Fuck it. I am going to pick this rig up in June.... More pics and a build thread to follow when I get it home.

Gorgeous chassis. who built it? wheelbase?

Tommy
05-12-2009, 12:05 PM
Thanks guys! I like the look of the chassis as well.

It is a modified Spirdertrax STX chassis. The wheelbase is currently set to 103". I would like to get it in the 106" to 107" range if I can. I think I need it a little longer to work well at the HAMMERS?

That would be fun but I would definetly need rocker and tail end protection. Here is a picture of mine. I could take my son's MJ that we just put in a HP 44 and my custom long arm kit.

Tommy

More than just some scrap tube may find it's way into this thing. I have a fuel injected 5.2.... HMMM...

It will be a sad day when I cut up my ZJ and load it in the back of my pick up to be recycled.

I know, the thing that keeps me hanging onto my unijuggy is sentimental as much as anything else. Crawling over an obstacle remembering back about those times in high school and college with some girl, in this thing... haha

Oh did I say I am jealous of your chassis?

Yep, keeping both. I need something that has four seats so I can bring my wife and two little girls. The Scrambler suits that job well. I can still wheel the piss out of it and drive it back. Plus I can cruise the mini malls by my house.

Is the 6.0 in the background the one for your buggy or the scram?

300s are overrated. I'm guessing (based on the price) that the d300 lomax gears do not replace the case housing itself like their kit for the 205 does. Since the case is the 300's achilles' heel, go Atlas.

MoonWorks
10-05-2009, 01:00 AM
My vote would be for the Atlas as well. Building the 300 up is a little cheaper but other than a little cost difference...I don't see any advantages to the 300 at all. Plus w/ a new Atlas...it will come with a warranty so it could actually save you money in the end.

SirFuego
10-05-2009, 09:14 AM
Atlas. You already broke the 300 didn't you? Time to upgrade :)

Tommy
10-05-2009, 10:46 AM
That is the 6.0 for my buggy.

I am thinking ATLAS as well. I will have to see how things pan out. Either way it is going to cost me some coin. At least I got this break out of the way and so close to home. Would have brought even more of the suck if it was at the Hammers....

Thanks bro. Just sent you a PM with my new number.

Crossmember is in, still need some plating. I also removed the interior in prep for the cage. I am going to need to modify the trans tunnel becuase my drivetrain height. I currently have 28" clearance at the belly. When I get to linking it I plan on lowering it about 4" or more.
I need to order a my DOM and seats this week.

Belly skid will be built off of this crossmemeber. All completely removable for service.. Skid will be totally flat. So somebody give me a cookie for doing something already done before...

Should be seeing some progress here soon. Atlas 5.0 and cable shifters on order from Matt at MoonWorks. I like supporting the vendors on the board. And Matt has been great. DOM for the new cage is scheduled for delivery on friday.

I plan on building the new battery/computer mount on friday. Then we will be ready for wiring and plumbing.

This showed up in my driveway today...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y124/Tommy_M/76067ffc.jpg

I am not sure that I like this contraption. But it will work. I still have to mount the ecu and the BTF battery tray I have. Battery isn't going to move... There seemed to be something up with my welder today, or the operator. Another reason I really don't like it that much. Maybe when it is painted and the ecu and battery are mounted I will change my mind.

I don't have much info on it. I have wheeled with the owner in Moab. I know it was built by Offroad Evolition. There are a bunch of pics online. Put these in the search bar, Terra Crawler, RCH, Hagel. I believe the rigs has been sponsored by K&N for the ultimate adventure. Offroad EVO had a build thread on the JK forum on pirate. But all of the pics are gone. That things is PIMP...

My buddy Dave and I got some more done on the cage this weekend. I am very happy with how it is turning out. I think it looks a little tall with none of the other bars I have planned in. With the step up in the rear of the tub I wanted to make sure the passengers have ample head room, proper safety, and still look decent. You are looking at roughly 25" to the top of the bar from the top of the tub. Still a bunch to do.

Thank you!

All the fuel lines are made. I hate bending and flaring crap. Big PITA, and the bender I used for the lines sucked. Genright Crawler tank is installed. Entire front is put back to gether. I just have a few things to finish up and this thing should be running.

I had to get creative with the lower radiator hose, and the genright tank has different size inputs for the fuel filler and vent hoses....

Finally getting there. Oh, and my left nut and maybe a kidney are for sale. I need some money for HAD driveline....

This thing actually started on Sunday. Not even a code and check engine light free. Took only 6 or so wires to get this swap to work. I started to weed out most of the harness and have a good amount of cleanup to do. But it runs, and it runs good. Pics to follow.

How are you doing the electrics for the engine?

How are you doing the electrics for the engine?

I basically took the wiring diagrams from MITCHELL and sorted out the basic wires I needed to make the motor run. I then attached these into my CJ8 harness. I also retained the ZJ power distribution box that is under the hood. I have a little more cleanup on the harnes. All in all it only took me a weekend. I see you have a Scram with the exact same setup....

Here are a few more pics.

Staring on the front now. I work so damn slow.... I plan to basically cut the whole front section of fram off and replace with DOM for clearance issues. The rig sits nice an low as you can see from the pics below. This is the planned ride height. 21" belly clearance. Drivetrain has been raised about 6"'s. Setup to clear 42's. Sitting at 113" wheelbase.

Looks sweet Tommy! how much wider is the front end then the rear there?

Thank you. I have never really measured it so I couldnt tell you. I think the pic is a little decieving. I have yet to adjust my arms so the axle is just kind of thrown under there. It is shifted roughly 1.5" to the drivers side right now.

Here is what I came up with in the front. I am not so sure about my upper link mount on the axle side. It is kind of tall. But it is what I had to do to get the separation I wanted and to keep my lower link mount flat with the centerline of the axle. Of course it will need a ton of gussets. Anybody have any thoughts? From all of the damn threads I read on pirate I built my front on a couple take aways I gathered as important. Everything is just tac'd so I can still move things around. My biggest concern is having enough room for my CO on the driverside. Any feedback is appreciated.

As parallel as possible.
As flat to the ground as possible.
8+ inches of vertical separation at the axle. I have 9".
Arms close to the same length.

From what I can tell so far the trackbar has just enough room to fit between my steering ram. The whole front frame section from the lower link mounts forward is going to be cut off and a tub front portion of the chassis will be built to make sure everything has ample clearance.

The Scrambler's looking sweet!

Keeping a steering box?

What's the reasoning behind running the upper on the driver side? It's always seemed easier to make a combined axle-side upper and panhard mount on the passenger side for space reasons to me, but it can be difficult with the passenger drop axle. With the upper centered over the axle, it looks like it would force you to run a shorter panhard. Plus, mounting a CO in there will be difficult. With the upper outside of the frame, you might have to rotate the upper mount back to squeeze the CO in there.

If you're ditching mechanical steering, could you squeeze the upper in inside the frame?

Thanks for the response Indy. Yes sir I am ditching the the mechanical steering and will be running a PSC double ended ram like on my ZJ. The same one to be exact. The trackbar looks like it will fit just behind the ram. With how low the 8 sits I am finding it difficult to package everything. If I was to place the arm on the passenger side it gets in the way of my drive shaft. if I try and fit it on the inside of the frame on the driver side it will get in the way of exhaust and such. Where it sits right now is the best place I could find. I will be cutting the front frame section off I will probably make some room in that design to allow room for the upper to shift towards the passenger side a couple inches. This should give me enough room to just barely squeeze the CO in there. Fingers crossed. The low cog thing I am going for may be a bigger pita then it is worth. I guess I will see.

I hear you on the packaging thing. If I ever link the front of my YJ I'll probably be in the same boat and rebuilding the front of the frame again.

Pushing the upper to the passenger side as far as you reasonably can, even if it's just a couple inches, should help a lot. You might end up having to lay the upper axle mount back a little to clear the CO at full articulation. You could also gain some room by lowering the lower mounts about two inches and taking the same amount out of the upper mount - with them so close to the Cs you wouldn't lose much "real" ground clearance. Of course, that'd alter your geometry. Stupid compromises.

For sure. It is all about compromise. I am going to stick with what I have for now and see where things fit. I really appreciate your comments and ideas.

I got the front torn down this weekend. I need to weld some supports in to keep the frame halfway straight as I cut the entire front section behind the existing motor mounts off.

More incredibly slow progress.

I started the highline fenders and was able to get both sides of the hood cut. Everything fits real nice. I also started getting the steering kind of in its place.
