View Full Version : Polyurethane Motor Mounts for ZJ/WJ....?

I'd like to introduce a new product into the GC world. I'm wondering if people would be interested in polyurethane motor mounts for the 5.2L/5.9L ZJ and also maybe some for the 4.7L WJ? I know I personally hate replacing the motor mounts on any vehicle, and since they are offered in a polyurethane for every other Jeep besides the ZJ/WJ, I want to get some feedback from you guys. ZJ's are becoming more and more popular to build up as the prices on them go down and they become older, so the market for GC's is growing.

I can't really say an exact price right now, but I wouldn't do it if it wasn't worth it for both my customers and CR. I figure new OEM mounts go for ~$50 each, so I would only go into this if I could offer them at ~$65 each....and offer a lifetime warranty on them as well.

I just want to see how much interest there would be in them before I go through all the work of getting them designed and priced out. If everyone thinks OEM mounts are good enough, then it wouldn't be worth it for either side.

Thanks,

Tyler

Totally ignore the 4.0. Those lousy bastards are probably too broke to afford poly anyway.

I tried to make my own using poly inserts and 6061 sleeves with the steel surrounds from some stock 5.2 and 4.0 mounts and it didn't work out so well. So I would be interested if you would consider expanding the product line to us I-6 bottom dwellers.

$65 each and a lifetime warranty? You want me to PM you my CC#??? LOL

CrawlerReady

Haha well it probably won't be until summer that I have them in stock.

As far as the 4.0L goes, if I look into doing this further, I will make sure I offer them for the 4.0L ZJ as well. There would be more of a demand for those then the WJ I would think since the WJ is newer...

We got some for Pam's ZJ last year sometime around May from NAPA. They're already shot. I've got Mopar OEM mounts that I put on maybe 3-4 years ago and they're "okay" at this point, and the slight increase in vibrations wouldn't bother me in the least. We drove my ZJ to dinner last night and I commented on how quiet and smooth the engine was compared to my truck, lol.

CrawlerReady

Yeah that's the one issue is the increase in vibrations. I'm going to do the same durometer that Daystar uses on theirs, which should keep it pretty close to stock vibes.

I currently have some bad ass ones on my 4.6 stroker. I got them from autofab who was the only one who made them before for the ZJ (that I could find) they are awesome and I have had them for almost 4 years now and they are great.

Thought I had some good pix in my build thread of them being installed after poweder coating, but I guess not.

You can see them here when we did the stroker install though:

Yeah those are some beefy looking mounts for the 4.0L...wouldn't it be nice to offer those for the 5.2L? :D

I wouldn't bother unless you offer all mounts (transmission and any others) also in poly. Differential in materials begins to crack things.

Understandable, and eventually I plan to do so.

Explain the second part to me though, as I run poly motor mounts on our YJ, TJ and XJ and haven't had any issues. What exactly will crack if running poly motor mounts and stock rubber trans mounts?

I hate poly. Harder durometer rubber, sure, but not poly.

Is it because of elasticity differences, heat resistance, or something else?

I hate poly. Harder durometer rubber, sure, but not poly.

Any specific reason for this? A softer durometer Poly will last MUCH longer than a harder durometer rubber and they can both can isolate the same amount of vibration.

I would take some. My factory ones are cracked and/or worn out

Many different reasons. I'm the one who voted No. Increased noise and vibration, not resistant to heat and cold flow are my main issues with poly. You don't have those issues with rubber - and I've always had good luck with it - but then again, I'm not talking brick hard rubber either. Hell, the majority of the bushings on my 5.9 were still in serviceable condition and they had 150k miles on them. I've yet to have anything poly last anywhere near that long.

I had a poly motor mount on my Fireturd melt when I had shorty headers on it. Had me scratching my head when I opened the hood and the engine was leaning a bit. I've stated in the past that I'm not a fan - especially where the application has more than one axis of movement (such as control arm bushings). With poly, as the harness goes down, cold flow increases, and I've had issues with that as well.

The only positive thing I can say about poly is that it's cheap and it's much easier to mold than rubber and can be machined too.

A old trick with motor mounts is to fill the voids with cold-set butyl to increase overall durometer and make them last longer. I've done it a couple of times, but it didn't seem to make much difference.

Both of my motor mounts and the trans mount are trash. I need to replace them all, and I would love to go to poly in all 3. 4.slow.

I can't take anyone's money just yet as I haven't looked into pricing or anything. I just needed to make sure I wasn't going to be waisting time and money pursuing this. It wouldn't be until closer to summer that these would even be available.

It seems like there would be enough interest to look into it though and get the ball rolling. I'll keep you guys updated with the progress of this.

Define "cold flow"

Define "cold flow"
Definition: The distortion, deformation, or dimensional change which takes place in materials under continuous load at temperatures within the working range (cold flow is not due to heat softening). See also CREEP and COMPRESSION SET.

Hook me up on some poly mounts for the 5.9 asap. I know you said they won't be ready til the summer but don't you have some prototypes or something that you need tested? I'm doing my swap in the next few weeks hopefully and don't wanna mess w/ it 2x.

Well I for sure won't have any real prototypes until at least the beginning of March. Right now I've just been busy checking into all the costs involved and supply. I'll definitely let you know when I do get something for the 5.9L to test out. :smt023

Cleaned the thread up a little bit, pimping a competitor's product in a Vendor's thread is not allowed.

First off, SEE DAVE'S POST ABOVE YOURS.

Second off, if Crawler Ready made them with the metal components as well, I'd MUCH rather run those. Many of us have ripped the metal of the stock mounts in half. Why would I put poly in it to add even more stress to the stock junk?

Deleted yet ANOTHER post pimping a competitor's product. Any more posts like that will result in a vacation from here for whoever posts it.

Alright just to update everyone.

I expect to have the new polyurethane HD motor mounts available for sale to the public around mid-April. I'll take some pictures of the ones I'm getting in the next couple weeks. Not only will these be made out of polyurethane, but the housings are a heavier gauge metal and much stronger than OE. They will also have a lifetime warranty (non-transferrable). Cost-wise they'll go for ~$145 a pair, but like always I'll do some discounts for you guys.

These will be produced and I'll keep everyone updated for those that would want a set ;).

edit: Forgot to mention, right now these will only be available for the 5.2L. I will see how sales go and eventually (by the end of the year) offer them for the 4.0L and 5.9L. Then WJ's if there is enough interest down the road.

With the way the economy slowed things down and the issue with not offering trans mounts yet, I've still got some 5.2 mounts to move before I start into other mounts. It's still on the list for the future, but funds are tied up right now.
