Is this the same "Harlan" that everyone talks about -- I thought it was just a public trail system and not a "park"? Or is this an offroad park that just happens to be in Harlan, KY?

SirFuego

Nevermind. I found my answer. I didn't realize that the trails in Harlan actually had a real name.

ATL ZJ

OK to get it out of the way early, here is all the info you need about permits, etc.

Earlier this year, Harlan put a permit system into place. You will need to buy a permit in order to wheel. They are $20/month or $35/year. Right now those are the only options I believe. You can mail-order your permit ahead of time by contacting either Kim Collier or Amanda Freeman at 606-573-4495 OR you can purchase one when you arrive in Evarts at Buddy's Chevron station.

Where is Evarts? you ask... Handy google maps link (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Evarts,+KY&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=50.644639,79.101563&ie=UTF8&z=15&iwloc=A)

Camping is at the South Evarts campground. Spots run $20/night for a site with water, 110v and 220v hookups, plus access to the bath house. You can split sites with other people/tents/rigs because they are designed to fit a fullsize RV, and it is cheaper for everyone. When you pull into Evarts (coming from Harlan) look for this on your right, as you are crossing the bridge.

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/Whiten_photos/harlan09/harlan09051.jpg

That's it for now. I'll post up a separate "who's coming" thread sometime in June.

WTF permit?:smt074

ATL ZJ
05-06-2009, 04:09 PM
Yeah the permit thing started in Feb or so. Long story short, the Harlan park board got the 25 year lease on the property that they were hoping for. The permits are just a small part of that deal. It costs money to maintain the trails, build new ones, and keep signs up, etc. $35 a year is a drop in the bucket compared to the coin we put into our rigs. The permit comes out to be not even 10 cents a day. How can you complain about that.

rstrucks
05-06-2009, 06:17 PM
Not to get off topic or anything but I think a small fee is a good thing. It brings in some money for the area, along with the increased revenue that gas stations, hotels, restaurants, etc. see, and may make other areas take a second look at providing an OHV park so they can partake in this revenue source.

I'll happily pay. It's nothing compared to what it costs me to ge my car on a racetrack!

I don't wanna jinx it or anything but it looks like I'm in again this year. Work gave me the time off already. I got my 5.9 in and it seems work. Exhaust is supposed to be on it by Friday and I'm making an easy day run the next day in UNF for a shakedown run. I found out my outer 60 shafts have stretched u-joint ears and I ordered alloys to replace them but the outers (what I need) are on back order around the world so hopefully they'll be here in time. They're saying middle of June so.. In the mean time the caps are welded in so it'll stop trying to spit them out. My buddy who towed my junk up there last year is bringing his own rig this year too since he got his big axles in now and I have my own tow rig & trailer. Anybody looking to convoy from Fayetteville, Raleigh or anywhere else on my way, let me know. It'll be good to see everybody again. Hopefully the camp grounds will be dry this time.

Front coilover hoops, bump stops, front driveshaft, rear driveshaft, rework exhaust, brake lines, complete full hydro system, build front fenders of some kind, final paint, test run, trim some more of the tub, hope it all holds together.

Something new for this year... We're giving away this plate to whoever travels the farthest to attend GSSE. The person who either tows or drives their rig the most miles to attend will be the winner. You must bring a rig to be eligible to win and be able to tell us how many miles you drove to get there.

Ha OK... here's the "registration" thread. (http://www.mallcrawlin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19826) Called the "hit list" based on the comments in this thread. ;) There's no registration fee or anything like that- just post up so we can expect you.

Also... someone mentioned that we haven't said how we'll divide into different ride levels/groups. Rather than drawing lines based on tire sizes, etc. it may be easier to wait and group up at the campground in Evarts around 9am on Friday morning (or Saturday morning if you can't come Friday). It'll be fairly obvious who should ride together.

Casey (greyjeep93) has stepped up to lead a moderate group, so we are in good shape there. There is a TON of acreage in the park, so it should be easy to match everyone with appropriate trails. 30 days!

They are within stumbling distance of the campground too if you don't want to miss the evening festivities or have to load your rig up and haul back into the town of Harlan (closest motel). Just throwing that out there in case anyone prefers A/C and a bed.

For anybody planning on camping... it's first come first serve. If you want to reserve a site, the phone number is 877-737-0778 and ask for Debbie.

I reserved sites 3 and 4, which are pretty much in the center of the campground, between the creek and the dairy hut. Not that the campground is big enough for it to matter- you can walk a lap around the whole thing in 2 minutes. But if you reserve a site no one will ask you to move because you came in late and picked a site that someone else reserved for the next night. ;)

There will probably be other guys arriving from OH and SC on Thursday late afternoon (that haven't posted on here) and they may want to hit the trails for a few hours on thursday evening.

Otherwise, I'd say just have your permit taken care of and be fueled up and ready to roll on friday morning.

My "left to do" list is getting shorter. I still have to figure out driveshafts, modify the exhaust for DS clearance, install full-circle u-joint clips, figure out my steering, trim the rear fenders, make a track bar and both brackets, do some wiring, and a bunch of other "little things" that end up soaking up time.

i think that gas station that cam is talking about stays open till 9

yeah I think they are open moderately late. The best place to get them is the chevron 1/4 mile up the road from the campground. Just make a left out of the campground and you will see it on your right. Takes about 5-10 minutes to fill out the paperwork and pay your $35. Of course you can pay $20 for the month but if you decide to come back within the next year, you'll have to pay again. Plus it's cheap as dirt and the $ goes to keeping the trails open, so if you are on the fence, I'd recommend paying for a whole year.

Please try to have your permit completed, sticker on to your rig, and be fueled up by 9am on friday if you are riding that day. So if they aren't open late at night when your arrive thursday, try to make a point to head up there first thing in the morning.

Apparently they are selling permits at the trailhead also on fridays and saturdays now, but the most efficient way is probably to tackle the permits independently before we all leave the campground together. We aren't super uptight about much but please respect everyone else's time and get your permit taken care of early. sorry if that sounds lame but I want everyone to get as much wheeling in as possible. :D

Alright, less than a week before some of yall will be leaving... Here are a few details.

-Mapquest directions or set your GPS to "KY-38, Evarts KY"

-If you're camping and haven't reserved a spot, pick one when you arrive that doesn't have a reserved sign on it. they'll come around and collect $ in the morning. They take checks and cash.

-I'll be the goofy tall guy driving the beat up black and silver thing. And camping by the gray titan at sites #3, #4.

-As mentioned, bring your beverages of choice.

-As also mentioned, try to have your permits before 9 friday.

-The campground has 110 and 220 hookups, so you can bring any tools you want.

-Finding the campground in the dark- If you're coming east on KY-38 (away from Harlan), when you enter Evarts you'll cross a bridge and see the Dairy Hut on your right... the campground is directly behind it. It looks like this.

I called up there yesterday and here's what I was told by Debbie...

2 Different camping areas...

1 - North Park
$10/night per tent. This is a grassy area w/ shade for those wanted to "pitch a tent"! haha. Includes wireless internet, bath house, fire wood and is about a min. drive from the south park. But is where everyone stages for each days run and is the closest of the two to the trail head.

2 - South Park
$20/night per site. Doesn't matter how many camp in that site as its the site you're paying for...not what's in it. It's gravel/dirt area w/out shade. Does include, power, water, cable hook ups plus a bath house, firewood, and wireless internet.

I for one am going to be sleeping in a tent so I'm going to stay at the "North Park" b/c it's cheaper, has grass and shade of which the south park section doesn't. I've never been at a camp ground that actually provided firewood free of charge. I usually pull up w/ about a half bed of firewood for the weekend. I'm looking forward to it!!!

good info from debbie. I've heard good stuff about the north campground also, just never stayed there.

You said that the north park is where everyone stages, but we'll be grouping up and leaving from the south park. Chances are you'll need to head over to get fuel/permits/ice/breakfast anyways. hope that's not too inconvenient... don't want anybody to get left behind either.

sweet jeebus man, good luck with that... you gonna be able to leave tomorrow?

I should be able to. I just finished up the balljoints. Boy was it ever a pain in the ass. I've gotta go over a few things on the ass-10 tomorrow. I took off work because of the balljoint fiasco. So I should be gtg. However, I have at least 1 possibly 2 softball games tomorrow evening. I haven't decided yet whether I'm gonna play or not. If I do play, it will put me in Evarts around 11 or 12 tomorrow night. I'll give you a shout tomorrow and let you know what's up dude.

Cool, take spot 3 or 4 if you are planning on splitting one of the sites I reserved with trey. me and kirby will take the other. kirb might beat you there or be right behind you, so maybe yall can cruise around together because he wants to get a little testing in before the real wheeling starts on friday.

IIRC friday at gsse last year was a slop fest too, remember how slick lower middle rockgarden was? oh well, sounds like fun anyway, i just hope it stays dry for our drive up later.. i really don't want to have to put all the campin gear inside the truck, or sleep on a wet sleeping bag...
