any MCer's from the Northeast interested in heading out to GSW 09?

I'm seriously considering taking the trip out this year while gas prices are still manageable.

I live minutes from where I95 crosses the Delaware River at the PA / NJ state line.

I prefer not to make the trip solo. Let me know.

How many days are you planning to drive out there and back? How many days are you staying there? Would you be going down 70 most of the way?

Google Maps = 2114 miles / 32 Hours

I want to arrive Thursday (June 4) mid-day so I would make my trip plans accordingly.

Raw travel time breakdown: (from 19067 – just outside Philly)

3 day travel time = 704.6 miles / 10.6 hours per day

4 day travel time = 528.5 miles / 8 hours per day

route:

476N (from Philly) to pickup 80W (just north of Hazleton)

80W to Colorado border – split off 80W to 76W near border

76W to 70W in Denver

70W to 191S in Utah

I plan to stay all 3 days – June 5, 6, and the 7th (if this is a 3 day gig)

Head back either Monday or Tuesday (maybe Tuesday – I would like to spend Monday decompressing, prepping for the ride east, and checking out some of the local stuff – picture taking, etc)

Of course this is all tentative

I'm not sure I'd use the term "survive" to describe Matt's trips out here!! LOL

Yeah... Year one: rear ring KABOOM. Year two: unibody KABOOM. Year three: truck trailer and buggy KABOOM.

It's really not fair to compare GSMW in Attica, IN to GSW in Moab, UT. Trust me, I've done both spots (wheeled Attica in a smaller group, never as a GS). If GSW is something you want to do (and can afford to do) and GSMW is getting in the way, DROP GSMW faster than a virgin gets off his first time.

....unless you like body damage from trees, pinstriping, mosquitos, and mud. :smt021

Just my $.02

Your right, its not right to compare the two but the price tag on the GSW makes the gsmw look a whole lot better. Hopefuly next year things will be a little better when it comes to money.

Yup.

With all the different things going on out there from government agencies to greenies, the sooner you can get out there the better.

I agree – I feel a sense of urgency to get out there this year + the timing feels right

There's a chance I'll make it out there this year... but it depends on a lot of thigns, so don't quite count me in ;)

Agreed on the urgency thing but money is a major factor right now with trying to put the 60's under the jeep.

it's all good joe, everyone's time frame is different - i've been chomping at the bit for a few years now to make this trip.

the rubicon is also on my to-do list.

Agreed, been wanting to get out there for quite some time now. I'll be heading out spring 2010. Afraid to put it off any longer..

How is the Jeep's road drive for thousands of highway miles? Seems like it might be nice to have the insurance of the trailer in case something goes bad or you need extra space for spares, etc. I don't trailer mine because I don't have a truck but there are at least a half dozen times I was shitting bricks on whether I'd make it back because shit went wrong and I worried about having or being able to get the parts I needed or being able to fix or replace what was acting up. Actually, seems like every freaking year I'm sweating over something. Shit, I need a truck and trailer!

What are your travel / return dates, and I assume you're taking 70 west out there (which is 15 miles out my back door...)

...playing with the idea. That's a lot of fuel in ther 5.9 though, it'd add up to about a dozen wheeling trips in the Northeast, gotta think about it. The older I get the more I hate paying for things that disappear (liquid gold.)

I make no secret of the fact that the reason I make GSW trips is to score some free beer from Cody. That's fucking money in your pocket man.

I bet if you got 4 or 5 of you together, you could pay a car transport, and drive one vehicle out and save money...just a thought...maybe even rent a 16 passenger van and have a mega road trip party...

If mediocre home-brewed suds is all it takes to get you guys to drive across the country, then I can do that.

And if my brews are good enough to get someone to drive across the country, I'm obviously in the wrong line of work.

Jeepin' Wolf
11-28-2010, 05:05 PM
Well I kept rather meticulous record of that so yea that's all of it, including 3 days of bumming around Attica afterwards. I clocked a bit over 5k miles, my O/C said 11.9 mpg avg at the end, and the fuel along the way was ~2.30-$2.70. So yea sounds about right

Thanks. I knew you didn't take a direct route home and I didn't know if that was total with that and wheeling.

No matter how you do it, it is expensive, and would put a big dent in the down payment for that 4 door JK rubi I want as a DD.

My buddy just picked up a call of duty edition and debadged it, I think I"m in love. The real driving factor is I have too many vehicles, and the kind of wheeling I do any more can be done in a 4 door JK / daily driver. The Corolla is cheap and reliable but I've developed some back problems its not kind too.
The JK seats are comfy...mmmmmm
