, the Jeep that I would never sell is on it's way out. I know that I will miss it a ton.

We will not be holding a raffle for prizes.

I'm just checking a final time before I finish packing to see if there is any change in the above, i.e. that there will be no goodie bags and no raffle. Still the case?

Well as it stands right now I am not sure if we are going to be able to make it.
I had to have an epidural steroid injection yesterday. And I am still in a lot of pain.
So unless a miracle happens so that all of my leg and back pain goes away we won't be making the trip to Sedona.

G-

South of Sedona (between Sedona and Cottonwood) would be the best spots. Take the Cottonwood Exit (Camp Verde), Rte 260 West, then 89A north. About 4 (?) miles South of Sedona turn onto an Eastbound or Westbound Forest Rd and park wherever you like. Eastbound is much smaller (but prettier), West is larger, more options, but less privacy. If you pass the water treatment facility or the turn for Red Rock State Park, then you have gone too far. There are also campgrounds on Page Springs Rd: closer to wineries, but farther away from Sedona... still only a 10 min. drive from the morning meeting spot.

I will likely be tent camping at least 1 night on the East side of 89A, across from the Water treatment plant. It is also the exit road for the Cliffhanger trail.

Eric,

Thanks for the info. I am pretty sure i know what your talking about.. i just looked it up on google maps... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=cliffhanger+trail+sedona,+az+&sll=34.838745,-111.836185&sspn=0.09623,0.15398&ie=UTF8&ll=34.821695,-111.885109&spn=0.024063,0.038495&t=h&z=15

Looks like the 89B FS Rd is what your talking about, and looks to be the end of the cliffhanger trail i think.

I am sure i will see you up there! Sorry to hear about you selling the dub.. if it were a year ago, i would have been taking that sucker off your hands. Did you still have stock axles in that, or do a swap?

Kevin, I won't be coming down until Fri morning. I plan on camping near the end of Cliffhanger, where you guys camped 2 years ago with Dan, Bryant, and Doug. As you drive in off of 89A there are some better sites on the left side of the primary forest thru-road, off of the little loop.

See you on Friday!

Alright, I got talked into "not-quite-so-primitive" camping at Dead Horse Ranch State Park...where we were last year for GSSW. It worked out really well last year with showers and all, and it's only another 10 minutes or so further than the Cliffhanger spot we camped in two years ago...less if you figure it takes 5 or so minutes to get from camp to the highway. Want to join us over there, Eric and Greg?

Here's the link for anyone interested in camping with the seven of us: http://azstateparks.com/Parks/DEHO/map.html

Im down. we'll have to use one of the pull through rv sites.. 1st come 1st serve, so i hope they have spaces available by the time we get there.
