This is the first part of the snorkel system I’m putting together for my POS. Pretty basic CAI. It took me a while to find an air filter that would meet my dimensional requirements while supporting the V8 air flow. If I were to use a smaller filter it would be very easy. This could be done but at the cost of restricting intake airflow. The filter I selected is a straight filter (cylinder shape) with additional filtering element material at the top. This is going to work great with the snorkel system I’m throwing together. The huge rubber coupler that attaches the filter to the tube that attaches to the intake hat, is a 3" to 6" adapter. Another one of these adapters will go on the other side of the filter with a section of 6" PVC connecting the two adapters. This will make up the sealed canister portion of the snorkel system.

In this pic you can see where I have moved the washer fluid reservoir back a few inches. I also modified the emissions junk holding bracket and moved it forward an inch or so. This gives me the space Ill need to cut through the fender and shoot out with 3".

Ill get some more pics of the CAI portion of this system up tomorrow along with a parts listing. I’m freezing my ass of at the moment. Just got back from the test drive and the CAI sounds nice, no huge performance gain, but I’m sure its worth a few pony’s on the top end.

Ill start another thread for the snorkel portion that attaches to this CAI once I get a few more pieces glassed up.

I used the same fittings on my 02, but oriented towards the grile, after realising "cold air" wasn't as important to me as water protection, I teisted it around a bit to give me more of a mini snorkel effect, with a few more fittings.. The whole thing was sold as Burnasi's Ram It on JU a long time ago..
Most people said nice Home Depot crap, but in reallity it is a good idea, and decent materials, and it is only available at Lowes around here..

I assume you are using the large plastic coupler with a single 3"ish intlet/outlet. I have the same thing on the 5.2 in the WJ right now, aimed at the grille, since I never got around to welding up the snorkel, I have some nice bends and good tubing ready to go..just not into water any more, but being in FL we have a lot of it so it is still a thought for wet season..
Tomorrow is ditching the A/C compressor and a few new parts, so maybe I'll use your work as an inspiration..

What kind of filter is that.

Ill get the filter pn# up tomorrow. It was a bastard to find one that would do the trick in a canister. The 3" PVC that mates to the 22 degree 3" hose from the intake, and the 3" id filter, is 3" x 3" schedule 30. On both ends of the PVC I had to work in 1.5" sections of 3" exhaust tube. The exhaust tube ends are thin enough to mate up with the filter and the intake hose, and the center PVC section is perfect for mating up to the 3" to 6" adapter.
I had to mail order the big adapters. I looked everywhere locally and couldn’t get them. Most places only go up to a 6" to 4" adapter. The shortest piece of 6" PVC (canister) I could get was a 10' length.
As far as the snorkel portion goes, I could have modified a 4.0 Safari Snorkel, but I would still need a filter relocation solution, and for nearly $500 I want something that is going to work right out of the box. My system is 3" all the way, so NO bottlenecks like you would get with the Safari Snorkel designed around a 4.0.
I have the ram scoop just about ready. It’s a fiberglass piece I made up and I think it looks killer. The mold for my fender air passage is ready to go, I just have to glass it up. I’m still on the fence about how I want to shoot up the window to the scoop. I started glassing up a mold I made but I’m rethinking it now and I may just bend up some 3" exhaust. This way the mounting tabs on the up tube will be welded to the tube in a very ridged configuration.

So I didn’t get too much done today, it was a hang out with wife kind of day.

Here is the CAI portion disassembled, the filter is a K&N pn# RX-2820:

This is the coupler; the marks are for locating the fitting that will connect to the CVR tube.

Getting the coupler set up take a 3/8NPT barbed fitting. I tapped a nut to 3/8NPT, for securing the fitting to the coupler. Everything is getting sealed up with JB weld.

This is what the canister portion of the snorkel is going to look like. The center coupling section is 6"x6" PVC.

A quick shot of the snorkel scoop I’m making.

I thought you where going a little different way.. I used this set up on my WJ for a week or two before it got wet down here, then I turned it around and plumbed it way out of reach..Also ditched the K&N in favor of a shorther and better layed out tube... But the reason I like it is packaging, it is super tight and completely sealed, with minimal junctions. Also the side outlet makes for an easier run to the fender..With the hose coming out the bottom I couldn't find room.. I did use agro fittings from it to a rubber and wire lined heavy duty hose, and then wrapped all connections in 2" rescue tape, no chance of water intrusion.. This time outside was going to be a nice SS tube up to the roof and a Caterpiler vortex dust and sediment seperator, but I honestly I am tired as hell of the water, and not sure about the fundtion over desire of it.. Water sucks..

Shot down the canister. About 9/16" clearance between the id of the canister and the filter.

The new PCV routing.

Canister pointing to the location it is going to shoot out the fender.

Finished for now.

I just have to finish up the external snorkel portion now. I can also get started on the dual battery now that the OE air box is out of the way.

Its been on mt mind for a while now but has taken a back seat to axle swaps and long arms. I just picked up a nice TIG welder so when I get around to it this spring I think its going to turn out very nice, I have some ideas.
