I have an '03 WJ 4.0. I'm looking to get a little more response when I get on the skinny. What's the best way to get some more power without breaking the bank?

I'm looking for a shade tree upgrade here nothing too involved.

Find a guy that has a v8 that's looking for better gas mileage. Trade keys.

Start with the basics. A Fresh tune up, Intake and exhaust.

are intake and exhaust really going to make a noticeable difference?

Sell vehicle with 4.0
Buy vehicle with 4.7.

Have more power.

Remove 2000 lbs of vehicle weight. Stroke it. Move to sea level (wait you're already there).

More realistically, a tuneup, bored TB, WJ intake, header, and port and polish will help a lot. I am in the process of doing the above on my 175k 4.0... Just as a temporary measure to squeeze a little more power out of it before I swap in another engine that eclipses the mediocre v8s mentioned in this thread.

If you're looking for easy, a TB spacer and window decals fit the bill. But remember your gains will be directly proportionate to the amount of effort involved.

the three that affected me the most was a intake upgrade, but do the dino savvo cheap upgrade, bored throttle body (ebay $45 to have it done to your TB) and replace OEM cat with a high flow cat.

...and window decals fit the bill.

each engine related upgrade sticker is worth 2ft pounds of torque and 4 horse power

add a rocket motor.

seriously though: stroker, supercharger/turbo, bigger motor. or intake + exhaust, bored throttle body, bigger cam, computer programed, head work, roller rockers, upgraded ignition. blah blah blah....

also gearing... i dont know your tire size so...

or you could paint flames on the side, that will make it look faster:supz:

3.73 gears and 255 70 R16. I want more power before I put on the IRO 3". I'll prob stick with the gears and upgrade to larger ATs

suggestions for exhaust and intake?

I HATED my 4.0. It was the reason I sold my zj. It couldn't do 55 uphill. If it had been a v8, I'd still have it. The only time I've ever driven a 4.0 ZJ that was fast was one that had no interior, doors, tailgate, dash, or carpet. It could at least get out of its own way.

You want my 2 cents? Sell it now and get a v8. You'll never ever get anything better out of the 4.0 unless you stroke it. Especially if you start adding armor and equipment. You'd probably even get better mpg with the v8.

Sell the 4.0 dub and get a 5.2 ZJ. But I'm not biased at all :smt023
