someone is selling locally a trailer frame for dirt cheap with dual 2500lb axles, but the wheels are only 58 inches across, can i make drive over fenders for this and use it to tow my jeep or is it to narrow?

could i widen the frame or is the wheel base too narrow?

That's really narrow. what part of the tires is 58" inches apart? inside, outside, or center?

My trailer's deck was about 81" wide originally... I have since widened it to about 87" to fit my rig. My waggy 44 with 37 Iroks used to measure 82" outside of tire to outside of tire. Now my 60 measures 85" outside of tire.... obviously wheel backspacing comes into play here also. But seeing as how most rigs track widths are in the 70+" range, 58" might be hard to make work.

im not 100% sure they said the inner part of the tire. im going tomorrow to go look at it, at this price i need to at least check it out. assuming that the track width is only like 60 inches is this going to make it too narrow and unstable?

Did you mean "dual 5200lb axles"? What was the trailer's purpose?

Either way it sounds a bit too narrow. If it is 58" between the fenders you might have enough overall width for it to be ok. I'd want it at least as wide as the rig that will sit on it for stability reasons.

yeah i think it might be too narrow aswell, but its worth checking out and measure it myself

It looks reasonably well built. What is the axle rating? You could possibly build some wheel tubs that drop into the floor to lower your COG. Keep in mind you'll have to probably rewire, add flooring, brakes? (cant tell in the pic but I don't see a break-away battery) and lighting. You could always just swap out some standard width axles too.

canadian driver, come on down, you're the next contestant on..............

the axle ratings are 3500lbs each and 72 inches from wms to wms, according to the numbers i took off the axles.

no break away battery, defiantly needs a rewire, brakes seem in OK condition, i should have enough spare 2x6s around to make a floor for next to nothing.

Look like an old holiday trailer to me thats been stripped down to the frame.

I almost bought one awhile back in similar shape. I started doing the math on what it would cost to build it up to a car hauler.

Fir deck, rewire, break away kit, ramps......

By the time it was all said and done there was about $1200-$1500 in supplies needed PLUS my labour. That put the whole thing over $2000 which would get me an already built car hauler.

The big costs were the deck and ramps. I was pricing out high quality wood and screws. Also metal is expensive. I built a ramp for my landscaping trailer last year. Measured about 4X6 with expanded metal, cost me about $200CDN in materials.

Call around, get some prices then you'll know if its a good buy or not.....

You need to find a good metal recycler in your area. I rebuilt the entire deck on my 20' x 102" trailer for 1G. That included all materials, wiring, paint, and LED lights. Oh, and a shit ton of labor...
