Previous owner replaced the temp guage with an autometer which does not report to the ECU. My engine has been running REALLY rich. I suspect I am stuck in bypass mode or something and the engine thinks it is at 180* constanly

how can I trick the ECU back into reading 205*?

It probably has more to do with the temp sensor and the wiring that was cut when the after market gauge was installed. But to trick the ECU you would need to find out what resistance the OEM sensor has when it is at 205*. Then you can build a module to that resistance or even an adjustable module to trick the ECU to think the engine is at that temp. But if this doesn't coincide with other engine readings it can cause the CEL to come on, or can cause the engine to run lean when it needs to run a little richer to warm up.

fawk, looks like I will be replacing with an oem temp gauge
I dont think my 92' 4.0 has an additional temp gauge in the block like the older ones
